00:00:00:00 - 00:00:20:07

Unknown

A big news conference this past week from the nuggets saying they're going to make some big changes or not. The Avs meanwhile, while they're fighting, you can see that they're having trouble with each other. D-Von tapes firing pucks at Nathan MacKinnon, which reminds me of how I felt this morning filling up and setting a new personal record. 66 bucks at the pump.

00:00:20:13 - 00:00:40:23

Unknown

Finally, you're late to the party.

00:00:40:26 - 00:01:03:13

Unknown

Welcome to After the Horn, Apollo, Tom green, Woody Page. Now that we've all bitched about the gas prices, we can go on. You're just a piker with that number. Not even in the fall. Pride. He. He comes to the party so late? Late? Well, I just, you know, I usually I have my driver fill up for me, but I, I had to do it myself this time.

00:01:03:14 - 00:01:31:04

Unknown

So here we go. Avalanche! After taking one in the teeth in game three, bounce right back with game four. Put in a very impressive performance. And I thought the most notable thing was the build up to the change in goaltending. Mackenzie Blackwood gets the start, and in the 12 hours between when it becomes clear that Blackwood will start and when the game actually happens, most of the the reaction to it was criticism for Jared Bednar, because clearly he doesn't know what he's doing.

00:01:31:04 - 00:01:53:10

Unknown

He doesn't know his team. And then Blackwood went out and threw an ace. It was a great great game for Blackwood in the abs. Yeah the abs are just better. Yeah. He works with both of them all year long. He there's nobody in this town or in the National Hockey League that knows them better. And how they work together during the course of the year with the injury.

00:01:53:11 - 00:02:17:23

Unknown

And you know, I thought, gee, maybe I'll get a shot. You know, I'm the only wood that hasn't been in goal. But he's I think we talked before the playoffs of whether or not he used both of them. Right. I think this is effective. I remember the wild when they beat the avalanche back when the wild was an early expansion team.

00:02:17:24 - 00:02:40:21

Unknown

And they used a they used to goalies against the avalanche then. And I kind of like this. You keep you're keeping them fresh if one's not going. Well we saw that in game four. I'll tell you what I like. They got the lead 2 to 1. Minnesota comes right back. Yeah. Ties the game that crowds going berserk. And all the momentum is with Minnesota.

00:02:40:22 - 00:03:02:10

Unknown

And it wasn't MacKinnon. It wasn't MacArthur. It was Parker Kelly that scored the eventual game winner. And it just said to me, the Avs are just so deep and so talented. They don't need their best guys all going to win. They really don't. But don't you like Josh coming back? Well, I was interested. Almost had a short stint.

00:03:02:11 - 00:03:27:16

Unknown

I was going to say I was interested in the first period interview with the guy. Karen. Yes. Who took the butt end in the face. They took the butt in right in the face. Dirty player. Always has been, always will be. I said, okay, you got it out there. Someone was asking me and you guys, that's one of the advantages we have this show is we've been around so long that before the show, what you miss is we spend about 30 minutes talking about anything.

00:03:27:17 - 00:03:55:13

Unknown

When we had colonoscopy. Yes, 30 years ago. You may want to. Who was the guy that was a native Canadian, Native American, Canadian? He was a Native American. I'll answer that. Was there tough guy the first couple of years? Well, I'll go back. I'll go back before that. The first Native American tough guy the old Colorado Rockies had was the chief Ron Delorme.

00:03:55:20 - 00:04:13:23

Unknown

Yes. Yeah, but but when he would score, he would pull a bow and arrow out on an imaginary arrow out and he would shoot the goaltender. I loved it, but Chris was the guy that Chris Simon, he would he he'd get kicked out in the first two minutes. Well, sadly, he is one of those boys hockey. We'll talk about CTE.

00:04:13:24 - 00:04:36:15

Unknown

We're not we won't do that today. But claiming the fight. I have no thing about Chris Simon two Chris Simon was a tough guy, but he could play. Yeah, I mean, he had good hands. He could score. Yes, he was a great Junge player for the avalanche. It wasn't a great player. Went on to be a coach, assistant coach all around the league, San Jose and stuff like that.

00:04:36:16 - 00:04:58:06

Unknown

He was from Canada and when they won the Stanley Cup, each player gets it for a day. He took it back to his hometown and went out to canoe and fished with just him in the Stanley Cup, and I thought that was one of the me and standard. Going there on a crash course with the Carolina hurricane. Looks like it mean.

00:04:58:09 - 00:05:20:07

Unknown

Together they have a combined one loss in the playoffs, so it looks very much like those two teams. And now in hockey anything can happen. We know that. Well I want to ask you guys a pundit question, since you guys have been two of the most opinionated voices in Colorado for the better part of 45, 50 years since Frank airway.

00:05:20:08 - 00:05:39:10

Unknown

I know, because yesterday I thought I was taken aback by everyone's doubting questioning in those hours about going to Blackwood. And it was just a lot of chat. And I'm just wondering about what? About the coach who had the best record and who's seven and one in the playoffs. Maybe knowing his team better. He knows you just said it.

00:05:39:11 - 00:05:58:08

Unknown

He knows his team better than we do, better than fans do. I have confidence in him. He's earned it. In him, in bed, in him. Yeah. Yes. So he doesn't get you know one thing I like about him he doesn't get flustered. I watch the games. But did you see anybody complaining to the wild coach for bringing back the first game?

00:05:58:09 - 00:06:17:22

Unknown

There was turbulence about that. Whenever you got a Stanley Cup title, the wild coach does. So. So where do they go now for game five back here. Which you know you think okay here we go. The series is almost over. Game five is going to be a pretty good fight. Sure and could change the series if the Avs don't bring it.

00:06:17:23 - 00:06:38:26

Unknown

Who's in net? Whoever Jared Bednar wants. That's right I think he's going to pull his wedge out. Oh you think he's going to go to the wedge. He's going to go to a wood fairway wood wedge or a wood. The I, I think it's over. I mean really I think it's over. I don't think do you think about what you've seen.

00:06:38:27 - 00:07:04:00

Unknown

Can you concoct either one of you a scenario where Minnesota beats the avalanche three consecutive times? The the avalanche and you said a brushed by it, but the avalanche are going to play the Carolina Hurricanes. And I told somebody two natural disasters. Avalanche of course. But I said the hurricanes are by far the best in the Eastern Conference.

00:07:04:00 - 00:07:36:07

Unknown

And the and this is maybe we can have this discussion. This may be the best avalanche team of all time. Have you been hearing that at all, or people wondering about that team that had Claudio Mu, right, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg? I would push back. I would push back on that a little. And and but the depth. Look, I agree that they had but I think the 96 team and the 2001 team, the 96 team, especially because people weren't aware of it as was happening.

00:07:36:12 - 00:08:03:28

Unknown

You got some Hall of Famers sprinkled up and down your lineup. And so you talk about depth. I could see what you're getting at, but you also had the goalie in you had a team. Yeah. And these guys are playing great, but they are not at the resume. Anything like Patrick. Why very few do. But let me go to point B, Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg against the big two of the current avalanche.

00:08:04:05 - 00:08:25:26

Unknown

The jury I think is still out. We got we got two guys that are going, two more guys that are going to the Hall of Fame. Right. And you got one that might be the best defensive player in the history of the game Bobby War. But I'm Bobby Orr since Bobby Orr okay. But but you had you had Bourque and Blake and foot I mean your blue line was ridiculous back then too.

00:08:25:28 - 00:08:44:26

Unknown

So. So you think I don't want to? You don't even want to give them you. You're not important. See what the conversation. Let's see how the next few weeks ago. Yeah, they are very good. And they very they will certainly be able to have that discussion. Well, since you're for Bobby Orr, number number four, what do you think I'm some sort of idiot?

00:08:44:27 - 00:09:07:13

Unknown

I mean, I had a call, but it wasn't on my brain that to me. Bring it up. This best sports bar. Yeah. What what did the force. What was the. What do you have yesterday? They stuck a needle in some orifice. Well, we can get graphic. Are we going to stick with them? Did you have anything else on or other than I think?

00:09:07:14 - 00:09:31:09

Unknown

I think number four is the sports bar in Boston. I think that's the best sports bar because of the way the people in the bar. Yes, the fans in the bar is great. About Bobby Orr. That picture when he scored in 69 against the Blues. That might be one of the five most iconic sports photograph, something we all do.

00:09:31:09 - 00:09:49:29

Unknown

You guys know I like photography. The story of that picture is incredible. The guy who got to shoot through that little hole, that little hole. He was there because another guy had gone to get something to eat as they went to overtime, so he jumped in and took that picture. That picture. I've got that picture of my office at home.

00:09:50:03 - 00:10:16:29

Unknown

I just love that picture. What is Joe Sakic, number 19? What is Peter for? Berg 21, 2021. What is MacKinnon's number? 2929. What's McCarthy's number? Eight eight. Oh, see, you guys are keeping up with that. This is what we do, I bet. I bet people watching this didn't couldn't name those four and Bobby Orr being number four. So I want to get to Victor Wembanyama.

00:10:16:29 - 00:10:38:22

Unknown

But in route. Let's touch on Josh Manson and his butt ending last night of McCarron. It is what it is, isn't it? I mean, let's take our avalanche. How many times you don't see, I don't think that penalty gets called anymore. And when it does, it's usually you're gone for the night. What did he say afterward? That was kind of interesting twist on what happened.

00:10:38:24 - 00:10:56:12

Unknown

And I wanted to punch him. If I could have hit him in the head, I would have hit him in the head. That's going to carry over, I think, a little bit in a series and they're going to keep a watch on him because of that. But I thought it was. That's what I like. One of the aspects I like about hockey players, I'd say exactly what they mean.

00:10:56:13 - 00:11:15:08

Unknown

They don't want anything. Yeah, well it'll be an interesting game. Game five, I think it'll be a hockey game. I don't think it's going to be any. No. And then we'll crazy. Both teams need to play a really good hockey game on Wednesday and that's what that'll be. Wembley on the other hand will be playing but some people think he shouldn't.

00:11:15:09 - 00:11:38:23

Unknown

After he elbowed read in the head and neck your thoughts, I thought it was. I think if you're officiating the game and if you're the league, you do take the sum of what happened on the way up there, the amount of of abuse he takes throughout a game and understand to some extent. But I think missing 5/8 of a game is pretty good punishment.

00:11:38:24 - 00:12:00:02

Unknown

I know Nikola Jokic takes a lot of abuse and he gets feisty, but he doesn't. He gets it. I've never seen him throw an elbow like that to somebody head where you could literally do some severe damage, but he literally missed most of a playoff game. He's going to play because and this has been true about the NBA forever.

00:12:00:03 - 00:12:32:11

Unknown

He's the face of the league. And there is a different form of justice. Like just like there is in our society. Sure, there is a different form of justice for him than there is for other people. Had Na's Reed elbowed Wembanyama like that, he probably wouldn't play again in the series. Getting some time off. Yeah. So when Bynum was a star and there was no surprise, but I did, I was a little surprised that, okay, you don't want to suspend him.

00:12:32:12 - 00:12:57:25

Unknown

How about finding him? You mean like $50,000? No, not. You know, whatever the CBA says is the most you can fly with. It might be 50 with the Joker. Might be. How could it be more than 50,000? But I mean, are we going to compare what what Jokic did with what when Binyamin did. There's no comparison. No no that was a vicious elbow.

00:12:57:28 - 00:13:22:25

Unknown

But I had two thoughts. He doesn't want to get that characterization about him over a period of time. Because we're looking at a guy that Jokic has had a great career. We'll have great career. Move over Joker. Yeah because he's the first. He's the first to say that he's he's going to be the women's. Going to be the most valuable player for the next ten eight years.

00:13:22:26 - 00:13:42:17

Unknown

So when he does play they need to get on top of that series again. So what do you do if you're Minnesota tonight and when Bynum is out there and he really hasn't paid a price? And what do you do if you're Minnesota and what does the NBA allow the Minnesota Timberwolves to do tonight I know what I would do.

00:13:42:18 - 00:14:11:05

Unknown

Well please. Okay. There's two schools of thought. You can wait until next year to dispense justice, which a lot of teams would do. What I would do if I was Chris Finch, I would say if Wembanyama wants to stay out there at the three point line and jack up threes, let him do it. But tonight, if he goes anywhere near the basket, I want to I want his ass wrestled to the floor and force them to make calls on us.

00:14:11:12 - 00:14:30:21

Unknown

That's what I would do. Is it too late in the season to get that kid that's with Portland? I think that seven, eight, seven, eight. Yeah. And bring him in and say I just one guy that. But are you are you just punishing him or are you baiting him also into him. Yeah. Listen, he he started it. He threw down the gantlet this.

00:14:30:23 - 00:14:52:21

Unknown

And again for people that didn't see the game, there are many times in NBA games because we've all covered a million NBA games where a guy gets a rebound, he comes down and he inadvertently it does happen. He swings, he clears and he hits somebody that's inadvertent. This was not that. This was away from the basket. Jaden McDaniels was tying him up.

00:14:52:21 - 00:15:19:02

Unknown

He got frustrated and he loaded up and threw a vicious elbow. So I if I'm the NBA I'm going to give Minnesota a little leeway tonight. Wait wait wait. Let me bring that up. Because you mentioned a name there McDaniels that we saw in previous series. He likes that. Did you. Would you have wanted somebody on the nuggets to take him out of.

00:15:19:06 - 00:15:44:12

Unknown

Yes. We talked about this. Well then why are you so hard about wimpy and what he did. Because when he's kind of what what I'll give you the difference Jaden McDaniels talked. He said these guys don't play any defense. He named names. He didn't go out on the floor and say, I'm going to take a cheap shot at Jokic and I'm going to knock his head off.

00:15:44:12 - 00:16:07:09

Unknown

That's what Wembanyama did. There's a difference between talking and saying these guys are soft. They don't play defense and taking an elbow. And you could break a guy's jaw or worse with the severity of that elbow. What's your forecast? He had 39 in the game before that. He was unbelievable in game three. I mean not just the 39.

00:16:07:10 - 00:16:32:00

Unknown

The shots that he altered, which he does every night, which he does every single. He'll play great tonight. He'll play great San Antonio and San Antonio is going to win the series for for a couple of reasons. One, they're better than Minnesota, but two, the NBA wants wembanyama against OKC. That is the best that yes, in these entire playoffs.

00:16:32:00 - 00:17:04:11

Unknown

I'm going to feed into the conspiracy theory that I hate. As a matter of fact, did you see Tim Donaghy refereeing tonight. He's he's he's going to they're going to win the series okay. Do you think as an aside, Lew Alcindor Kareem Abdul-Jabbar changed the game of basketball. They threw away the dog. Is there a possibility that because of wimpy there's a rule change about blocked shots because you've we've already heard the Timberwolves talked about he didn't have 1210 foul.

00:17:04:12 - 00:17:28:17

Unknown

And well I think I think what the Wolves are doing which is the right thing to do is to put the thought into the officials, especially the officials in games going forward. Well, hey, watch it because he doesn't block every shot legally. Yeah. You you brought up a, an official with the intermediate official with the prison, the well known.

00:17:28:18 - 00:17:47:21

Unknown

Let's talk about NBA. Do you think really. And back when I was covering basketball full time, the only friends I had in the league were officials we'd drinking afterward. And we'd talk about the game and stuff like that. Do you think that they stole my history? That they don't give a shit? No, they don't, they don't, they don't.

00:17:47:23 - 00:18:04:21

Unknown

You can. Oh, that they would say to me. Oh, the coach's chewing on my ass tonight. But how many do you know? No no, no. Officials don't they. Officials, especially the good ones. They could care. They could not care less. Who wins every league might, though. Every night. The league in the 70s and 80s, you'd know at least one, if not both the officials.

00:18:04:21 - 00:18:29:13

Unknown

You knew who they were. You knew their style, they had personalities. And now you know who Scott Foster, Tony brothers. Those are the only guys. But none of those guys, even those guys, Scott Foster, Tony Brothers, those guys. You can't compare those guys to Earl Strom, Jake O'Donnell, Jack Madden, Darryl Garretson, they were all on their worst days, better officials than the guys.

00:18:29:13 - 00:18:49:11

Unknown

And guess what? In the case of most of those guys, they'd still be better officials today. You could dig Earl up from the grave and he'd be better. Well, I'd be illegal. It would be. Let's let's talk about the nuggets talked about this week. They had their big end of year press conference. So so much so many people are looking forward to what they're going to say.

00:18:49:11 - 00:19:26:22

Unknown

What's Josh cranky Tensor Wallace and what's David Adelman going to say. And then they said nothing. They said nothing and they said nothing. And you could have anticipated that. But it was, I thought, a very disappointing presser. Yeah. That's maintained. You guys know this. I maintain that David Adelman should be an idle man. Meaning without a job. I said to you, you have to remember like midway through the through the season, I said, he needs a guy next to him on the bench that's been an NBA champion, remember?

00:19:26:24 - 00:19:49:22

Unknown

I'm not trying to, but they still don't have that guy. I think it was not only him, but I've said this to you, you're tired of listening to me. That entire coaching staff is awful. That is a shit troupe of people that have never had the experience of being in a championship final. He was not getting any help.

00:19:49:23 - 00:20:13:28

Unknown

Okay? You didn't give me any help. Get him the hell out of there and bring in somebody. And there are people. There's a guy, Billy Donovan, that's sitting out there. That's one Championships in college basketball. He's been in the playoffs many times. If you're not going to fire him. And just talking made that point, oh we're going to bring him back as if he.

00:20:14:00 - 00:20:37:07

Unknown

Oh I'll defend the assistant coaches this way because there are only I'll say this not only 12 of them. So how much help could you possibly get from only a what happened to the days when you had one guy and one trainer? And that was about half a guy too many. And we should mention that one of those guys, the only one that that Doug Moe had one year, is having a life of celebration.

00:20:37:08 - 00:20:55:15

Unknown

Celebration of Bill 50. We should give him a big bill is at his pizza place in June 20th. I don't think he wants to open it to the public. So yes, it's going to be. I don't care. I'm going to open it to the public. I'll stand out in the parking lot with the public. Did you learn anything?

00:20:55:16 - 00:21:18:00

Unknown

I'll buy you pizza. They had to say, come out there. I'll buy you people. I just find it interesting that two of the best performances, regular season performances this year, I thought, were turned in by the Denver Nuggets and the Boston Celtics. And now, because of one series. And I'm not saying that people are wrong. Both fan bases want to get rid of the coach.

00:21:18:04 - 00:21:38:23

Unknown

So so you are not in favor of getting. No, I am in favor. I think when you I don't care about the regular season. The regular I said this last week on the show if I was a GM and let's say I was a GM of the nuggets. All right. I don't care how many games Aaron Gordon plays in the regular season, I just want him to be ready in the playoffs.

00:21:38:23 - 00:22:00:09

Unknown

I don't think the league does any more. I don't think they care. So I mean, I think the whole regular season now should just be like a preseason about making sure your best players are healthy. Go beyond that. Joke is hurt. Seriously, for the first time in his career and it's not a career ending. Why do you bring him back?

00:22:00:09 - 00:22:27:15

Unknown

What is the hurry to bring him back to be eligible for MVP or whatever? Why are you bringing Aaron Gordon back toward the end of the year? Why are you playing him in a first playoff game? And why are you bringing back these guys over and over again? Even Christian Brown apparently Payton Watson while guys got re-injured. Those games mean nothing.

00:22:27:17 - 00:22:49:16

Unknown

And they were doing it. Everybody here was moaning and crying and everything. Well, that's what you got as a result of bringing them all back. And they still were nothing about that news conference to your answer. You surprised me. So what if they add two more assistant coaches and two more trainers? Would that help keep. Well, maybe a trainer that comes from goes that works with soft tissue.

00:22:49:17 - 00:23:09:14

Unknown

So I did you do you remember when you got into this game. Did you ever hear the expressions of tissue soft tissue. That's that's a relatively soft tissue. Was me after a long night drinking, trying to finish the tissue, I want to I want to save plenty of time today to talk about Craig Morton. But, Woody, tell us about Redbird Farms real quick.

00:23:09:15 - 00:23:28:12

Unknown

Then we're going to we're going to talk a little baseball. And we're also going to be talking about Craig Morton, who we all knew who passed away this weekend at 83 years old, and certainly some fond remembrances for sports fans here in Colorado and for us personally. But would you tell us about our friends at Redbird Farms? I want to make two points.

00:23:28:17 - 00:23:54:13

Unknown

The last time I did this, I didn't have my reader glasses, so I made up, by the way, they looked like you. And the last time that we did this last week, you did a great job. So I've got a lot of good luck that I have been. And he kind of mentioned this. I've been to places like Ocean Prime, Shanahan's, where I'm stunned that on the menu you'll see filets.

00:23:54:15 - 00:23:58:09

Unknown

You'll say.

00:23:58:12 - 00:24:25:00

Unknown

The greatest stakes in the world. It'll say lamb, seafood will say chicken. But how many of these steak houses that we have respect for, that we go to are now promoting Redbird chicken because they must have decided, you know, we're talking about steaks that are now coming from Japan and costing $150, but they have great respect for Redbird chicken.

00:24:25:00 - 00:24:50:04

Unknown

And it's taken. It's not brand new, but it's taken this town and I'm sure other places throughout the country by storm. Because how many times in your life. Do you ever say, give me the Tommy Jackson chicken? No, you just say, I'll have the chicken. Chicken? Now you go in there and you go, I want the Redbird chicken.

00:24:50:04 - 00:25:14:09

Unknown

There's a reason why you do that. Because this is great chicken. You're right. And if you haven't tried it, you're doing a good. You got two chances. You can go to a place and say, let me try the Redbird chicken. Or you can go to the grocery store. I'm sorry, grocery like Tom does and insist. And you get Redbird chicken and you and you, like actually make a scene and insist.

00:25:14:10 - 00:25:33:16

Unknown

And it's right. It's not like I need any help. I could just grab it. But I do like the show of insisting I want to speak to your manager. I like that too. When you go to the butcher part of the grocery, do they say, oh, I remember you from TV? Oh no. They go, it's that guy who insists on Redbird guy, that damn guy insisting on Redbird.

00:25:33:17 - 00:25:51:14

Unknown

My God. And I'm. I've got this to read, but I'm going to just read this one line. We're hearing a lot. This is what I'm saying. We're hearing a lot about better chicken lately. And that's true. What does that actually mean when you're talking about Red bird farms? For someone standing at the grocery store like Tom green? Yes, sir.

00:25:51:15 - 00:26:14:19

Unknown

Trying to decide which chicken to buy, there's an answer. Get the best Redbird chicken. That's why we have a relationship with a well, not a personal one, I guess, but I'm going to have it on my grill this week. Because you know what's better than good, Barbara? You guys make it sound like you never go to the grocery store, so I'll get some for you.

00:26:14:25 - 00:26:39:13

Unknown

Get something. Give it to you guys. Don't know where the poultry section is? Oh, I go to the ATM and I occasionally when, when, when the lottery is up to 500 million or something like that. When it's worth it. Then you go and. Yeah. So speaking of getting recognized, I got a colonoscopy yesterday. Oh, man. So I'm on the on the table yet I'm still in the, you know, the room they put you in where you put on the stupid gown.

00:26:39:13 - 00:26:57:01

Unknown

And so this young woman, Chloe. Incredibly nice. Well, what do you want for people who have never had a cold for you? Go in a part of your body that's in the back part of your body you want to put on, like a full outfit or something. I should go, like my wife was telling me. What the. What?

00:26:57:03 - 00:27:20:05

Unknown

You want me to wear a suit? So. Yeah, but I get in there. But you're you're complaining. Listen to this. She's asking me questions about when did you last eat up? 18 different questions. And I don't know why she asks me, but do you work? I go, no, I'm retired. Well, what was your occupation? And I go, you know, I'm half out of it.

00:27:20:05 - 00:27:43:02

Unknown

I go, television news broadcaster. And she goes, no. And I go, yeah. And she goes, no. And I go, yeah. And she's got her phone, she's got her phone. And she goes, well, I'm going to see if you're telling me the truth. That feels like a backwards hip of. And she goes, oh my God, you're telling me the truth.

00:27:43:04 - 00:28:01:11

Unknown

You're the first one ever. Listen, I'm lying here about to get this invasive. Why would I lie to you about this? I'm not saying I was any. I'm not saying I was any good. I'm just saying I was a television news broadcaster. And as soon as she recognized that, she asked you to autograph her propofol. Well, why? Why don't you.

00:28:01:11 - 00:28:23:20

Unknown

I'll help you out. I carry around cards, Woodies, drywall service. I probably give given you go. And when I sit down at a bar and a guy goes, what do you do? I go, here, let me. Do you need some drywall? Do you know how many people don't want to talk to you when you. Yeah, sure. All right.

00:28:23:22 - 00:28:47:15

Unknown

Let's put you are going oh I was TV sports. No I wasn't that was. You're about to get your I, I wanted to get this over with as soon as possible. All I'm doing is answering the questions. Google. I'm not lying there in my hospital gown saying, hey, do you recognize me? No, I'm answering her question and she goes, but you don't have to answer your question.

00:28:47:17 - 00:29:04:26

Unknown

What should I have said? I should have said, well, I'm Woody's driver. I'm a two time Olympic Kathleen Champion. I have a friend. I played third base for the Rockies. What, you don't recognize anything? I'm in the seniors division. How many times do all three of us get? Oh, God, I I'll do you. Oh, I'm sitting in my place where I live.

00:29:04:26 - 00:29:27:28

Unknown

And the lady says, I heard somebody. I just googled you. They're right. You're somebody. And I go, thank you. And I get up and walk away. You don't have to do that. You're getting you are getting major surgery. You well, it's actually minor surgery. But however that's minor surgery is when is when it's on someone else. So but you two guys get recognized.

00:29:27:28 - 00:29:43:04

Unknown

It's easy because they know who you are. Me? People have the time. Think I'm Ed Green? No, they know who you are. I got to get younger than us. I got to give. You're still. You're more relevant than us. I was thinking a lot about Craig Morton, so was I. After his news, I thought the news of his passing to mention.

00:29:43:05 - 00:30:09:05

Unknown

Just to get it out of the way. You and Kim doing the 4 to 5:00. That was the maybe the best news show, I think, in the history of Denver. The two of the the way two of the nicest people in Denver and it came through on the air. And that's why it was so good. It's tough for me because now I watch and she's got another guy, and when he turns on, I turn it on another station.

00:30:09:05 - 00:30:33:27

Unknown

But I turn it back when Kim's on because she don't know that guy. But I'm sure he appreciates Phil. Do you know his name? No, I don't, I don't see that's the whole point. Everybody knew Tom green. There's a guy. What is the guys? What is the guy? Phil lip off. But if you guys Philip off. Phil. But if you guys love Kim like I do, you watch the show, you support her.

00:30:34:00 - 00:30:55:23

Unknown

But you know what I tend to. I don't watch much, but I tend to watch the people that I worked with. Kim Jeremy Hubbard. Yeah, people like that, that I. That I have a relationship. Yeah. Your friends. But the ones that I don't know are relatively new and I don't know them. And it's, you know, I just they're not their demographic.

00:30:55:25 - 00:31:11:17

Unknown

Yeah. That's true. That's what's happening. The turnover is we don't know fast. How many of the guys in sports do you know that are on television? I don't know any of them. That one guy goes, yeah, it's a nice day. It's all good. I don't I think if you asked, I know Romi, you know, I've thought about four.

00:31:11:19 - 00:31:32:28

Unknown

It's Romi, Scotty Gaines, Lionel still doing it over on camera, then I. I know who they are. Yeah. And then so. But if you asked me to critique them, I would be a bad one to ask, you know, watch it. Because I don't see enough to say that one's better than the other. I want to give Lionel because I worked with him.

00:31:33:00 - 00:31:58:15

Unknown

You guys knew him. He was amazing to me. He had twin sons that good baseball players, good athletes. He would go home. But he lives in Highland Highlands, Ranch Ridge. He would go home between the 5:00 show and the 10:00 show to have dinner with his family. And I thought, what a class guy that is, I wouldn't go, I never did that.

00:31:58:16 - 00:32:12:26

Unknown

No, Vic Lombardi, another guy always goes, I was going home to have dinner or lunch with his family. But, you know, most of the guys you and I worked with back in the day, if they were going out at night, it was to have a couple of pops between the five and the ten. Exactly. We were in a different era.

00:32:12:28 - 00:32:35:16

Unknown

Yeah. Oh, I liked going Mike Nolan. If he went home, there was nobody there. There was nobody there. No. Mike was. Hey, Ron, how quickly can you get to the mine company? No, I it's all good. Everybody that does it now, no casting, no aspersions on. It's a different world, different time, different pay scale, different everything. No no no no no we're going to Craig.

00:32:35:16 - 00:32:58:06

Unknown

And you just mentioned the mine company, which is another Craig Morton established. That was one of Craig's all time favorite. Here are some things. Just some notes on Craig. I didn't get to know him well. I was covering the team in his last year when he was. The job was slipping away from him, his body was quitting and then two years later when he was the head coach of the gold, which I think he took as a lark, it was fun, it was funny.

00:32:58:06 - 00:33:19:00

Unknown

And I always remember his sense of humor. But in reading more about him, I remember as a Giants fan, him playing for an awful team there before he came here, I surprised to think of these things. He was born in World War two. Yeah, you know, that's a way. You know, Craig's first year in the NFL, 1965. Well, because he was a great passer at Cal he played for Marv Levy.

00:33:19:04 - 00:33:35:06

Unknown

Can I tell you one great story? I mean, I got a million stories about Craig. I did a year of exhibition games with him, but he was a great athlete before he heard his knees. Really great. And I didn't realize this until I spent a lot of time with Craig. And he goes, you know, I played baseball at Cal, and I go, really?

00:33:35:06 - 00:33:56:15

Unknown

He goes, yeah, I was pretty good. I go, well, how good were you? He goes, well, there was a time when I was trying to decide, should I play pro football or should I play Major League baseball? And I said, well, what convinced you? He goes, I'll tell you exactly. My senior year at Cal, we're playing UCLA in the Pac 12 Baseball Championship.

00:33:56:15 - 00:34:17:12

Unknown

I get up in the top of the first, we're down in LA and I just nut one and it's over the left field fence and I'm rounding first base thinking, God, I'm good. And I look up and I see the left fielder reach about three quarters of the way over the fence, catch it, bring it back and start trotting in.

00:34:17:12 - 00:34:38:08

Unknown

And I go, well, what happened? He goes. Before I could get to second base, I decided I was going to play football. That was one of a million Craig Morton stories. He was a great running quarterback. He was kind of forgotten. Well, because you saw him with the Giants and the Bronco hobbling on his knees. Yeah. When you saw him you know John Elway you know, tore up his knee when he was in college.

00:34:38:08 - 00:35:01:20

Unknown

But he Craig Morton tore up both his knees. And everybody nobody ever realized their thought that he was a good running quarterback. And he was finished after the Cowboys let him go because a he had lost the Super Bowl. And B they had a quarterback that they felt like they had won a Super Bowl with Staubach. And then they said, and Craig was the backup.

00:35:01:20 - 00:35:24:14

Unknown

And so he goes to New York and they're just throwing him away. And the Broncos have a guy that I nicknamed Colfax Steve, whatever his name. Ramsey Steve Ramsey Ramsey. He was terrible. He was awful. And so it was a trade made in hell, really, because the Giants didn't want Morton and the Broncos didn't want it. Steve Ramsey.

00:35:24:14 - 00:35:53:24

Unknown

And so they just said, I'll give you our shit for your shit. And that's what everybody kind of thought. And he what people may not remember is he was competing against a guy named Steve Spurrier. Steve Spurrier. Yeah. The four quarterbacks in 77, in training camp were Craig, Steve Spurrier, Norris Weise and Craig Penrose were the four quarterbacks, and Spurrier started a game in Atlanta.

00:35:53:26 - 00:36:14:24

Unknown

He let Craig started the first game 77 and everybody was kind of they won seven. Nothing I think over the Cardinals they first gave of 77 seven. Nothing I may just say. But in the exhibition season, they were going to give each one a chance to see it. And everybody saw Morton and he didn't play very well. And this guy's washed up.

00:36:14:24 - 00:36:33:21

Unknown

He was good with the Cowboys 18 years ago. And in the last exhibition game Steve Spurrier started, who was a friend of mine, and we wrote on the plane coming back together and he said, do you think I got a chance to start? I said, Steve, do you want the truth? And he said, totally. I said, you're not going to make the team.

00:36:33:24 - 00:36:54:12

Unknown

I said, Craig Morton is going to be the starter, and they're going to have those two kid Penny as the third. And Norris is a change up kind of guy. And he said, you're kidding. So he didn't say anything the rest of the flight. Next morning he went in to read Miller. Miller said, he called me a name, said, he told you you're not making the team.

00:36:54:12 - 00:37:25:20

Unknown

He said, he's right. And he said, but you make a good point. And this is why I think that Craig is one of the most important figures in Bronco history. Because before Craig got here, we had a 16 year run of Frank, Charlie Johnson, Steve Tennessee, Steve Ramsey. Craig was the first guy we got that was actually a well-known, successful NFL quarterback, but not expected to succeed, not expected to succeed.

00:37:25:21 - 00:37:51:29

Unknown

Thought he was at the end. He got better. He was the perfect quarterback at the perfect time for this team. He and Red Miller both came in at the same time and it worked. The other thing about Craig that needs to be said, we have all, all of us been fortunate that we have seen in our lives. Tons of tough athletes play games under incredible situations.

00:37:52:00 - 00:38:16:03

Unknown

I will never, ever, ever forget the 77 AFC Championship Game on New Year's Eve when the Broncos beat the Raiders 20 to 17. And this is how pre-historic those times were. Craig spent that week in the hospital with an unbelievably bad hip pointer. None of us knew it. He comes out on Sunday, throws a couple of touchdown passes, wins the game.

00:38:16:03 - 00:38:38:22

Unknown

I will never forget interviewing him live in the Bronco locker room. And I'm going to tell you, Tom, he was black and blue from his chest down to his knees. And I said, how did you do this? And he kind of laughed and he said, I'll tell you, I told my offensive line if you got a hold, hold because one good hit and I will be out of there.

00:38:38:22 - 00:39:03:25

Unknown

And they kept him upright, and it was for me the single most. I shouldn't say this because I've seen a lot of guys play under adverse conditions. It was as good as I've seen of a guy sucking it up, knowing how important the stakes were, and playing the game and winning what was then the most important game in the franchise's history.

00:39:03:25 - 00:39:23:15

Unknown

And when you look back on the history, there have been more important games. There has never been a more emotional, well, the Bronco game than that game. They'd never won a playoff game, never played in a playoff game until that year. The defense was giving up ten points a game. I mean, they were spectacular. His job was different.

00:39:23:15 - 00:39:43:17

Unknown

But on the Willis Reed meter of toughness. He's a ten. He's a ten. The word red Miller had to tie his shoot. Yeah he could. That was the point I was going to make. You hear the word courageous thrown out was correct. That was courageous. That was courageous not involving a war. And you know what was great about him?

00:39:43:19 - 00:40:02:11

Unknown

Kenny Stabler, who I also loved like crazy. I got to know him. He came on my interview show, I loved him. He had the reputation of, hey, I'll read the game plan by the light of the jukebox. Craig had a lot of that. Yeah. I mean, Craig was that Craig didn't come off that way, but that's who he was.

00:40:02:11 - 00:40:25:26

Unknown

Craig loved having a good time, and the only thing I loved about Craig and you'll know this because back in 77 and 78, Craig enjoyed the members of the media, the press. He was not one of those different times. No, he was good. He. Hey, you want to go get a drink? He was. He was good. Like we were playing at a golf tournament in Steamboat Springs.

00:40:25:28 - 00:40:52:28

Unknown

And you you brought up one of you brought up the announcer that Verne Lundquist had put on a golf tournament with. With Doak Walker? Yeah. And so Craig Morton's there, and the young quarterback you were talking about Penrose, Penrose, Penrose, northwest, Penrose were playing. Penrose were playing. They both got drunkard. And you could possibly imagine with a member of the media.

00:40:52:29 - 00:41:26:02

Unknown

Yes. And they both slid down this staircase and both got hurt. And the drunken media guy whose name I mentioned is there watching that. And they're both taken to the hospital with knee problems, that is, that tournaments held right before training camp starts. So they're there and Red Miller has to get up and outs. We've got, you know, some injuries that happened warming up and stuff like that for our two quarterbacks.

00:41:26:02 - 00:41:49:12

Unknown

And they won't play. And the media guy is standing right there knowing that Red Miller is lying like a Turkish rug. Yeah. And I can't write it because I'm part of the story. I can't I cannot write that they I saw them both get hurt, and it was surprising if they both hadn't gotten hurt, I would have gotten hurt because I would have slid down that same banister.

00:41:49:13 - 00:42:11:27

Unknown

And, and and so they were out for a week in a bike up. Well, you know, they were they were playing around right before they had. No. Yes. Craig Morton was one of that group of, of quarterbacks of that period that enjoyed a good time. He did a you know, like I say, I did one year of preseason football with Craig.

00:42:11:28 - 00:42:32:27

Unknown

You had to hang with to survive. Let me just tell you. And the other thing about that, I can't remember where I left my keys today, but I can remember every single player on that 77 team. And I can't remember every player in the 90s. You remember Glen Hyde. Not only do I remember Glen Hyde, I still see Glen Hyde.

00:42:33:03 - 00:43:05:00

Unknown

I saw him on the golf Riverdale Dunes. He's still working at the airport. Not anymore. Glen's had some tough road to hope, but I can tell you, everybody on that team, all three of us have Craig Morton stories. He was a good guy who had full bows like we all have. Yeah, I wrote once. He spent a whole year finding God, and I wrote that in a playoff game that Craig Morton found the Lord this year, but he couldn't find Moses Sunday.

00:43:05:02 - 00:43:25:26

Unknown

And that became kind of a sports. And my fun fact the impact. Do you remember all the players? My dad remembered that lead. He brought it up yesterday. Way to go to the news. Yeah. So and I he's the only guy that I can possibly remember when they went to the Super Bowl. And I said, I want to give you a tape recorder.

00:43:25:27 - 00:43:50:05

Unknown

Would you just tape at night? I'm writing a book about the Broncos. Would you just talk into it for 15 minutes? And when the Super Bowl was over, we met in Cherry Creek at a bar, the piano bar there, and I said, it's probably nothing. It was already gone, I think. But I said, I'd like, you know, the table quarterback.

00:43:50:05 - 00:44:08:16

Unknown

And I said, I'm really interested. He's the only quarterback to ever have a zero passer rating. And they got blasted by the Cowboys. Yeah yeah the Super Bowl ten. Yeah Norris came in and he said to me I'm not giving you the tape. I'll give you 50 bucks to pay for the tape recorder. And I said, what do you mean you kept it all week.

00:44:08:16 - 00:44:26:20

Unknown

He said, I don't want anybody to ever hear that here. But here's what happened. He we talked about it for a while. He said, go ahead, because he was saying stuff about Tom glass that he couldn't play, that he was going to get killed in the game and he was killed. He said, I just don't want that to really be out there.

00:44:26:23 - 00:44:48:04

Unknown

Great guy. That short story I've told you guys at training camp in Fort Collins, he goes out to get a hamburger, had been drinking most of the night, pulled over by the police officers, and they said, what are you doing, Craig? Everybody knew all the players in Fort Collins, he said, I was just getting a hamburger at Burger King.

00:44:48:06 - 00:45:12:24

Unknown

Get in the car. We're going to take you back to, you know, one of us would drive you back to the dormitory, drove me back to the dormitory, said, we're not going to give you a ticket, you know, just calm down, okay? So they're out doing their paddling around, and there's Greg Morton in his car into a bar.

00:45:12:26 - 00:45:35:27

Unknown

Oh. Second runner. Yeah. You know what? They had to pull him over a second time and they said, are you going to burger again? So many guys from that team are no longer with us. But then I thought, you know, next year will be. But he put together 50 year anniversary. He put guys in their mid 20s. He was responsible Craig Morton you know he left here.

00:45:35:29 - 00:46:01:09

Unknown

It was a smoky at the end of his career here. People didn't really like him as much. He he he he he willed another 4 or 5 years out of his career. He played well here. But he put together he's with California for 100 years as a fundraiser in athletic department. Good guy. He'd come back for games. He'd come back for an annual.

00:46:01:10 - 00:46:24:14

Unknown

He was just fun. He was funny. You don't see that one fun to be around. He reached out to Jim Sakamoto and the and the Broncos and said, let's do something for the 77 team. So he was responsible for that. And I think my last thing to say is that without him, they wouldn't have had that, which they've never really appreciated in the correct way.

00:46:24:18 - 00:46:48:20

Unknown

He was responsible. And so that's kind of his last moment with the Broncos that he put together. Ron alluded to the importance, what he meant, because he gave them a reason to believe that they could win. And it was always about belief. With that 7017, they started to believe. The city started to believe the the league started to believe they beat the Raiders finally on that New Year's Day.

00:46:48:20 - 00:47:09:07

Unknown

And then they go on to the Super Bowl and it doesn't. But it's that that he gave them that. And he plays until 82, a strike shortened season where he's fading out. And then 83 is Elway. Yeah. So you draw the you can see the line and the question. But that was my line. The Orange Crush defense was terrific.

00:47:09:07 - 00:47:33:11

Unknown

It was ready to win. But they needed somebody on the other side of the ball who threatened who threatened and kind of galvanized everything. Yeah. And I thought a lot in the last 24 hours about Haven, Moses, Rick Upchurch, Jack Dalby, Billy Van. Yeah. All these guys that that had such a connection to Craig, you know. And I just think for linebackers though.

00:47:33:17 - 00:47:54:16

Unknown

Yeah that was a good man. Squad for horsemen. Well you know what. Not only not only the four linebackers you know Lyle, Reuben and Barney up front. And then behind him every third series John Grant Bryson manner. It's pretty good. Yeah. And Paul Smith there's a final moment. And he could have he could have prevented this if he really wanted to.

00:47:54:19 - 00:48:16:11

Unknown

But John always had the same number as he did. Yeah. And John went to him and he said, of course you can have seven. And that would be tough for a guy who's had a long, illustrious career, been in, what, three Super Bowls, had become Denver's favorite quarterback until and John Elway, John Elway. And he goes, yeah, you take it.

00:48:16:12 - 00:48:40:00

Unknown

And you don't see his in the stadium. You don't see Craig Morton's name. You see John Elway's number seven. And we've got two guys that we're the 18. Yeah. But those of us of a certain age will never forget. So if you what do you like. Like if you're in. And her father lived through that period of time.

00:48:40:00 - 00:49:07:23

Unknown

You were so young. But if you missed out. Craig Morton was the first quarterback of the Broncos. That was good. That's what I said. We had Charlie Johnson, Steve Ramsey, Steve Tennessee, Frank Puga. He was the first guy, quarterback wise that put us on the map, and they wouldn't have gone to the Super Bowl because they would have had who I called Colfax, Steve Ramsey.

00:49:07:27 - 00:49:24:13

Unknown

Still, teams that have never been Norris, we wouldn't have gotten them because Norris Weise took over and Norris was a good friend of mine. Norris took over as a starter from him and had to give it back to him because he wasn't that good. And the other quarterbacks that came along while he was here, they weren't any good.

Nobody. We don't know that Elway would have ever been here. Yeah, it could have been another ten years where there are nothing team. But Craig Morton stopped the bleeding. All those changes, they changed. He really did. And, you know, there were times when you could, when people would. But people picked on Elway. They picked on on on Manning.

00:49:47:02 - 00:50:07:05

Oh of course, but people Morton was a professional court. Morton was a professional quarterback. He was a professional quarterback. A couple more notes for this week's show, one right behind Woody. Want to take a look at the chalkboard today? It says, I am the king of King Kong of Gorilla Sports. It's a bold statement. That's a bold statement.

00:50:07:06 - 00:50:31:20

Woody. Hey. The Rockies hit the quarter pole on pace for 99, about 99 losses somewhere in the neighborhood of 63. 64 wins. Can they get to 70? Woody? Are they playing good enough to get to your magic? This is a better team. When I said quarterback Craig Morton was a professional quarterback, they've got some professional players, which is a change.

00:50:31:20 - 00:50:52:11

They've got D.H., they've got a first baseman, they've got a shortstop who's not hitting. But Tovar is an all star type stuff I'm not happy with. If you look at them objectively, you're going starting pitching. That they went out and got all those veterans is not really doing the job. They're their relief staffs, not their leading home runs.

00:50:52:11 - 00:51:14:28

Surrendered some of the usual, you know, their 29th or 30th and a lot of the pitching they are they're going to fight the Giants for last place in in the West. And they have a chance of beating the Giants because the Giants went out and hired a baseball coach in high school. Tennessee like I never I don't know.

00:51:14:28 - 00:51:40:07

Unknown

He's ever seen a major league giants have more talent though. And they'll probably as bad as they are. You're right. They're bad. They'll probably finish a few games ahead of the Rockies. So. But have you noticed anything notable of the Rockies? Same. Different. I noticed that they're better, but I will say this when you win 43 games, there's only one way to go and you can't really lose more than that.

00:51:40:11 - 00:52:01:21

Unknown

I think they're more competitive. I think they're excuse me, their losses are more competitive. I do like they're playing better. They're not going to win a lot of games, but they're playing. I think they get schemes tonight. But when they get Paul schemes tonight. Good luck with that. When do we use this. When do we as a Denver sports community start holding the bar a little higher for them?

00:52:01:27 - 00:52:25:08

Unknown

Well the attendance is down. Some of the lowest numbers recorded are coming in this year. And you know depending on who they're playing we're not going to hold them. Wind is right. When are you going? I tell you that's my question. He and I have a discussion about this and we won't go very far with it. When are we going to hold them to account when they're not owning the team?

00:52:25:11 - 00:52:43:27

Unknown

Well, that's a great. Give that clock. You're you're giving them a great pass, which is great. I mean, if you're saying that as long as Dick Monfort owns the team. Well, I'm just saying what is never hold them to a high standard. Well, then just accept what they are and move on. We did. They're going to lose 100 for the fourth year in a row.

00:52:43:27 - 00:53:03:01

And we'll all be okay with. We did a grinding gears for much. I wanted to come in today to tell you guys something you don't know that's going to change your life. Oh, Stuart Sink is on the senior tour. Yeah, you know that. He's won three tournaments already. He's still playing. Will probably play in the PGA. He's still playing games.

00:53:03:02 - 00:53:29:05

Unknown

Yeah. He went out and found a guy who on the practice tee puts a wooden block that shaped like a triangle. And he puts his left foot on that like a wedge. Like a wedge that he. And when he swings he takes the left foot off the wedge. And what we used to called, he put his foot in the bucket.

00:53:29:06 - 00:53:52:11

Unknown

In the bucket. When you were a baseball, you were told, don't ever do that. He is hitting 323 yards off the tees in his late 50s on the senior tour, he has discovered a real life in golf. And I want you guys are playing golfers. I want you to get up on the T and everybody that watches the plays golf.

00:53:52:13 - 00:54:24:11

Unknown

This is going to change the game. Forget about a guy that hits the ball 425 yards and can't figure out what tour is going to play on. He's going to play on the YouTube tour is where he's going to play YouTube channel, watch Stuart Sink on YouTube or something. He's blowing away the senior tour like he's hitting at 20 and 30 yards longer than anybody because he's got this new thing he talks about, which is just a little block, that you fly your left foot into the bucket, right.

00:54:24:12 - 00:54:42:23

Unknown

And he's doing that as long as he is he good enough, do you think, to get on the live tour? Is there still live tour? The live tour is just going to win the PGA this week. Well, first I think the live tour, would you say like if you were to ask Jared Bednar, I'd say week to week, day to day.

00:54:42:26 - 00:55:01:25

Unknown

I'll end this. I'm calling the live tour of the Die tour. Die tour I like it. All right, PGA, real quick. You have the usual suspects. Scottie, Rory, cam Young is. Now you took the. I think cam young people don't want to. He's the hottest player in the world. Yeah. He just doesn't have as much zip to his name.

00:55:01:26 - 00:55:28:14

Unknown

Well he's got he's got a personality bypass. Yeah, but but if you look at his game he's got it going. And did the live guys get to come over in this one. Is this another one coming over. Do you know Dustin Johnson I like fun for them to get on a pro tour for a week. Golfer named Tommy Fleetwood I think that Fleetwood is all Mac this week.

00:55:28:16 - 00:55:54:14

Unknown

You know Tommy, Tommy's done everything except win a lot on the PGA tour. Well, arena mink awaits. So I'm giving you a name. Fleetwood all. Mac, I got you. Yep. Yeah, that's gonna wrap it up. Hopefully you guys enjoyed Tommy, man. Hopefully you enjoyed this week's reference. Of course all you Lindsey Buckingham fans out there. And we will theoretically return next week.
