After the Horn

After the Horn Ep. 33 | Why the Broncos Didn't Beat the Patriots

Episode Summary

The Broncos’ season ends one win short of the Super Bowl, and on After the Horn, Woody Paige, Ron Zappolo, and Tom Green break down exactly why. From Sean Payton’s handling of Jarrett Stidham and fourth-down decisions, to missed field goals, weather preparation failures, officiating mistakes, and roster shortcomings, the panel lays out a comprehensive responsibility list for the AFC Championship loss to New England. The conversation expands to the larger idea of “championship windows,” arguing there is no future guarantee in the NFL — only now. The show closes with a deep look at the Broncos’ offseason priorities, coaching staff uncertainty, free-agent spending power, and how Denver stacks up in an increasingly competitive AFC. ‘After the Horn’ is sponsored in part by American Financing Visit: AmericanFinancing.net/Green NMLS 182334, nmlsconsumeraccess.org. Episode Notes

The panel begins by dissecting the Broncos’ AFC Championship loss and whether Sean Payton overvalued and oversold Jarrett Stidham after Bo Nix’s injury. Woody Paige presents an extensive list of responsibility that stretches beyond the quarterback, pointing to coaching decisions, missed field goals, poor weather preparation, the grounds crew, and even ownership. The discussion examines why Denver failed to adjust to the snow, why a field goal was passed up at a pivotal moment, and how New England was better prepared for the elements.

From there, the focus shifts to officiating errors, roster depth, and a lack of impact offensive skill players compared to teams still standing. The show then pivots to a broader philosophical debate about “windows” in the NFL, using historical Broncos examples and league trends to argue that championship chances are never guaranteed year to year. The episode wraps with a forward-looking breakdown of Denver’s offseason challenges, including potential coaching departures, draft position, free-agent spending, and the urgent need to upgrade at wide receiver, running back, and along the offensive line.

00;00;01;06 - 00;00;32;18

Tom Green

The highly anticipated steady show opened. Still less than rave reviews. We'll talk about what the Broncos did and didn't do. And what lies ahead. More importantly, on the bright side, it's almost time for the Rockies to get underway.

00;00;32;20 - 00;00;41;27

Ron Zappolo

You know, just watching that open, the Broncos could have used a couple of people that flashed bias there in that open. Hi, everybody. After the horn, Woody page, Tom Green runs.

00;00;41;29 - 00;00;42;10

Woody Paige

Glad to.

00;00;42;10 - 00;00;44;10

Speaker 2

Have you think pretty.

00;00;44;10 - 00;00;45;00

Tom Green

Much anybody.

00;00;45;01 - 00;00;45;06

Speaker 2

Pretty.

00;00;45;06 - 00;00;47;15

Ron Zappolo

Much anybody. Yeah we can go that route.

00;00;47;22 - 00;01;04;01

Tom Green

Hey, before we get underway, once again, tip of the cap to our friends at Furniture Row for supplying all this fine furniture. Otherwise, we'd be sitting on the floor and it would look weird. So, again, thanks to our friends at Furniture Row for being a part of our show here on After the Horn. I hope you guys saw the game on Sunday.

00;01;04;01 - 00;01;15;27

Tom Green

But the Broncos played. The bills came up short. Our bills the Patriots, they lose it ten seven by a final score. Which means that they don't go to the Super Bowl. But you guys might have already known all that.

00;01;15;29 - 00;01;18;14

Speaker 2

Yeah.

00;01;18;16 - 00;01;28;10

Woody Paige

I think we can get rid of, Steady City and call it now. Steady. Shitty.

00;01;28;12 - 00;01;31;00

Ron Zappolo

Or did he had more going than city?

00;01;31;06 - 00;01;53;16

Tom Green

There's a million things to talk about with this game. But let's start with was Sean Payton like he's going out of his way to keep Jarrett Stidham. And he thought Stuart Stidham was going to give him a football game. And did he completely mischaracterized the backup quarterback that he had. Because there are some teams that have a backup quarterback to go winning a football game like the one we saw Sunday.

00;01;53;20 - 00;01;54;24

Tom Green

Jarrett Stidham wasn't one of them.

00;01;54;24 - 00;01;57;19

Speaker 2

Nope.

00;01;57;21 - 00;02;02;26

Woody Paige

I would not put him steady. Gosh. Can we get past that started.

00;02;02;28 - 00;02;03;04

Ron Zappolo

Yeah.

00;02;03;04 - 00;02;38;15

Woody Paige

Stidham I would not put him at the responsible at the top of the responsible right I would put the coach for some of the things you said. I think he over valued Stidham. He over promoted him I think he over tried to do this not saying right. But he over tried to coach him in this game. And I think that because of him and what Payton realized he didn't kick that field.

00;02;38;17 - 00;02;58;15

Woody Paige

He should have kicked their field goal because. Right. It was not going well even though they started out the game with with the one touchdown. And he looked good on two passes in a row. But, I wondered at one point, do you go to the next backup? They've got two other guys over there.

00;02;58;16 - 00;03;11;23

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, they would have been worse. But you know what? I can't, I can criticize Sean Payton in the next hour for a lot of stuff, and I'm sure we will. He had to oversell Jared Stidham because I think he had to.

00;03;11;29 - 00;03;13;07

Woody Paige

Oversell to his players.

00;03;13;07 - 00;03;40;28

Ron Zappolo

To his players, to his players. I thought I mean he as soon as Bo Nix got hurt he started the I'm going to sell Jared Stidham to the other 50 guys. And I'm using that first news camp. Not not when he came back out and said can they hide this after the bills game. He's sending a message to his team because I guarantee you there were at least ten out of 50 players who probably when they heard that news said we're.

00;03;40;28 - 00;03;42;02

Tom Green

Fucked, we're done.

00;03;42;02 - 00;03;54;26

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, yeah. And he's spending those hours. And those first few days, not so much with Jared Stidham, but with the other guys convincing them that they can win.

00;03;54;26 - 00;04;03;25

Tom Green

I was surprised at Stidham looking unready for the moment. Because he is a veteran quarterback. He'd been in the league. Abed hadn't played in forever.

00;04;03;25 - 00;04;18;11

Ron Zappolo

Let me just play the but here's the deal I don't think there's anybody Tom that can not throw a pass since 2023. And parachute into a championship game and look decent.

00;04;18;11 - 00;04;22;10

Tom Green

Look like all he wanted to do was backpedal, get away, go back.

00;04;22;13 - 00;04;37;03

Woody Paige

To Dover Sanders. And that'll come up again in the program today, I guess because he's in the problem. He's in the Pro Bowl. So if you do I think we found just to throw this in there. I think we found the final reason, the final fucking.

00;04;37;03 - 00;04;38;01

Ron Zappolo

Reason.

00;04;38;03 - 00;04;41;03

Woody Paige

To not even call it a Pro Bowl. Call it.

00;04;41;03 - 00;04;42;02

Ron Zappolo

The amen.

00;04;42;05 - 00;04;49;28

Woody Paige

What do we do in high school then we have like field flag football field day. Yeah, we'll build that where you get in data sacks and stuff if.

00;04;50;01 - 00;04;54;08

Tom Green

If you can't make it. Jarrett Stidham is next in line to play in the Pro Bowl.

00;04;54;09 - 00;05;13;28

Ron Zappolo

But I agree with Woody on this Jared Stidham is not at the top of the list. He was he was ill equipped to do it. He made a mistake that cost them the game. But I agree that I'm not going to put him at the top of the list.

00;05;14;02 - 00;05;15;14

Tom Green

Now that's that Sean Payton.

00;05;15;14 - 00;05;15;26

Ron Zappolo

That's on.

00;05;16;00 - 00;05;18;03

Tom Green

Top of the move. Yep. Culpable.

00;05;18;05 - 00;05;41;14

Woody Paige

Before I came down here today, I, I put down 16 people that were responsible for this defeat. And I felt like that there's about 14 of them that are not getting the responsibility held. And Sean Payton said topless. But look, let me throw one at you sure that you haven't thought about nobody has thought about this.

00;05;41;17 - 00;05;42;13

Ron Zappolo

Oh, Terry.

00;05;42;15 - 00;06;14;21

Woody Paige

The ownership. And I'm going to tell you why they're building that new, edifice out there, people talking about it. In fact, Gary Bowles say, well, look what we're building over here. It's going to bring free agents. This stadium had heating calls under it for years. What happened to them. Because when it started to snow and this is not going to stay on the ground because they have a heating system under there.

00;06;14;23 - 00;06;44;19

Woody Paige

I haven't addressed anybody. I don't know who to address about this. Maybe Patrick Smith and say would somebody go and ask what happened to the heating system that was supposed to prevent this? This is just like Denver International Airport when I was when I was a general columnist and I was fighting Federico Pena and actually had a private meeting with him at a bank and, I said, I'm going to fight you on the new airport as long as you keep saying it will never close.

00;06;44;20 - 00;06;46;11

Woody Paige

Yeah. Guess what? It closed three times.

00;06;46;11 - 00;06;46;22

Speaker 2

Over the.

00;06;46;27 - 00;07;03;03

Woody Paige

Last three days. It's not like a waffle House. They do have to have a key because they close it all the time. But that heating system and people going, you're starting with that. That might have made a major difference in that game if the field hadn't become so unplayable.

00;07;03;08 - 00;07;10;27

Ron Zappolo

Does this beg the question now, should this should all these cold weather places have domes?

00;07;10;29 - 00;07;29;20

Tom Green

It's different now because we tend to think of all the cold weather places. I think those teams used to present cold weather football. They had bruising running backs. They were built to do it. Their defensive lines were built to attack the run. They were going to be downhill teams. And every team in the NFL now is all just based on speed, speed, speed, speed.

00;07;29;23 - 00;07;37;18

Tom Green

So when you hit this because they're all indoors, they all play on turf. They all play in warm weather except for a handful. Well, the handful came and got Denver.

00;07;37;18 - 00;07;57;29

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, the handful came in. The handful was named Mike Vrabel because he had a better day and he coach Sean Payton. His team was far better prepared to play a game in the elements. Now he had an advantage. He had a better quarterback and he had a quarterback that could use his legs. But when the weather got bad, what did New England do?

00;07;58;00 - 00;07;59;10

Ron Zappolo

They ran the football three.

00;07;59;10 - 00;08;00;05

Tom Green

Times and kicked.

00;08;00;05 - 00;08;10;28

Ron Zappolo

It. Raymond Ray Stevenson didn't kill him. He's not one of the ten best backs in the NFL, but he's a big, tough, bruising back, the kind the Denver does not possess.

00;08;10;29 - 00;08;14;02

Tom Green

Their offensive line had a better day than the Broncos by far line.

00;08;14;02 - 00;08;36;23

Woody Paige

And some of the thought here again that hasn't come up. That if this weather had appeared the last last week, I think they'd have had the same sort of problems. I'm talking about the Broncos. Yeah, Josh Allen loves playing in the snow and did it in Wyoming. And Buffalo used to playing in the snow. And that saved Denver that it wasn't a game in the snow.

00;08;36;24 - 00;08;58;12

Tom Green

Isn't it an interesting though because the 1:00 start time is unique. The games are, you know, either 11:00 or 2:00. They started at one. They get to halftime, they come back out and it's like a wall hit. At halftime, the meteorology changed entirely. And it's just the timing of the serendipitous timing of it. If that was a 2:00 start, the snow would have come in.

00;08;58;12 - 00;09;03;13

Ron Zappolo

But Sean, these people are privy to weather forecast.

00;09;03;16 - 00;09;04;26

Tom Green

Did you have a television?

00;09;04;28 - 00;09;08;27

Ron Zappolo

I mean, you kind of had to know that weather was coming.

00;09;08;27 - 00;09;38;19

Woody Paige

Yeah, I was out at halftime, when the snow started. Are they changing cleats? I said, I don't think they brought a snow type cleat right to the game. Here I go. Take you guys back and you're old enough to remember. And I don't know how many viewers and listeners will understand this, but George Allen was a great coach in the NFL with Washington before a Super Bowl game against Miami.

00;09;38;21 - 00;10;02;18

Woody Paige

He went out the day before and checked out where the sun was going to be when the game started. When it was halftime, he stood out there for about 2.5 hours and checked the location of the sun. Don't you think it would have made sense for somebody to bring crispier gear? Some meteorologists out there you've worked with some good ones.

00;10;02;18 - 00;10;23;08

Woody Paige

There's Kathy Saban, for instance, and say, let's walk through this and what are we going to do if this happens? It was as if they didn't know there was going to be a snowstorm. I think that Payton thinks he's so smart that he'd figured out, well, that's not going to bother us. Did you check to see if there was a heating system, a call system underneath this?

00;10;23;11 - 00;10;26;04

Woody Paige

George would have. So he. Yes, that's George.

00;10;26;04 - 00;10;30;08

Ron Zappolo

Allen was one of my all time favorite people. I learned.

00;10;30;10 - 00;10;31;24

Woody Paige

I saw you nodding when I said.

00;10;31;24 - 00;10;51;00

Ron Zappolo

That. George Allen I grew up as a kid reporter in Washington, DC, and my job was to go out and interview George Allen every week during the season. And I developed a relationship with him, God rest his soul. He was a great guy. He was one of the most colorful, colorful characters ever in the history of the NFL.

00;10;51;00 - 00;11;13;17

Ron Zappolo

And you're 100% right on because I was there. He did have people go out and check where the sun would be at certain hours. He was way ahead when it came to leaving no stone unturned. Yes. So why wouldn't the Broncos have known to at least a fairly close what the weather's going to be?

00;11;13;17 - 00;11;23;12

Tom Green

That's where all old guys, even before our time, was the famous sneakers game, the NFL championship game where one team went out and got the sneakers and they were able to run on the icy field.

00;11;23;12 - 00;11;24;07

Woody Paige

There was a giant.

00;11;24;07 - 00;11;26;06

Tom Green

Giants and bears. I think we played that one.

00;11;26;06 - 00;11;27;03

Ron Zappolo

So so you.

00;11;27;03 - 00;11;28;16

Woody Paige

Know what responsibility.

00;11;28;20 - 00;11;32;20

Ron Zappolo

If Jared Stidham doesn't make an ungodly mistake.

00;11;32;22 - 00;11;33;06

Tom Green

Yeah.

00;11;33;06 - 00;11;36;19

Ron Zappolo

On one play they might still be playing well.

00;11;36;19 - 00;11;39;03

Tom Green

Whoever had the lead at halftime was whoever.

00;11;39;03 - 00;11;41;21

Ron Zappolo

Turned the ball over more was got the lead was going to lose.

00;11;41;21 - 00;11;47;16

Woody Paige

But I'm going to go through these responsible people. Top ten and I want your reactions to them.

00;11;47;18 - 00;12;03;10

Ron Zappolo

Will Lutz he's up there. You know. Can I say something about that. He comes out, I guess, after the game, correct me if I'm wrong and says, well, the reason the ball got tipped was because we weren't far enough back.

00;12;03;11 - 00;12;03;28

Tom Green

We didn't line up.

00;12;03;28 - 00;12;12;09

Ron Zappolo

We didn't line up properly because it was snowing. How many? 10,020 thousand and 30,000 times in practice? If you kicked the field.

00;12;12;09 - 00;12;13;23

Tom Green

Goal with drew that the next day, we.

00;12;13;23 - 00;12;14;22

Ron Zappolo

Better have, he said.

00;12;14;27 - 00;12;17;29

Tom Green

Well, he looked at it. He said he looked at the film and they were set up just fine.

00;12;18;00 - 00;12;36;14

Ron Zappolo

That's an excuse. Yeah, that's an excuse. Don't make excuses. Own it. I mean, you all, he his only job is to practice kicking field goals. To his point. Don't don't tell me as a as somebody who watched the game. Hey, it wasn't my fault we didn't line up properly, so.

00;12;36;15 - 00;12;52;06

Woody Paige

No. So he misses two field goals. They don't go for another field goal, which is the chip shot field goal. I'm also on my list of responsible people. Was the grounds crew. You again are not prepared. They had one guy with a snowblower.

00;12;52;06 - 00;12;56;06

Ron Zappolo

Should have got the guy from New England. When, back in the day when they cleared.

00;12;56;09 - 00;12;57;08

Tom Green

For John Smith.

00;12;57;08 - 00;12;57;29

Ron Zappolo

Later for John.

00;12;58;00 - 00;13;15;16

Woody Paige

Smith hauled off. I mean, they could have had a long, timeout and bring out some people. And because whether he's right or wrong, Will Lutz you couldn't see CBS was trying to put superimposed the.

00;13;15;19 - 00;13;27;25

Tom Green

Well, they also had to tell you like you'd see the ball after a punt and you'd see him line up and it would take him about 30s and they're finally there at the line of scrimmage, and they finally say they're at the 30. Yeah, because there's no they could be anywhere.

00;13;27;25 - 00;13;33;12

Ron Zappolo

There's no excuse for the field goal kick team not to know how many yards back.

00;13;33;12 - 00;13;33;27

Woody Paige

That's what I'm saying.

00;13;33;27 - 00;13;40;00

Ron Zappolo

That's all you do. That's all you practice. And I don't care if you don't see any yard lines. You got to know. How far back.

00;13;40;00 - 00;13;44;14

Tom Green

Do you think the NFL and the Broncos would have made sure that there were plenty of grounds?

00;13;44;14 - 00;13;51;24

Woody Paige

I'm good. My next list is not Vic Lombardi, but, Joe Lombardi. Who is.

00;13;51;27 - 00;13;52;06

Tom Green

The oh.

00;13;52;06 - 00;14;01;29

Woody Paige

Somewhere in there is an offensive coordinator and Davis Webb, who's suddenly the coach too. You were about either the Raiders or the bills.

00;14;01;29 - 00;14;02;28

Speaker 2

Maybe. Yeah.

00;14;03;00 - 00;14;32;29

Woody Paige

Why aren't they saying John, come down off that ledge, kick the field goal. Why is he not getting some advice? It's quite possible Sean Payton won't listen to anybody. But you've got some offensive minds over there. They're pretty strong that call the plays in the preseason Lombardi and Webb. Yeah, and did a pretty good job. They scored an average of 30 points in the preseason games.

00;14;33;01 - 00;14;35;17

Woody Paige

Why not. Somebody got it's like.

00;14;35;17 - 00;14;36;06

Tom Green

Anyone.

00;14;36;08 - 00;14;42;19

Woody Paige

Forgive me. It's like almost the president of the United States not getting it. Good advice people.

00;14;42;20 - 00;14;43;10

Ron Zappolo

Deserve.

00;14;43;12 - 00;14;52;08

Woody Paige

Hey, let's stop doing this. But I think you got to give the responsibility to the people surrounding them. They've got analytic people. They got it, you know.

00;14;52;09 - 00;15;05;05

Ron Zappolo

Well, the hold on the analytic people are going to tell them to go for it. That's one of the problems now, although I think you hold every swinging dick in the NFL. Now who's the coach. Pardon my French goes for it on fourth down.

00;15;05;07 - 00;15;06;07

Woody Paige

Because the French were.

00;15;06;07 - 00;15;31;16

Ron Zappolo

Well I think it is I mean Dan Campbell started this about five years ago. Everybody goes forward on fourth down all the time. Every situation. And and I think part of the reason why Woody is because the analytics people are taking the data, they run the same thing. 10,000 times. Right. And it comes they don't take into consideration.

00;15;31;17 - 00;15;32;03

Tom Green

I was told.

00;15;32;03 - 00;15;32;06

Ron Zappolo

The.

00;15;32;06 - 00;15;43;11

Tom Green

Game, yeah, the Wolves, the tight end turned broadcaster, said in criticizing Mark Earth, who said he hates analytics. He said the analytics would have told you in this case to kick the field goal.

00;15;43;15 - 00;15;46;07

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, but here's the point. I don't mind the analytics.

00;15;46;11 - 00;15;48;02

Tom Green

No you can't. Good information.

00;15;48;02 - 00;16;11;15

Ron Zappolo

Yes. Good. If you can't make every to his point, you can't make every decision based on analytics. Because if the analytics guy is saying to you Sunday, kick the field goal, the head coach, the human being should be saying to himself, wait a minute, I got a backup quarterback. Bad weather's coming. Ten points might look really good in this game.

00;16;11;16 - 00;16;13;26

Ron Zappolo

Some of this is a very close third day.

00;16;13;28 - 00;16;17;23

Tom Green

Like he knew how his offense was and wasn't going to run with number eight.

00;16;17;26 - 00;16;23;05

Ron Zappolo

You can't tell me that he was stunned over the way his office.

00;16;23;05 - 00;16;25;13

Tom Green

He waffled. It was he waffled on Sunday.

00;16;25;13 - 00;16;27;27

Woody Paige

Talk talked about Jason Stidham.

00;16;28;00 - 00;16;29;17

Tom Green

Steve Jason Jerry throwing.

00;16;29;17 - 00;16;34;00

Ron Zappolo

Everything you know Jason Sudeikis deserve. He doesn't deserve for you to get his name right.

00;16;34;00 - 00;16;35;22

Woody Paige

I figure the people in horror movies.

00;16;35;25 - 00;16;38;23

Speaker 2

Will like they're,

00;16;38;25 - 00;16;58;09

Woody Paige

On the play. The backward and forward. Right. That's tipped whatever might been, you know, come back to that in a minute. But there's a running back in the game. They're number three running back who gets lost in the crowd. And if he'd done what he was supposed to do on that play, it was an easy pass to him.

00;16;58;13 - 00;17;03;23

Woody Paige

But if you look at go back and look at the film, you'll see that batty you might do it by day by day.

00;17;03;27 - 00;17;05;02

Ron Zappolo

Whatever his name is.

00;17;05;05 - 00;17;27;13

Woody Paige

Got stuck and he didn't go in the right direction. And as a result, Stidham had nobody to throw to at that point. And that's when he fell apart. A good, experienced playing all the time. Quarterback like Bo Nix would have taken off and run on the play or taken a sack. One of the two things. Instead we saw that play.

00;17;27;13 - 00;17;28;04

Woody Paige

That was.

00;17;28;06 - 00;17;29;18

Tom Green

The play.

00;17;29;20 - 00;17;29;28

Woody Paige

Leads.

00;17;29;29 - 00;17;30;08

Ron Zappolo

What is.

00;17;30;08 - 00;17;48;07

Woody Paige

Tyler do? Do I give responsibility to the officials? Totally screwed up the play. So you got bad day, you got Stidham and you got the officials who don't know what they're doing on the play. And to this moment, I still don't think you got it right. Because the pass was tipped by the guy that was.

00;17;48;09 - 00;17;50;02

Tom Green

On your list. You were doing their list.

00;17;50;02 - 00;17;53;25

Woody Paige

Because because on the play, if you look at it he's running.

00;17;53;25 - 00;17;56;09

Tom Green

Back. Instead of going up. He goes all the way around.

00;17;56;11 - 00;18;00;24

Ron Zappolo

Sean Payton though. Yeah. He had no business being in the game. I didn't see I didn't see.

00;18;00;25 - 00;18;06;26

Woody Paige

Puts him in the game you stupid. Watched all season long. I yes, all that all was New England's third plane back.

00;18;06;26 - 00;18;08;10

Ron Zappolo

I didn't seem to see him in the game.

00;18;08;11 - 00;18;09;06

Tom Green

Didn't make it on the field.

00;18;09;06 - 00;18;20;11

Ron Zappolo

He didn't make it to the field. It's the championship game. If you're going to throw the ball on third and long and you're going to set up that kind of a screen, RJ Harvey catches the ball out of the back.

00;18;20;11 - 00;18;22;08

Tom Green

He seemed to be running pretty well. He ran.

00;18;22;08 - 00;18;25;17

Ron Zappolo

He's the guy who's running. They're not your third string running back.

00;18;25;17 - 00;18;48;21

Woody Paige

But they put him in all season long on that third down play. It's like McLaughlin the backup running back every time they put him in the game he's going to run the ball because he can't pass block. He is not a blocking back in the backfield. So anybody that's got any sense on the other team says they're putting in McLaughlin.

00;18;48;23 - 00;18;54;20

Woody Paige

They're going to run him. And they did. They ran him twice and he ran pretty well the first of 5 or 6 yards first time and good.

00;18;54;20 - 00;18;57;08

Tom Green

Well we're going to talk about talent. Third string. There's a third.

00;18;57;08 - 00;18;58;24

Ron Zappolo

String anywhere it gets you beat.

00;18;58;24 - 00;19;21;24

Tom Green

If you watch the first game. In the second game on Sunday, you saw a gap in talent between the Broncos and the Rams and the Seahawks. The Rams and the Seahawks have running backs and wide receivers who make plays scare defenses. You have to deal with them every single snap. And you look at the Broncos and they I don't think they scared anybody in those positions moving ahead.

00;19;21;24 - 00;19;33;15

Woody Paige

But the best news that maybe Broncos fans can get during their mourning period is you would have been destroyed by Seattle like you were in Super Bowl.

00;19;33;17 - 00;19;35;21

Ron Zappolo

Well before you got here.

00;19;35;23 - 00;19;36;28

Tom Green

It looked like that might be.

00;19;37;00 - 00;19;39;14

Ron Zappolo

Kind of shared that same opinion.

00;19;39;16 - 00;19;42;06

Tom Green

But so anybody else on your list before.

00;19;42;09 - 00;20;09;15

Woody Paige

I could get some more. I can't leave the officials. There were two plays in the game that the officials messed up spots. Did they right or are they responsible? Yes. They're responsible. They didn't hail it. Like guys should be, officiating in a championship game. Right? You got to play. We talked about it. There are possibilities. You know, if you get the approved of film, you would see that the ball was tipped.

00;20;09;18 - 00;20;13;15

Woody Paige

So when it's tipped, it doesn't matter whether it goes backwards. Afford it.

00;20;13;18 - 00;20;16;07

Tom Green

If he was, if he is, the impetus had it going forward.

00;20;16;10 - 00;20;32;09

Woody Paige

But the other was on the fourth and one quarterback sneak and shot. And Sean Payton, I'll give him credit for this, was telling them to look up at the guy. Can't I can't because it's crystal down. Yeah I mean I've looked at it from behind.

00;20;32;09 - 00;20;34;10

Ron Zappolo

It's hard to officiate the touch push.

00;20;34;10 - 00;20;46;17

Tom Green

Well we also talked about this. Ron always talks about nothing better than having a couple of 58 year old guys running from 23 yards away on the side, and I kind of spot a ball in a pile of 14 men just.

00;20;46;19 - 00;20;51;13

Woody Paige

Looked at every possible angle. It wouldn't have been the first down. Here's the deal.

00;20;51;15 - 00;21;04;14

Ron Zappolo

You know what? I'm not going to feel bad for Denver for this. A week ago, there was an interception in overtime that should have been looked at and it was conveniently said, play on. So you win some, you lose some.

00;21;04;14 - 00;21;06;21

Woody Paige

But that's been the point of this playoff game.

00;21;06;22 - 00;21;27;00

Ron Zappolo

Tell me about it. The officiating. I've been sitting in here for 12 weeks talking about 65 year old guys wearing thicker glasses than me running down the field trying to keep up. It's ridiculous. As you said, it's a multi-billion dollar business. They can do better and they should.

00;21;27;03 - 00;21;28;13

Woody Paige

Go through the rest of me. Yeah.

00;21;28;13 - 00;21;28;24

Ron Zappolo

They're good.

00;21;28;25 - 00;21;31;06

Woody Paige

Let's call it offensive line.

00;21;31;08 - 00;21;32;09

Ron Zappolo

Played poorly that.

00;21;32;09 - 00;21;33;06

Speaker 2

Day, no doubt.

00;21;33;09 - 00;21;35;06

Woody Paige

The wide receivers didn't catch football.

00;21;35;06 - 00;21;36;09

Ron Zappolo

Dropped too many passes.

00;21;36;09 - 00;21;42;24

Woody Paige

Got it all pro right here. And he doesn't have a great game Benito.

00;21;42;24 - 00;21;44;03

Tom Green

He had one one good play one.

00;21;44;03 - 00;21;47;02

Ron Zappolo

He had a good game. But the defense in general.

00;21;47;04 - 00;21;48;22

Tom Green

You can't complain about the defense.

00;21;48;22 - 00;21;50;05

Ron Zappolo

Played extremely well. Gave me enough to.

00;21;50;05 - 00;21;52;04

Woody Paige

Edge rushers were not to give up.

00;21;52;04 - 00;21;53;02

Tom Green

Three points as.

00;21;53;09 - 00;21;53;21

Ron Zappolo

They give up.

00;21;53;21 - 00;21;55;05

Tom Green

Three points. They gave up a handful of.

00;21;55;10 - 00;22;09;29

Ron Zappolo

The quarterback, which I don't can't blame defenses for. Did on a couple of third downs. Trying to throw it, brought it down, scrambled, ran for a first down. That's going to happen. The defense gave up three points. They came to play. They did their job.

00;22;10;01 - 00;22;25;22

Woody Paige

And I add this and I don't know who to blame for this. Maybe Greenlaw, but the quarterback for the Patriots on the last play. Would the Broncos have won? I don't think so. No. But they let him go outside.

00;22;25;24 - 00;22;26;28

Ron Zappolo

Yeah got it done.

00;22;26;28 - 00;22;30;13

Woody Paige

I got by him on that one plague.

00;22;30;13 - 00;22;31;25

Ron Zappolo

Because you got to know they're going to know.

00;22;31;25 - 00;22;38;02

Woody Paige

He's their leading rusher. Yes. He's the only person on the field that's actually rushing for yardage.

00;22;38;02 - 00;22;45;23

Ron Zappolo

But if the three of us know he's going to run the ball there, which we did they got a no. And you're right you can't let him run free.

00;22;45;24 - 00;22;50;22

Tom Green

I want to talk about the future a little bit. And by doing that I'd like to visit the pass since we're old guys.

00;22;50;24 - 00;22;52;15

Woody Paige

Anyway, I think I did.

00;22;52;15 - 00;22;53;25

Ron Zappolo

You get most of them because they're good.

00;22;53;25 - 00;22;59;01

Woody Paige

Yes, I covered everybody. Except, I'd like to blame ice for it.

00;22;59;03 - 00;23;00;23

Ron Zappolo

We could do that, too. That, you.

00;23;00;23 - 00;23;01;16

Tom Green

Know. Oh, man.

00;23;01;21 - 00;23;06;01

Ron Zappolo

We could do that. But you're Sean Payton's that your top right?

00;23;06;04 - 00;23;06;28

Woody Paige

Yes. Okay.

00;23;07;03 - 00;23;15;09

Tom Green

And he. Well, you wonder about self-reflection because I don't I'm not sure Sean might be good at that. He did seem different after the game than normally. Normally he wants to fight about it with the.

00;23;15;09 - 00;23;16;07

Ron Zappolo

Media seem that.

00;23;16;07 - 00;23;33;02

Tom Green

Way. And I get the feeling he knew that he owned. Yeah, he owned this one. So, to talk about the future, I want to start with the past because we talk with people who say the Broncos window is what we look at now. Their window is wide open. No, Ron and I are like, on, you know, the window.

00;23;33;05 - 00;23;52;02

Tom Green

It's today's window is all that matters because nothing is guaranteed down the line. You're not getting better. You just you just go to the next year and see what you got. 1991 in the championship game, the Broncos went to Buffalo and lost, ten seven, in a weather game with their backup quarterback Gary Kubiak play bad.

00;23;52;02 - 00;23;53;10

Ron Zappolo

Treadwell missed a few field.

00;23;53;10 - 00;23;54;10

Tom Green

Goal three, I think.

00;23;54;10 - 00;23;56;06

Ron Zappolo

I think he did. Yeah, I don't want to pick on him.

00;23;56;07 - 00;24;18;29

Tom Green

But but you look at what happened to that team. So they were, you know, 12 and four or whatever they were. They were good enough to win a Super Bowl even. And they didn't. After that season, their offensive coordinator, Mike Shanahan, leaves. He goes to San Francisco. And then in the spring, they draft with John Elway. Definitely wanted to have at his side Tommy Maddox.

00;24;19;01 - 00;24;39;04

Tom Green

And so now instead of getting him something to help and grow, they've got someone with your first round pick. So what happens now if you're the Broncos how do you take care of your coaching staff. You're talking about two guys, Davis Webb and, Vance Joseph might be leaving. What you do in the draft. The good news is they're going to have money to spend.

00;24;39;05 - 00;24;49;09

Tom Green

This is the finally, the freedom from Russell Wilson. Springtime that's coming ahead for the Broncos. But that window run, everyone likes to act like the windows right there.

00;24;49;09 - 00;25;13;04

Ron Zappolo

You and I are in agreement on this. I remember 4 or 5 years ago when Dan Campbell burst on the scene and they got beat in the championship game, and everybody said, the Lions window is now open and they've gotten progressively worse every year. The you are 100% correct. The window is now George Allen used to famously say the future is now.

00;25;13;07 - 00;25;32;00

Ron Zappolo

Yes. Do you know there are no such things as windows? You don't know what the future is going to. The future is now. This was the window. You might never be a number one seed again. With two home games to go to a Super Bowl. This was the window. Next year is next year.

00;25;32;01 - 00;25;39;14

Tom Green

Dan Marino went to a Super Bowl and he said what did they say. And he was going to he was going to play in eight Super Bowls. Yes, he was going to be there every year.

00;25;39;14 - 00;25;40;18

Speaker 2

You never got a year.

00;25;40;25 - 00;25;46;16

Ron Zappolo

Never. The window is now. You don't know what the future holds. You don't know what coaches will.

00;25;46;20 - 00;25;46;29

Woody Paige

Even.

00;25;46;29 - 00;25;47;27

Ron Zappolo

Win with players.

00;25;47;27 - 00;26;09;16

Woody Paige

And just to say about windows opening and closing John Elway went to Super Bowls. Then you can go to Super Bowls for 7 or 8 years. Guess who didn't go to Super Bowls? He went twice, lost one, but he didn't go to the Super Bowl every year. Didn't go to the AFC Championship every year. And that Peyton Manning, there are two best quarterbacks, two Hall of Famers.

00;26;09;19 - 00;26;30;29

Woody Paige

And so again, I don't like agreeing with you guys on a regular basis, but you're that's all completely right that this might know here that the Chargers have just hired a great offensive coordinator. It might be Daniel. He may get Justin Herbert to finally play a game of football.

00;26;31;00 - 00;26;33;08

Tom Green

He might get healthy tackles Eric.

00;26;33;08 - 00;26;57;19

Woody Paige

But the enemy is gone back to the Kansas City Chiefs. Is that good or bad? For they must like him so much that after he's failed in like two different places, he's coming back to the Chiefs. The Chiefs are going to load up again. Chargers are going to get better I think, than they were. And even the Raiders might sign as their coach.

00;26;57;22 - 00;27;20;06

Woody Paige

One of the reasons why the Broncos got to the AFC Championship. And Davis Webb I think he ends up they're going to do a mike Shanahan kind of deal again, I think it's an Al Davis move where he always hired young coaches because he was a young head coach. So you're you're spot on in regard to you didn't take advantage of this situation.

00;27;20;08 - 00;27;35;28

Woody Paige

It didn't matter whether you go going to lose. If they'd gone to the Super Bowl and got blown out like they were against the 40 niners, 55 to 10, the Manning led Broncos that lost. What was it, 48.

00;27;35;28 - 00;27;36;28

Speaker 2

49 or.

00;27;36;28 - 00;27;37;29

Ron Zappolo

9 or it's.

00;27;38;00 - 00;28;03;24

Woody Paige

A 46 to 8, maybe something. Anyway, this may not happen again because, they also could lose some coaches. Jim Leonard who is the number two defensive coordinator Vance Joseph I don't think is going to get a job. We haven't heard that anybody hasn't thought about inviting him back. And they're now whittling down the number of coaching spots.

00;28;03;24 - 00;28;23;03

Woody Paige

So I think Vance Joseph, who was at the top of the list a because he's a good defensive coordinator, be the Rooney Rule. Yeah, but he was the guy that everybody wanted to take care of the Rooney Rule. But and I thought if he left, Jim Leonard is a guy that people are talking to for defensive coordinator.

00;28;23;10 - 00;28;32;29

Woody Paige

He's a guy that's really loved out there. So Davis, if they lost Davis, Webb and Jim Leonard, you got to go out and find some really good coaches to replace them.

00;28;32;29 - 00;28;52;10

Tom Green

So the Tommy Maddox pick goes down as one of the Broncos bigger mistakes. Not let Tommy Maddox couldn't play football. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time here with Denver. And it was a big blunder for the Broncos because they could have added a real weapon. We always talk about Carl Pickens or someone who is a great receiver, who could have really helped Elway in the offense this past year.

00;28;52;12 - 00;29;12;27

Tom Green

The Broncos, maybe not thinking they were going to be in this position, use their first round pick on today, Baron. He played five plays. He played okay for a rookie during the year, but not a first round level player. But when you watch a Jackson Smith in Jig Bo, you watch Kenneth Walker, you watch some of the high end talent Kyren Williams and Puka, and these guys have played in that NFC Championship game.

00;29;12;29 - 00;29;33;08

Tom Green

The Broncos, if they do think their window is now they now picking 30th, which will make it tougher. But with all that free agent money must address, they're the impact offensive player. Whether it's a wide receiver running back, maybe they'll ever get a tight end.

00;29;33;08 - 00;29;34;01

Ron Zappolo

I'd say both.

00;29;34;08 - 00;29;35;29

Tom Green

Oh, I would think all of all of you.

00;29;35;29 - 00;29;55;25

Woody Paige

Know what the biggest joke in Denver is? There is only one joker in Denver. The other Joker was a joker, and he even admitted, I'm not a joker. We're talking about a tight end. Yeah, he says, I'm going to be better next year. I'm not going to be injured. He was injured again this year. He was injured last year.

00;29;56;02 - 00;29;58;18

Woody Paige

Dobbs was injured last year before.

00;29;58;22 - 00;29;59;11

Ron Zappolo

Injured his whole.

00;29;59;11 - 00;30;00;14

Tom Green

Career Kevin Ingram getting.

00;30;00;18 - 00;30;01;27

Woody Paige

50 catches on one.

00;30;01;27 - 00;30;02;15

Tom Green

Touchdown.

00;30;02;15 - 00;30;24;09

Woody Paige

Well but look I must tell you, forgive me for interrupting. They took a chance on a bunch of guys who were injured for the last 4 or 5 years. Greenlaw. Yeah. How many games did he play this year? How much of a difference did he make? Only thing he did was he patted the New England quarterback after he went out of bounds and said, nice job there.

00;30;24;09 - 00;30;37;29

Woody Paige

He actually did compliment him. So I think that you can't depend on guys. Even Bo Nix has a history of ankle injuries. He's had one. They cleaned up his ankle last year after.

00;30;37;29 - 00;30;50;00

Tom Green

His for they'll have money to spend. And they you know I don't I don't do salary cap math. I don't spend a lot of time on it. But what I've seen is they can restructure several contracts. There are some guys.

00;30;50;03 - 00;30;51;06

Woody Paige

They're off the Russell Wilson.

00;30;51;06 - 00;30;52;01

Tom Green

Yeah, but that's.

00;30;52;03 - 00;31;11;25

Ron Zappolo

Write about this, though. You can't just sign guys who are injured to one year deals and hope strategy. You know that's why I get upset. I'm a Red Sox fan. Craig Breslow is their GM. He spent the last three years signing guys to one year deal coming off Tommy John surgery because they were good three years ago. Yeah, well it doesn't work that way.

00;31;11;27 - 00;31;32;04

Ron Zappolo

If the Broncos really want to improve. He's right. You have to go out, be willing to spend that. I think they are willing to spend unlike other franchises, but they have to identify the talent and then go out and aggressively sign it. I read in the paper, well, they might like Wandel Robinson one. Bill Robinson's not going to help him.

00;31;32;04 - 00;31;33;04

Ron Zappolo

I've watched him play every.

00;31;33;09 - 00;31;34;15

Tom Green

Other guy's career.

00;31;34;17 - 00;31;56;12

Ron Zappolo

There's a small, diminutive Brandon Stokely, Victor Cruz type. Those guys are great players. But in today's NFL, the receivers you're talking about, they're big guys. Okay, you need to go out and get your whatever year Jackson Smith in the jig biz. You better go find him. The second thing you better do you can't come back with the same running backs in that room.

00;31;56;15 - 00;32;10;14

Ron Zappolo

You can bring those guys back, but the top guy can't be a guy who's heard all the time like Jake Dobbins. And it's got to be a guy that in January, when the weather's bad, they look at him and go, hey, listen, it's on you.

00;32;10;14 - 00;32;20;21

Tom Green

And you also by then have rushed for 1200 yards. That's something behind an offensive line that believes in their running game instead of kind of going, you know, we'll try to get a couple here and a couple there.

00;32;20;23 - 00;32;30;21

Ron Zappolo

You say what you want about New England, but they won the game in no small part because basically they were able to run the ball better than Denver was this much.

00;32;30;21 - 00;32;32;06

Tom Green

But that's all at once you got ahead.

00;32;32;10 - 00;32;46;08

Ron Zappolo

Once you start running and you shorten the game and Denver's got what, three offensive plays in the third quarter because Stephenson's running for four and five yards a pop. That means a lot in Denver. And clever to do it. They couldn't do it.

00;32;46;10 - 00;32;50;07

Tom Green

Well the off season for the Broncos because you know, you got the window.

00;32;50;10 - 00;32;52;04

Ron Zappolo

The window. Yeah the window.

00;32;52;06 - 00;32;53;13

Tom Green

And we'll see what happens.

00;32;53;13 - 00;32;53;21

Ron Zappolo

Yeah.

00;32;53;22 - 00;33;03;08

Woody Paige

They've got to get wide receivers have to talked about. They got to get two wide receivers. They've got to get a running back. Have to they have got to get a left guard.

00;33;03;08 - 00;33;04;20

Tom Green

Do you think they'll ever have a tight end.

00;33;04;27 - 00;33;19;09

Woody Paige

Bowers despite the talk about the offensive line Ben Bowers has been a it has been a great world class player since he's gotten here. And you got to get another cornerback in my opinion because you're shy there.

00;33;19;11 - 00;33;33;13

Tom Green

And unless they think today is the guy and Moss, you know Moss, they they have all those guys that were on the, entering into contract years, but they're still part of the window. They're still in the,

00;33;33;15 - 00;33;39;08

Woody Paige

So do you think the Patriots have any chance against the the Seahawks?

00;33;39;11 - 00;33;46;13

Tom Green

I like their coaching staff a lot. And I think they'll coach them into a position that that they'll have a chance.

00;33;46;16 - 00;33;46;29

Woody Paige

I forgot.

00;33;47;03 - 00;33;47;16

Tom Green

Because.

00;33;47;19 - 00;33;53;06

Woody Paige

I forgot to blame Josh McDaniels. Oh yeah. You know don't come back and do this to the box.

00;33;53;10 - 00;33;56;24

Tom Green

Well he came back I thought he hung three points on the Broncos.

00;33;56;24 - 00;34;08;06

Ron Zappolo

Tom makes a good point. Mike Vrabel he's the coach of the year. There's not a team in the NFL that plays in the style of their coach. More than the New England.

00;34;08;06 - 00;34;10;20

Tom Green

He's a galvanized even if it's not X's and O's.

00;34;10;20 - 00;34;31;11

Ron Zappolo

He's a doesn't have to be X's and O's. He's old school. You know he's going to go in. He's going to have his team prepared and physically yeah ready to play. And at some point when you take over a four and 13 team and you go to the Super Bowl, you got to give him some credit. All right?

00;34;31;14 - 00;34;42;21

Ron Zappolo

He has coached his ass off. And I love what he said after the game. Hey fellas, go out and celebrate tonight. The bus leaves at eight tomorrow morning. You ain't on it. You're not going to play.

00;34;42;23 - 00;34;49;10

Tom Green

So they stunk under Belichick in his last year. They stunk under Jerod Mayo in his one disastrous year.

00;34;49;10 - 00;34;50;12

Ron Zappolo

And how were they this year.

00;34;50;12 - 00;35;07;14

Tom Green

And then that guy shows up. And when you're hiring coaches as people are this offseason, all you gotta do is look over there or look at the University of Indiana and look and say, if you get it wrong, it won't mean a damn, you won't go anywhere. But if you get it right, you can get it right and go deep.

00;35;07;14 - 00;35;18;26

Ron Zappolo

But to answer Woody's question, I agree with you. I think because of their coaching staff, because of him and McDaniels, I think they can keep it a game. I don't think they can beat Seattle.

00;35;18;28 - 00;35;27;11

Woody Paige

And I liked his final words because I'm thinking, imagine looking at the Patriots coming out of the hotel the next morning.

00;35;27;13 - 00;35;28;11

Speaker 2

Yeah.

00;35;28;14 - 00;35;29;09

Ron Zappolo

And there was.

00;35;29;15 - 00;35;32;04

Woody Paige

There was a famous movie about a fraternity house.

00;35;32;06 - 00;35;36;12

Speaker 2

Yes. Yeah. And I remember.

00;35;36;14 - 00;35;41;01

Woody Paige

Seeing those guys after the toga party. Yeah, yeah, that's what I kind of feel like.

00;35;41;03 - 00;35;42;18

Ron Zappolo

That's what they tend to look like.

00;35;42;18 - 00;35;44;06

Tom Green

Especially when the next week off.

00;35;44;12 - 00;35;47;19

Speaker 2

Oh, could be a long trip. Yeah.

00;35;47;21 - 00;36;10;25

Tom Green

Hey, I want to tell you about our friends at home financing. Let's be honest, the math lately, it's just not adding up between the grocery store and skyrocketing insurance premiums. Even people with a steady job. Well, more families are being forced to rely on high interest credit cards to cover expenses. If you're a homeowner caught in that cycle and you're carrying balances with interest rates in the 20s or even 30s, now is the time to get relief.

00;36;10;25 - 00;36;34;09

Tom Green

Right now, mortgage rates are at a three year low, and our friends at American Financing are helping homeowners pay off that high interest debt at rates in the low fives. Their salary based mortgage consultants don't just push loans, they try to build exit strategies from debt. On average, they're saving customers $800 a month. And if you start today, you might even be able to delay two mortgage payments.

00;36;34;11 - 00;36;53;24

Tom Green

This is all without upfront fees or obligations. To find out how much you can save. Colorado's home for home loans is American financing. Call 8555815828855581 5828 or visit American Financing dot net slash green.

00;36;53;26 - 00;36;59;11

Woody Paige

Be sure to watch. Tom green. He's appearing all over Denver stations.

00;36;59;14 - 00;37;07;26

Ron Zappolo

Yes he is. Well, I was lying in bed the other night and here was our set, popping up on one of Denver's stations. And there he was.

00;37;07;28 - 00;37;10;08

Woody Paige

A couple of other Broncos.

00;37;10;08 - 00;37;10;20

Tom Green

Sure.

00;37;10;23 - 00;37;17;02

Woody Paige

NFL issues. Do you think it. Oh, people always say, well, this is the this is the matchup that the.

00;37;17;02 - 00;37;18;23

Tom Green

NFL, the NFL wanted.

00;37;18;26 - 00;37;19;04

Speaker 2

Wants.

00;37;19;10 - 00;37;20;12

Woody Paige

Is this.

00;37;20;14 - 00;37;20;25

Ron Zappolo

No.

00;37;20;25 - 00;37;30;15

Woody Paige

What would be the NFL's or hours? What would be your choice. Take the Broncos out of the equation.

00;37;30;17 - 00;37;35;16

Woody Paige

What teams did the NFL really want to be in the Super Bowl?

00;37;35;20 - 00;37;43;17

Tom Green

Oh, I would think just because if you're really looking at conspiracy theory like the NFL gets to make it a Jets, Giants would be one, you know are bears.

00;37;43;17 - 00;37;44;26

Woody Paige

Not Jets.

00;37;44;28 - 00;37;50;27

Ron Zappolo

About Rams bears. Yeah. Something like that a giant markets but the NFL.

00;37;50;27 - 00;37;54;13

Woody Paige

Well that'd be difficult though because you have the would.

00;37;54;16 - 00;37;55;08

Tom Green

Then you know it was.

00;37;55;08 - 00;37;56;05

Ron Zappolo

Fixed. Yeah.

00;37;56;08 - 00;37;57;13

Speaker 2

But they have.

00;37;57;13 - 00;37;59;00

Ron Zappolo

So big that they don't care.

00;37;59;03 - 00;38;16;12

Tom Green

But you mentioned that because people are saying that the NFL, the Super Bowl was played in Seattle on Sunday, that that was the best matchup you're going to see of top flight teams was was the Rams and the Seahawks. And you look at the three games they played this year I mean they ended up this far apart in everything.

00;38;16;15 - 00;38;17;13

Tom Green

And you see.

00;38;17;15 - 00;38;26;29

Ron Zappolo

Sean McVay getting these same criticism goal thing that Sean Payton is for because I'm watching the game and I'm thinking what would I do there.

00;38;27;01 - 00;38;27;24

Tom Green

I was a tough call.

00;38;27;25 - 00;38;33;04

Ron Zappolo

It was a tough call because if you kick the field goal there's a chance you might never get the.

00;38;33;04 - 00;38;36;04

Tom Green

Ball back or they go kick a field goal, but you got.

00;38;36;04 - 00;38;37;03

Woody Paige

Two three timeouts.

00;38;37;03 - 00;38;45;23

Ron Zappolo

Left. You do have three timeouts. But here's the deal. I don't think he trusted his defense all year. His defense sucked. They scored 27 points and they lost.

00;38;45;23 - 00;38;47;18

Woody Paige

Their game over three minutes left though.

00;38;47;25 - 00;38;49;21

Ron Zappolo

Well there was like 4.5 minutes.

00;38;49;21 - 00;39;08;06

Tom Green

So here's the thing though. I think about his defense. His defense at times was very good this year. But you talk about the Broncos. You talk about the Patriots and you talk about those teams that you build up all those stats and highlights. Because half the time you're playing teams that can't play with you. That's true. And then all of a sudden you get Seattle in Seattle.

00;39;08;06 - 00;39;15;28

Ron Zappolo

And it's hey speaking of Seattle. Has Sam Darnold extinguished all the ghosts. Now can we no longer say.

00;39;15;28 - 00;39;18;05

Tom Green

That unless he unless he flails.

00;39;18;05 - 00;39;19;23

Ron Zappolo

So if he flails in the Super.

00;39;19;23 - 00;39;20;11

Tom Green

Bowl then.

00;39;20;11 - 00;39;21;26

Ron Zappolo

It's back to he sucks.

00;39;21;26 - 00;39;25;05

Tom Green

Well Minnesota was smart. They didn't sign him and they went with J.J. McCarthy.

00;39;25;05 - 00;39;26;02

Ron Zappolo

Yeah that was a good move.

00;39;26;02 - 00;39;26;11

Tom Green

That was.

00;39;26;11 - 00;39;30;28

Ron Zappolo

Pretty solid. Oh how about Seattle getting rid of Geno Smith. Yeah we'll take Smith who was.

00;39;30;28 - 00;39;35;07

Woody Paige

Maybe the worst quarterback in a Super Bowl trade deal for.

00;39;35;10 - 00;39;36;02

Ron Zappolo

Dilfer.

00;39;36;05 - 00;39;36;16

Woody Paige

Okay.

00;39;36;16 - 00;39;37;18

Tom Green

David Woodley and.

00;39;37;21 - 00;39;38;17

Ron Zappolo

Brad Johnson.

00;39;38;17 - 00;39;42;15

Woody Paige

Did he come back. But did Dilfer come back and have an incredible career after that.

00;39;42;15 - 00;39;43;03

Ron Zappolo

No. No.

00;39;43;04 - 00;40;04;14

Woody Paige

So to sit here and say that Sam Darnold is now proven that he's going to be a future Hall of Famer. No don't think that's guys I'm gonna give you an answer. Of my own question though I would think the NFL would have wanted one of two Super Bowls San Francisco not San Francisco Rams.

00;40;04;14 - 00;40;04;28

Tom Green

Okay.

00;40;04;28 - 00;40;14;00

Woody Paige

Versus the bills I think that would have been it. Sure sure I got a better one though. Rams versus the Chargers.

00;40;14;02 - 00;40;14;20

Tom Green

Oh yeah that.

00;40;14;20 - 00;40;15;22

Ron Zappolo

Would have been good to.

00;40;15;24 - 00;40;17;00

Speaker 2

So that would have been good.

00;40;17;04 - 00;40;22;20

Woody Paige

We've never had that happen. No that would have been the excitement around Los Angeles.

00;40;22;20 - 00;40;23;06

Ron Zappolo

Yeah.

00;40;23;08 - 00;40;24;20

Tom Green

When you talk about Seattle.

00;40;24;20 - 00;40;27;19

Woody Paige

And Super Bowl anyway that's what I think the NFL.

00;40;27;19 - 00;40;28;06

Ron Zappolo

I think.

00;40;28;08 - 00;40;31;02

Woody Paige

They saying loved the meeting at the bills today as they do.

00;40;31;02 - 00;40;33;09

Ron Zappolo

And Josh Allen against Matt Stafford.

00;40;33;11 - 00;40;47;25

Tom Green

But if when you talk about the Patriots having a chance in the Super Bowl there's there is one element that's in their favor. Seattle is two different teams. When they're at home they're a behemoth. They're on the road. They're a very good team. But they are different.

00;40;47;26 - 00;40;50;15

Woody Paige

Well that's about as close as they get to being right.

00;40;50;15 - 00;40;51;02

Tom Green

But it's not.

00;40;51;04 - 00;40;52;06

Woody Paige

It was down the road.

00;40;52;06 - 00;40;53;26

Speaker 2

Oh you know it's not a long term.

00;40;53;28 - 00;40;57;28

Tom Green

Super Bowl like a half. The crowd there doesn't care. Half the crowd there.

00;40;58;00 - 00;41;03;06

Ron Zappolo

People that have been gone don't understand how how antiseptic the Super Bowl there.

00;41;03;09 - 00;41;06;03

Tom Green

Pro guys from Chevron and the guys from Kodak. No one.

00;41;06;03 - 00;41;06;27

Ron Zappolo

Cares.

00;41;06;29 - 00;41;09;05

Tom Green

I don't care about the game. I just want to say I was here. I just.

00;41;09;05 - 00;41;09;14

Ron Zappolo

Want to.

00;41;09;18 - 00;41;32;07

Woody Paige

Give you an old, thing that happened to me. I had a publisher of the Denver Post at one point come to me and say he grew up in Wisconsin. Some people know who I'm talking about. Packers fan, Broncos fan. And he comes to me before the Super Bowl and says, I need 50 tickets. And I said, how about meeting the Pope?

00;41;32;09 - 00;41;34;01

Speaker 2

50. Good. 1 or 2. Yeah.

00;41;34;04 - 00;41;36;08

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, it's 50 are funny. You know.

00;41;36;10 - 00;41;59;26

Woody Paige

So not only what you're talking about, but of those 50 tickets, there were about 40 guys that were car dealers. Yeah. Who didn't care about anything. So to back up what you're saying, having been there, you look over there where the normally the band would be sitting, right, you know, at a college game and and there's 150 guys from Gillette.

00;42;00;02 - 00;42;01;09

Speaker 2

Yeah, exactly.

00;42;01;09 - 00;42;04;05

Tom Green

Well, there also be a lot of Bad Bunny fans who also.

00;42;04;05 - 00;42;21;18

Ron Zappolo

But it's facing about people, though I remember when I was working, guys would say, hey, the NCAA tournament is coming to town. Could you get me eight tickets? Yeah, sure. How many do you want to just go? Let me ask you both you guys a question I read yesterday and I wanted to ask your opinions. I think I read it on Pro Football Talk.

00;42;21;20 - 00;42;46;22

Ron Zappolo

And I do go on there once in a while. And they wrote about the Denver game and they said, listen, there's been a move afoot. It's been batted down over the years that the conference championship games should be played in neutral sites so that we get away from what we had in Denver, where the elements had more to do with the game than anything else.

00;42;46;25 - 00;42;47;21

Tom Green

That'd be a shame.

00;42;47;29 - 00;42;51;09

Ron Zappolo

I don't know how you could do that, but I have heard that before.

00;42;51;09 - 00;42;55;15

Tom Green

Yeah. I mean, you could I could see them making it into a destination thing, but.

00;42;55;18 - 00;42;55;29

Speaker 2

You know.

00;42;55;29 - 00;43;20;28

Woody Paige

Throw the NCAA playoffs into it, both in basketball. Yeah. A first round of NCAA basketball games you go to. And yeah, the stands are empty and they're even more empty when the two teams that you want to see play, you leave it and you don't drink. And we saw and now that the football playoffs going on, they're playing in places where there.

00;43;21;00 - 00;43;34;10

Tom Green

But the NFL is different. And if they if they say say that we're going to play the game at the stadium and then secondary ticket market, all that stuff, they, they they end up filling the place. And again, it would also be the guys from Gillette and the guys.

00;43;34;12 - 00;43;35;23

Woody Paige

Play all year, I think.

00;43;35;25 - 00;43;46;01

Ron Zappolo

To get a home field advantage. Right. Yeah, that's what I think. Plus I think two things television. The ratings are always high. Yeah, for bad weather games.

00;43;46;03 - 00;43;46;24

Woody Paige

And you can't.

00;43;46;24 - 00;43;54;21

Ron Zappolo

Tell fanbases, hey, come all year. But when we get to the penultimate game it's going to be in Sandy Jerry world.

00;43;54;21 - 00;43;56;02

Speaker 2

Yeah. I don't think you.

00;43;56;02 - 00;44;11;08

Woody Paige

Can do suggestions over the years that have been laughed and scoffed at and may run out of town as a result of was one that every NCAA Division one basketball team should be in in the playoff tournament, Bob Knight called me.

00;44;11;11 - 00;44;12;26

Tom Green

The math on it isn't that bad.

00;44;12;26 - 00;44;21;12

Woody Paige

Yeah, yeah, it's only one more week. But my other one was that the World Series be played in the daytime. Boys in Hawaii?

00;44;21;13 - 00;44;23;18

Speaker 2

Oh well, in Hawaii.

00;44;23;21 - 00;44;24;11

Ron Zappolo

That's.

00;44;24;13 - 00;44;25;06

Woody Paige

Because of.

00;44;25;09 - 00;44;26;10

Ron Zappolo

Had daytime.

00;44;26;10 - 00;44;28;23

Tom Green

Though. I love the day. I remember the daytime World Series.

00;44;28;23 - 00;44;29;09

Ron Zappolo

We all do.

00;44;29;12 - 00;44;36;05

Woody Paige

You could do that. Yeah. You play the World Series in Hawaii. It comes on at 8:00 in.

00;44;36;07 - 00;44;37;09

Speaker 2

Yeah, yeah.

00;44;37;09 - 00;44;48;21

Woody Paige

Wait a second, though, you kind of fill up the stadium. Both, city of Hawaii. Let's say it's L.A. and and the Chicago White Sox. People are going to go to Hawaii.

00;44;48;23 - 00;44;50;04

Tom Green

Oh, they don't have a watch this.

00;44;50;04 - 00;44;52;14

Woody Paige

They don't really have a good baseball stadium.

00;44;52;14 - 00;44;56;18

Ron Zappolo

Now, but it's the same, I think. You can't take that away.

00;44;56;19 - 00;44;57;09

Tom Green

The people.

00;44;57;10 - 00;44;59;03

Speaker 2

The Yankee Stadium and those.

00;44;59;03 - 00;45;00;23

Tom Green

People went for anyone.

00;45;00;23 - 00;45;03;04

Woody Paige

Who said, I said I was almost right.

00;45;03;07 - 00;45;04;07

Speaker 2

Yeah. Yeah.

00;45;04;09 - 00;45;06;24

Woody Paige

As Oprah would say by over an hour. But since.

00;45;06;24 - 00;45;07;11

Tom Green

We're on baseball.

00;45;07;12 - 00;45;19;01

Woody Paige

Say to me, he would look at me. He said, you know what? Those ideas would he grab yourself a flag and as you're leaving town, act like a you're leading a parade.

00;45;19;01 - 00;45;19;17

Speaker 2

You're.

00;45;19;17 - 00;45;20;10

Tom Green

Being run. And we.

00;45;20;10 - 00;45;22;04

Ron Zappolo

Could tell our stories for the next.

00;45;22;04 - 00;45;43;04

Tom Green

Hour. So the, the baseball coming up now, at least in Colorado, because the football season's over. The Rockies pitchers and catchers, I'm told, are reporting. So that's good. So they'll have someone to stop the ball. But, we also found out this week at Rockies Fan Fest that they're going to be adding statues at fields. Yeah, it was big Fan Fest weekend.

00;45;43;07 - 00;45;55;20

Tom Green

Oh, with the Broncos in the AFC Championship game that ran under the radar a little bit, but that's just for Todd Helton and Larry Walker will be, set up or they'll be.

00;45;55;20 - 00;45;59;23

Ron Zappolo

Like the monuments at Yankee Stadium. They're going to be actually in the they'll.

00;45;59;23 - 00;45;59;27

Tom Green

Be.

00;46;00;06 - 00;46;05;05

Woody Paige

Able to play they they have a they have a just a generic player outside.

00;46;05;12 - 00;46;05;19

Speaker 2

Yeah.

00;46;05;20 - 00;46;06;18

Woody Paige

Yeah they do.

00;46;06;20 - 00;46;07;20

Tom Green

Behind home plate. Yeah.

00;46;07;20 - 00;46;18;16

Woody Paige

Home plate didn't I've always thought that was bad. But I'm more concerned than that. I think it's a good idea. They didn't recognize players and they were always waiting for Todd Helton.

00;46;18;17 - 00;46;19;08

Tom Green

Right to.

00;46;19;08 - 00;46;48;03

Woody Paige

Retire. And I felt like, you know, you could do more than just have 42 on the wall out there. But what disturbs me, given everything, well, I was surprised that the San Diego Padres hired Bill Schmidt to be a top scout for them. Yeah. This leads me into my point. I'm reading the top 100, top 100 major league prospects going into this season.

00;46;48;06 - 00;46;49;22

Woody Paige

How many do you think the Rockies have?

00;46;49;22 - 00;46;51;00

Tom Green

And I'm afraid to guess.

00;46;51;00 - 00;46;53;05

Ron Zappolo

I can't answer because I. I read the same.

00;46;53;06 - 00;46;58;23

Tom Green

I'm going to say, oh, I ordered two to.

00;46;58;26 - 00;47;00;29

Woody Paige

Was one half of what you just.

00;47;00;29 - 00;47;02;06

Speaker 2

Yes I would.

00;47;02;08 - 00;47;03;05

Tom Green

I was one.

00;47;03;05 - 00;47;03;21

Ron Zappolo

Ethan.

00;47;03;21 - 00;47;08;06

Woody Paige

Holiday. Oh yeah. That's 66 at 66.

00;47;08;06 - 00;47;08;17

Ron Zappolo

And he's.

00;47;08;17 - 00;47;10;07

Woody Paige

60 only.

00;47;10;09 - 00;47;12;07

Ron Zappolo

Only in there because of the lineage.

00;47;12;07 - 00;47;26;15

Tom Green

Not really. So if you're the if you're the worst team in baseball, usually you look down the pipeline and you see, oh it's going to be here. Give me a year or two. It's coming. And they don't have that. That's but let's do the statues real quick because obviously these are the two good players.

00;47;26;15 - 00;47;26;22

Speaker 2

Todd.

00;47;26;22 - 00;47;28;08

Ron Zappolo

Helton and Larry Walker, the two best.

00;47;28;08 - 00;47;42;04

Tom Green

Players. Yeah. So August and September they're going to do that. And I just you know they make these announcements in with the Rockies. You always have to try to understand what they're doing. It seems like maybe they're having a tough time selling some of their season ticket.

00;47;42;04 - 00;47;43;15

Ron Zappolo

Packages and wonder.

00;47;43;17 - 00;48;08;23

Woody Paige

Last year. And I have someone and they have to report it to the treasurer's office. Yeah, no I'm not. I don't have a, some sort of source close to the city treasurer, but I have someone that knows what's going on, and he said it's down less than 15,000, season season tickets. They have all these packages where you could pick four games, right?

00;48;08;23 - 00;48;28;25

Woody Paige

Eight games, and you can't add them in. But people who buy actually, 81 game season that it that it's they're doing whatever they, you know Christian night where you know they bring in Christian bands and it's kind of funny that they have Christian Night, but they don't involve anybody that's Jewish or.

00;48;28;27 - 00;48;29;28

Speaker 2

Right.

00;48;30;00 - 00;48;32;13

Ron Zappolo

They shouldn't be. They should be taking on all comers.

00;48;32;19 - 00;48;33;29

Speaker 2

Yeah. I just I just.

00;48;33;29 - 00;48;38;10

Woody Paige

Find that a bit odd. But they'll probably add six more Sagittarius night.

00;48;38;10 - 00;48;39;12

Speaker 2

That's going to be a big one.

00;48;39;16 - 00;48;41;06

Ron Zappolo

Oh, Capricorn.

00;48;41;08 - 00;48;49;06

Woody Paige

They'll have more fun with the lights and stuff like that. But I just, this this smells.

00;48;49;06 - 00;48;50;10

Ron Zappolo

It does.

00;48;50;13 - 00;48;57;25

Tom Green

So is they're going to go down there and report they have Ethan Holiday in the pipeline, and they've got.

00;48;57;27 - 00;49;02;12

Woody Paige

Your second choice. I found Hollander. Is it, doll?

00;49;02;14 - 00;49;06;18

Tom Green

The picture. Jason I don't know if he would count as a prospect, because he may.

00;49;06;18 - 00;49;08;00

Ron Zappolo

Because he may not have,

00;49;08;02 - 00;49;08;19

Tom Green

Pitched enough in.

00;49;08;19 - 00;49;11;17

Ron Zappolo

The. But, yeah, he may still be an official prospect.

00;49;11;17 - 00;49;12;24

Woody Paige

I thought he would have, at least.

00;49;12;29 - 00;49;17;26

Tom Green

But, they did sign, Willy Castro.

00;49;17;28 - 00;49;21;07

Ron Zappolo

Are we serious here, or can we move on to the Avs and the nuggets?

00;49;21;10 - 00;49;22;25

Woody Paige

Well, he was in the All-Star game.

00;49;22;25 - 00;49;24;25

Ron Zappolo

Can we move on to the can we move on to.

00;49;24;25 - 00;49;28;07

Tom Green

He's an infielder outfielder. He's an importer exporter.

00;49;28;09 - 00;49;34;01

Speaker 2

Well let's talk and I tell you about Joe Goldman story.

00;49;34;04 - 00;49;37;14

Ron Zappolo

Can we talk about Nathan MacKinnon.

00;49;37;16 - 00;49;53;12

Woody Paige

Who played for the Memphis team? I did I said, you have family? Said, yeah, back in new Jersey. Who? He said, my brother. I said, what business? An import export. Oh, in new Jersey. What is the import export? He said drugs.

00;49;53;15 - 00;49;56;09

Speaker 2

Does he say Ron?

00;49;56;10 - 00;50;00;04

Woody Paige

He did it till last week. And then they arrested him. But.

00;50;00;07 - 00;50;04;20

Ron Zappolo

I think we talk about if you could just coming back too early or. Here we go. Can we do.

00;50;04;23 - 00;50;19;01

Woody Paige

Totally lot people? Actually, it's only about spring training. They have they have not signed a top free agent. They've found guys that to buy contracts they have not made. I could also also be talking about the Red Sox, the.

00;50;19;01 - 00;50;22;12

Ron Zappolo

All the Red Sox actually did go out and signed free agents. And now it's just the.

00;50;22;12 - 00;50;30;09

Woody Paige

Rock signed a big time free agent. That that would have been something if you had come out for the statues. I'm all for. I like Larry.

00;50;30;09 - 00;50;33;00

Tom Green

You're both like that to both deserving.

00;50;33;03 - 00;50;49;07

Woody Paige

I know when times go over friends. But, well, I'm not friends I would have liked just once. Maybe they still have a month to do this. Go sign one of those free agents. Well, first baseman, there's a guy that used to play for Arizona.

00;50;49;10 - 00;50;51;12

Speaker 2

So there's Framber.

00;50;51;12 - 00;50;58;21

Ron Zappolo

Valdez is still out there. Eugenio Suarez, the guy with 15 homeruns last year, was still out.

00;50;58;21 - 00;51;01;14

Woody Paige

There. Instead of a fan fest instead of test, you go.

00;51;01;14 - 00;51;01;27

Ron Zappolo

Sign one.

00;51;01;27 - 00;51;18;00

Woody Paige

Of those, announce we got two announcements today. If I own the world and I was in charge of the team, we have two announcements for today. We have just signed a future Hall of Famer that played first base for the Cardinals, played the first base for the Diamondbacks. He played first base last year for the Yankees.

00;51;18;07 - 00;51;18;29

Ron Zappolo

Paul Goldschmidt.

00;51;18;29 - 00;51;28;01

Woody Paige

Yeah, we just saw the future Hall of Famer could finish his career here and we got rid of Chris Bright. Thank you very much. No questions.

00;51;28;01 - 00;51;34;25

Tom Green

They do have to do that. They have to do what the angels did with Rendon. They have to go. We're going to make a deal.

00;51;34;25 - 00;51;38;19

Woody Paige

What are you waiting on? That would be the biggest offseason announcement, fellas.

00;51;38;19 - 00;51;39;19

Ron Zappolo

Nobody cares.

00;51;39;19 - 00;51;42;24

Tom Green

Oh, but they you know why they have to do it. There is. He's sitting down there.

00;51;42;26 - 00;52;11;01

Ron Zappolo

Listen, nobody goes to the games. Nobody cares about the results of the games. I guarantee you their TV ratings are abysmal. Made. The major leagues have to make a deal to put them. No one cares in Denver anymore. It's up to them to make people care. That's not for us to drum up interest. It's up to them to excite us to go to the ballpark.

00;52;11;04 - 00;52;12;01

Ron Zappolo

Period. And that's.

00;52;12;01 - 00;52;13;01

Tom Green

What's amazing, is that they.

00;52;13;01 - 00;52;14;29

Woody Paige

Have all gone to you. Okay.

00;52;15;01 - 00;52;15;28

Tom Green

So I want to ask you about.

00;52;16;00 - 00;52;20;11

Ron Zappolo

Somebody who's actually trying to win, but who actually gives a damn.

00;52;20;13 - 00;52;27;05

Tom Green

What about the nuggets, though? In this realm, as we sit here, they have nine games left before the All-Star break.

00;52;27;05 - 00;52;27;26

Ron Zappolo

Okay.

00;52;27;29 - 00;52;31;29

Tom Green

It sounds like we're going to see Jokic before the All-Star break, if not in the very.

00;52;31;29 - 00;52;33;22

Ron Zappolo

Near it may seem in the near future.

00;52;33;22 - 00;52;53;29

Tom Green

But also looming before that is the trade deadline. Yes. And the nuggets are thought of as a very passive. If you look at the NBA you know who's going to make a deal and who isn't. They look passive. But this has been such an interesting first half of their season where they've suddenly given value to the Zeke energies and Jalen Pickett to the world.

00;52;53;29 - 00;52;59;02

Tom Green

And you know Payton Watson's going to be a problem contractually. But Johnson.

00;52;59;02 - 00;53;02;23

Ron Zappolo

Payton Watson is one of the best stories in the NBA.

00;53;02;23 - 00;53;12;13

Tom Green

Right. But does this does this add to the nuggets likelihood of making a deal in that they now have assets that probably were worth nothing on the market?

00;53;12;13 - 00;53;28;10

Ron Zappolo

I don't know, I don't think it does. I think you make a good point. But I think the nuggets feel and I'm speculating here, okay, that they're the deepest team in the NBA and that the injuries to so many frontline players have proven to them what kind of depth they.

00;53;28;10 - 00;53;28;28

Tom Green

Got guys.

00;53;28;28 - 00;53;54;18

Ron Zappolo

And we got guys. And when it really gets to be serious, we can call on Zeke Naji. We can call on Jalen Pickett. We can get some answers from people that we didn't think we could get. And they're better than anybody we could bring in, save for some gigantic seismic trade, which I don't think they're going to do because they think they like their roster.

00;53;54;20 - 00;54;04;28

Woody Paige

I'm laughing because do you know what the second most notable player who was in the trade market, number one, is.

00;54;05;00 - 00;54;05;19

Tom Green

And PJ.

00;54;05;24 - 00;54;08;21

Ron Zappolo

Yanez is number one, Michael Porter junior,

00;54;08;23 - 00;54;09;29

Woody Paige

Trading for Michael Porter.

00;54;09;29 - 00;54;26;07

Ron Zappolo

You know the thing with Michael Porter Junior because again I watched him the other night and I watch a lot of NBA. He's on a bad team. Somebody has to score on a bad team. And if you're going to go out and give up a lot for Michael Porter Jr, beware of yeah what you're going to get.

00;54;26;10 - 00;54;27;23

Tom Green

He looks good on the stat sheet.

00;54;27;24 - 00;54;35;20

Woody Paige

He looks real good. And I think they're going to make a trade for one reason Jones has a two way contract.

00;54;35;20 - 00;54;37;04

Tom Green

And he's complaining at a room.

00;54;37;04 - 00;54;45;04

Woody Paige

They got to do something to get him off the two way contract where they got to trade one of those guys. Strong author maybe.

00;54;45;04 - 00;54;48;20

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. But if they do that would he? Those aren't those aren't big moves. So that's.

00;54;48;20 - 00;54;51;10

Tom Green

Why I think yeah, here's the mystery man I Jones.

00;54;51;10 - 00;54;59;04

Woody Paige

Has been a, he's not a secret, but he's been a he's been good clean up on now five kind of guy should.

00;54;59;06 - 00;54;59;22

Ron Zappolo

Yeah I agree.

00;54;59;22 - 00;55;01;25

Tom Green

He's a better player than a two way contract.

00;55;01;25 - 00;55;04;08

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. He's a better player than what they thought they had. Yeah.

00;55;04;09 - 00;55;16;23

Tom Green

Here's the mystery man Cam Johnson because he had just started to fit in and find his way. And they gave up a lot for him. And they're paying him a lot. But I don't know that he's nugget yet so.

00;55;16;23 - 00;55;20;10

Woody Paige

And you but before he got hurt he became right. He was no good.

00;55;20;11 - 00;55;28;11

Tom Green

He was doing it. But I'm looking at Peyton Watson. And that what you're going to do with your money and what you're going to do with cam Johnson.

00;55;28;13 - 00;55;34;12

Ron Zappolo

It's also going to be interesting when Cam Johnson does come back. Do you start Cam Johnson or do you start.

00;55;34;14 - 00;55;36;04

Tom Green

Yeah, I'm not so sure.

00;55;36;06 - 00;55;49;05

Woody Paige

It's going to be gone at the end of the year. He he idolized the famous story. He idolized Durant. Rent took him under his arm. He wants to go be Michael Porter. Sure. Somewhere he wants to be the guy.

00;55;49;06 - 00;55;51;03

Ron Zappolo

But for now, somewhere. But for this year.

00;55;51;03 - 00;56;00;08

Woody Paige

So you keep him. You got to keep him. And he got to keep them. You make some minor deal where you. So you can sign Jones, but you're Watson's.

00;56;00;08 - 00;56;05;14

Tom Green

God, if you want to win an NBA championship, the nuggets will need their starters.

00;56;05;16 - 00;56;06;25

Ron Zappolo

Oh, yeah, they got to be healthy.

00;56;06;25 - 00;56;17;16

Tom Green

But that makes me wonder because we saw Christian Brown come back and have to go back away. Aaron Gordon came back or or do we have the right people in place.

00;56;17;17 - 00;56;19;06

Ron Zappolo

Well that begs the question.

00;56;19;08 - 00;56;20;11

Tom Green

Nikola.

00;56;20;13 - 00;56;23;26

Ron Zappolo

Jokic come back or should they on the side of court.

00;56;23;26 - 00;56;32;09

Tom Green

Who's making those decisions. Who is rehabbing these guys. And I'm not I'm not blaming. But I'm saying you got to look at your track record and go, we're not doing it wrong.

00;56;32;16 - 00;56;59;01

Woody Paige

One of the famous basketball, media experts had a mid-season report on Most Valuable Player stuff. And picked as the executive of the year. Two guys. Yeah, with the nuggets. And I thought, that's right, that's right. They they did do what was supposed to be done. They strengthened the bench here and they were able to get rid of a big contract.

00;56;59;01 - 00;57;06;10

Woody Paige

And Michael Porter and they brought in somebody that was beginning to fit in. I thought he was worthless at the beginning of the year. He was not.

00;57;06;10 - 00;57;08;10

Tom Green

He couldn't shoot at all. Yeah, he's a shooter, but.

00;57;08;10 - 00;57;34;19

Woody Paige

I'll give you a, the other side of the joke thing. Are they, after what we've seen with both Christian Brown and with, Gordon Gordon, that they both came back prematurely? That. Do you hold him out? Or. Here's the other thing. You do is right before the All-Star game, you start him in 3 or 4 games, let him play, and he's eligible then for the most valuable player.

00;57;34;21 - 00;57;39;00

Woody Paige

And that sounds like a move that would be made with the 76 ers.

00;57;39;03 - 00;57;40;18

Speaker 2

Yeah that's right it does.

00;57;40;18 - 00;57;46;25

Woody Paige

But they can't even do that now because he's not any good. But I think well do you do that to squeeze him back into the MVP.

00;57;46;25 - 00;57;47;25

Tom Green

Booker wouldn't do it.

00;57;47;27 - 00;57;49;14

Ron Zappolo

You know what that's the good news.

00;57;49;17 - 00;57;56;20

Tom Green

He would go yeah. He don't care. I got MVP's, you know what they mean already. My kid climbs on them. You know, that's that's what we call it, though.

00;57;56;21 - 00;57;57;20

Speaker 2

Well, the.

00;57;57;23 - 00;58;05;06

Woody Paige

Most certain thing we have in talent, I think, is the the edge. Even though they have their moments where they just disappear.

00;58;05;07 - 00;58;10;10

Tom Green

We're down to two possible parades. The third parade went by the boards on Sunday.

00;58;10;12 - 00;58;12;03

Ron Zappolo

Down to two,

00;58;12;05 - 00;58;12;22

Tom Green

Down to two.

00;58;12;23 - 00;58;31;05

Ron Zappolo

Plus, I think I'm going to give the abs. I'm going to cut them a little bit of slack, because I think the whole league has this kind of malaise. Before they shut down. Totally. And I think guys heads are not in it in the abs of a couple of bad games, but I still think they're the cream of the board.

00;58;31;05 - 00;58;36;15

Ron Zappolo

The they're the best team. When it gets down to when it really counts, they'll show us how good they are.

00;58;36;15 - 00;58;52;25

Tom Green

It'll be interesting to see what they look like in the days when Landry starts to practice again and play again, because they've they've gone into that little malaise, as you put it, when when Landry went out and they seemed to flatten out, and they've got a cool schedule coming up and, you know, they're running it.

00;58;52;25 - 00;58;55;03

Woody Paige

Just can't get Olympic in and hurt the King.

00;58;55;06 - 00;58;56;15

Ron Zappolo

Or McCaw.

00;58;56;17 - 00;58;57;12

Woody Paige

Yes.

00;58;57;14 - 00;58;58;01

Speaker 2

Yeah.

00;58;58;04 - 00;59;01;04

Woody Paige

They can't go through what the nuggets have gone through.

00;59;01;05 - 00;59;36;20

Tom Green

With the Olympics coming up. It's been a very difficult week in America. World Cup is coming. The Olympics are coming. And the way the rest of the world views our country, the way we view our country, seems to change. Daily, weekly, monthly. There is there is concern that when it comes to international events in America, that the international community is not as interested in participating in major sporting events or may not be able to or want to participate in major sporting events here.

00;59;36;20 - 00;59;47;02

Tom Green

And it's going to be, I think, very interesting, very controversial. What does come, because everything does come with controversy these days.

00;59;47;04 - 00;59;59;25

Ron Zappolo

I agree. I think we're, we're tempting fate with the world. And as one American to another, I'm I'm distraught over what's happening. And I'm sure it is going to affect, the world of sports.

00;59;59;25 - 01;00;01;04

Tom Green

Including your friends. Candidate.

01;00;01;10 - 01;00;01;20

Ron Zappolo

Yes.

01;00;01;20 - 01;00;03;05

Tom Green

You know, our best friends.

01;00;03;05 - 01;00;23;26

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, our best allies. And you know, when when the leader of our country gets up and says, you know, NATO's never really done anything for us, and they showed up in a few wars, but they wrote the back. They were afraid to go in the front. And you see all these prime ministers of other countries talk about how many people they lost fighting in Iraq or fighting in Afghanistan.

01;00;23;29 - 01;00;33;14

Ron Zappolo

It doesn't make you proud to be an American. And I think that, sports will it it'll play out in the world of sports. The way it plays out in real life.

01;00;33;14 - 01;00;35;23

Tom Green

And what the temperature doesn't seem to ever go down.

01;00;35;25 - 01;00;52;17

Woody Paige

Germany is, threatening to boycott you. You've seen the return if you apply for ticket. That's one thing. Once you get it, you can't turn it back. I guess you could try and sell somebody 73,000 tickets.

01;00;52;17 - 01;00;54;02

Tom Green

This is World Cup, you know.

01;00;54;04 - 01;01;21;19

Woody Paige

For the World Cup, 73,000 tickets were applied for but were not paid for. So that's kind of what's going on in the world in regard to the World Cup. And the Olympics is going to be a situation where people are going to say, I don't want to go even in this country. But if you are a fan and you're in, let's say, Brazil and you like soccer, go back to work for a moment.

01;01;21;22 - 01;01;38;01

Woody Paige

Yeah. Why would I go to the United States? People are not coming to the United States anyway for the World Cup. They're going to go to Mexico when the games are in Mexico. That's where they're going for games. And there are enough soccer fans in this country that they'll fill stadiums for the for that.

01;01;38;01 - 01;01;38;27

Tom Green

But the teams too.

01;01;38;27 - 01;02;03;09

Woody Paige

Because if they don't get kicked out, they'll be able to go to the games, but they might be kicked out of the country, are afraid to go to a game because they might be, because I read the latest thing maybe an hour ago coming here in the lift that, ISIS going to be in charge of a lot of the security at these events.

01;02;03;09 - 01;02;03;21

Woody Paige

And you can't.

01;02;03;21 - 01;02;05;05

Ron Zappolo

Believe that.

01;02;05;07 - 01;02;07;07

Woody Paige

Really, with what.

01;02;07;10 - 01;02;12;12

Ron Zappolo

We learned, we learned by putting the Hells Angels at Altamont that there you go. Works out very.

01;02;12;12 - 01;02;36;24

Tom Green

Well. So the dream used to be that Olympics, the Olympics, the Olympiads would be apolitical. And in 1972, that changed in Munich. In 1980, it changed with the boycott of the Moscow Games. 84 the Russians didn't come to Los Angeles. And obviously the the politics are now thickly and strongly woven into almost everything you have to do with the Olympics.

01;02;36;26 - 01;02;56;03

Tom Green

So now you'll have athletes, which takes you back to John Carlos and Tommie Smith in Mexico City in 1968. But athletes will or won't participate. Athletes will make their own decisions, and in social media, it won't be done in silence. It'll be a very loud, global, examination. You know.

01;02;56;03 - 01;03;29;28

Ron Zappolo

We talked about this last week when George Karl was here, but again, playing no favorites, kind of proud of the NBA kind of proud of Chris Finch and Steve Kerr for what they said this weekend. Kind of proud of the NBA Players Association for putting out something that says we stand with people, in our community and I wish more sports organizations in general would would take more of a stand and get more involved in the communities in which they thrive and survive.

01;03;30;03 - 01;03;53;06

Woody Paige

Yeah, NFL did a bit putting, in the end zones and on the back of the helmets, in regard to doctor Martin Luther King Jr Day, I've been getting since last week. Stick to football, Woody. Well, can't stick to football. Football's over. I'm sorry. I have to move out. Hey.

01;03;53;08 - 01;03;54;22

Ron Zappolo

You're a human being. You live.

01;03;54;22 - 01;03;56;20

Woody Paige

You live in the. You know, I haven't gone to shut.

01;03;56;20 - 01;03;59;28

Tom Green

Up and dribble. Does doesn't wear as well.

01;04;00;02 - 01;04;23;22

Woody Paige

Not quite having gone to 14 Olympics, including one in Sarajevo. And I just want to mention this in passing. I won't make a long harangue out of it that was still under the thumb of the Soviet Union, and they brought in toothbrushes for the media. The week before, they didn't have toothbrushes in Sarajevo and Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia no longer exist.

01;04;23;25 - 01;04;24;18

Speaker 2

Yeah.

01;04;24;20 - 01;04;56;06

Woody Paige

All of the venues were destroyed. The country was destroyed as a result of civil unrest, military actions taken by different groups in the country, like what we have here. There were people that were opposed to each other, having watched that, having not gone to, Russia in 1980 because, our president said we're not going and that, wanted to go to Russia.

01;04;56;08 - 01;05;26;09

Woody Paige

But then I have been in Atlanta, down the block from a bombing that didn't turn out to be a terrorist act. It was by one person, and it scared the hell out of me. But the rest of the Atlantic Olympics, which we were, what, the 100 anniversary of the Olympics, I think in Atlanta. And having seen it over and over again through my travels to the Olympics, that I can't imagine how bad is going to get here.

01;05;26;12 - 01;05;55;13

Woody Paige

I foresee that when the national anthem is played for United States athletes or German athletes or Bolivia athletes, they're going to turn their heads and stare in a different direction or put their bow their heads in or not show up, just not. We have created with the two major, biggest, major events in the entire world. Forget about the World Series, forget about Super Bowl, we're talking about the World Cup.

01;05;55;15 - 01;06;29;01

Woody Paige

And the only people don't that in the Olympics. And they're going to be just not dignified. They're not going to be a world of love, a world of united. This of togetherness. It's going to be a stage of people showing their feelings about this country in a in a negative way. And what we're going to see is something that happened in the National Football League when a quarterback took a knee.

01;06;29;03 - 01;06;40;08

Woody Paige

Yeah, during the national anthem, we're going to see a that magnified by 25 times by other countries and by our own countries during these two events.

01;06;40;10 - 01;06;54;19

Tom Green

But you also, the contrast is because you alluded to it is that the the idea of the love or the unity that it's the highest ideals of the Olympics, those those are the Olympic moments that I think we all so fondly remember when it felt like the world was collecting.

01;06;54;19 - 01;06;56;07

Ron Zappolo

Is one that was a long time.

01;06;56;07 - 01;07;16;06

Tom Green

Ago. And, and it's there are still whiffs of that, but it has become fewer and further between. And then the other side of that, the politics now that is and it's more than politics. It's it's human, it's life. And it's everything that includes war and violence to be attached to everything that includes the Olympiad or the, the World Cup.

01;07;16;06 - 01;07;32;03

Woody Paige

And I would just like to add that I have it's in the making because I, I, have connections in Ireland. Yeah. Where they do the greatest bond glass in the world. And I'm going to present the two of you with the people.

01;07;32;05 - 01;07;34;13

Woody Paige

Alternative cups.

01;07;34;15 - 01;07;36;19

Ron Zappolo

Are these like, an award like.

01;07;36;19 - 01;07;38;08

Tom Green

Win or you don't have to win.

01;07;38;08 - 01;07;39;06

Ron Zappolo

Or you don't have to win it.

01;07;39;06 - 01;07;39;28

Speaker 2

You just.

01;07;40;00 - 01;07;40;22

Tom Green

Get it.

01;07;40;25 - 01;07;46;03

Ron Zappolo

There's just what you're doing there. Can I get a Nobel Peace Prize as well?

01;07;46;06 - 01;07;46;27

Speaker 2

Yeah.

01;07;46;29 - 01;07;48;15

Tom Green

The young lady for,

01;07;48;18 - 01;07;49;22

Woody Paige

Giving me a Swedish.

01;07;49;22 - 01;08;04;01

Tom Green

Soccer star turned down FIFA's award, into their their League of fame, their Hall of Fame because of that, that presentation. She's so like I said, it's it's inescapable. It's unavoidable. And it'll be louder than ever, as you say, like.

01;08;04;01 - 01;08;07;17

Woody Paige

Quite a protest. I'm going to give back my, ribbon that I.

01;08;07;20 - 01;08;08;08

Ron Zappolo

I won for.

01;08;08;08 - 01;08;09;15

Woody Paige

Being in the car world sports.

01;08;09;16 - 01;08;11;20

Speaker 2

All of that. Hey, before.

01;08;11;24 - 01;08;17;16

Woody Paige

No, keep that. You know, I'm going to give it to I don't know. Well, there's one person in the country that wants all.

01;08;17;18 - 01;08;20;26

Speaker 2

Yeah, medals. I'm not Woody.

01;08;20;26 - 01;08;27;01

Tom Green

Lean over because I want people to be able to read your board before we go. I always want to make sure people get a chance to look at, what? He's chalkboard.

01;08;27;01 - 01;08;29;23

Ron Zappolo

Why am I constantly getting the.

01;08;30;00 - 01;08;32;24

Tom Green

It's he's he aims these things. God. It's like.

01;08;32;28 - 01;08;34;05

Ron Zappolo

What am I, a pinata?

01;08;34;05 - 01;08;42;23

Tom Green

Oh, read it for our listeners. It says it's not my sensitive. I'm not responsible for my facial expressions when Ron talks, it would.

01;08;42;24 - 01;08;49;04

Woody Paige

Do you know the answer to the question you just gave? Why do you get all this shit back here? He gives me a ride home.

01;08;49;04 - 01;08;50;18

Ron Zappolo

But yeah, that's what it is.

01;08;50;18 - 01;08;51;27

Woody Paige

Have you ever offered to give.

01;08;51;27 - 01;08;55;22

Ron Zappolo

No. Nope. And I'm not giving you one today after that.

01;08;55;24 - 01;08;59;07

Woody Paige

But I'll put you on the bike.

01;08;59;10 - 01;09;12;09

Tom Green

Fellas. Thanks. Good times. We'll do it again. And, we appreciate all of you at home for joining us. You can always reach us at at Gorilla Sportsnet. Thanks again for joining us here on After the Horn.
