After the Horn

After the Horn Ep. 27 | Broncos Earn the Bye + Nuggets' Short-Handed Stunner

Episode Summary

The Broncos lock up the AFC’s top seed and a first-round bye, but the guys ask the real question: are they actually playing like a Super Bowl team? Tom Green, Woody Paige, and Ron Zappolo debate Denver’s uneven offense, Bo Nix’s recent struggles, Sean Payton’s play-calling, and which playoff matchup the Broncos should want—or fear—coming out of the wild-card round. They also examine whether this defense can still carry a postseason run the way the Super Bowl 50 unit once did. Plus, the Nuggets deliver one of the most improbable wins in franchise history in Philadelphia with a severely depleted lineup, sparking a deep conversation about bench development, playoff depth, and what Denver should expect during Nikola Jokic’s absence.

Episode Notes

The Broncos secure home-field advantage and a bye, but concerns linger about offensive execution, quarterback play, and whether Denver is peaking at the right time. The panel breaks down Bo Nix’s recent performances, Sean Payton’s role in his development, offensive line struggles, and which playoff opponents pose the biggest threat. Attention then shifts to the Nuggets after their remarkable overtime win in Philadelphia despite missing most of their rotation, highlighting the importance of depth, player development, and managing minutes heading into the stretch run without Nikola Jokic. The episode closes with reflections on coaching hires around the NFL, the state of late-season football, and what both Denver teams must prove as the postseason approaches.

00;00;39;29 - 00;00;42;15

Woody Paige

He and Chris Bryant played the same number of games.

00;00;42;15 - 00;00;45;11

Speaker 3

What you're just as effective. Hey, before.

00;00;45;11 - 00;00;49;10

Tom Green

We get started, Tom green with Ron Paul and Woody Page, we want to once again thank our.

00;00;49;10 - 00;00;58;10

Woody Paige

Fox. But for the stop again. Natasha is here, but she's not in the picture. Well, she can be introduced.

00;00;58;13 - 00;01;00;27

Tom Green

There she is. And and Natasha. What?

00;01;00;27 - 00;01;09;05

Woody Paige

Cause we got to give her accolades for winning a Golden Globe for her performance in wicked. For good.

00;01;09;08 - 00;01;09;24

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;01;09;27 - 00;01;13;24

Speaker 5

That came in looking like a movie star. First time that you haven't made fun of my outfit.

00;01;13;25 - 00;01;26;06

Tom Green

Fabulous, fabulous. Hey, I just wanted to thank again our friends from Furniture Row for our fine furniture. And there are a couple spots left from our our, hot ones contest that we still have to buff out, but the ninja napalm.

00;01;26;08 - 00;01;27;15

Ron Zappolo

Could have been worse. Yeah.

00;01;27;17 - 00;01;28;16

Speaker 3

It got to be.

00;01;28;18 - 00;01;30;15

Woody Paige

You could have gotten to number four.

00;01;30;18 - 00;01;31;21

Ron Zappolo

Well, yes.

00;01;31;24 - 00;01;41;26

Tom Green

Let's, let's let's start with the Broncos run. They got their number one seed. But did they did they intimidate anyone? Did they scare everyone?

00;01;41;29 - 00;01;43;18

Ron Zappolo

Only themselves?

00;01;43;21 - 00;01;46;12

Speaker 5

Yeah. The fans.

00;01;46;14 - 00;02;15;21

Ron Zappolo

Listen, they got the number one seed. You can pass this however you want. The Broncos and the Seahawks should be the favorites to go to the Super Bowl. It's the path is going to be easy. The question becomes and there are two of them. Can the Broncos raise the level of their play. Because they need to because they haven't played a, a a game that they can be proud of since green Bay.

00;02;15;24 - 00;02;27;29

Ron Zappolo

And number two, who will come in here in a couple weeks? I can tell you a couple teams that I'd rather not see like. Well, for one Houston, I think Houston's got a great chance to win the Super Bowl.

00;02;28;02 - 00;02;30;13

Tom Green

Now they did beat him in Houston. But that was a.

00;02;30;17 - 00;02;34;22

Ron Zappolo

That's the last time Houston lost. Yeah. And that was against Davis Mills.

00;02;34;22 - 00;02;35;18

Tom Green

Most of the way.

00;02;35;18 - 00;02;40;27

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. Well three quarters of the way. It's a little going to be a little different now.

00;02;40;29 - 00;02;43;04

Woody Paige

Oh I'm involved in this little bit.

00;02;43;07 - 00;02;43;11

Speaker 3

Hey.

00;02;43;11 - 00;02;45;18

Ron Zappolo

Oh why don't we knock yourself out.

00;02;45;19 - 00;02;56;20

Woody Paige

Oh my. My first all was Peyton Manning. When it got here, people would say he raises all boats. After watching that game, I watched Bo Nix is lowered old age.

00;02;56;22 - 00;03;21;21

Woody Paige

No, but I saw today that, according to ESPN and experts, that the the Broncos are the third favorites to win the Super Bowl behind the Rams and the Seahawks and the Rams. And the Seahawks are right there together. So that respect they were looking for, it sort of went down because of the performance on Sunday around the nation because people worry I got it.

00;03;21;21 - 00;03;59;02

Woody Paige

I've gotten into it with a lot of people on social media about, whether the Broncos can win the Super Bowl and two, who they should play after they have the bye. And I think that their boats were lowered because of their performance last weekend. But I also think that they are getting the respect that they're considered the number one team, not the number one seed, but they are the number one team in betting in the AFC.

00;03;59;03 - 00;04;18;20

Tom Green

I think people, though, are giving the Broncos most of that credit for. Nobody wants to go to Denver. Denver's a tough place to go and play. Denver is a tough place to go and win, and the Broncos have a lot to say about that. But it's also it's the same with Seattle. Seattle's a tough place to go win, a tough place in that home field advantage means a lot.

00;04;18;22 - 00;04;26;28

Tom Green

But if you were to rank those seven AFC teams as how they're playing right now, Broncos might be fifth or sixth in the way they're playing right now.

00;04;27;02 - 00;04;34;16

Woody Paige

Well, my point was on social media that I said they'd like to play the Chargers again I believe.

00;04;34;18 - 00;05;07;12

Woody Paige

They don't want to play the Texans. And people coming back say well they beat the Texans. That was a totally different team. And yeah different quarterback. That defense Texans ended up being number one defensively. The Broncos are number two. So you've got to be concerned about the Texans defense. But you also got to be concerned about a healthy quarterback that they have which he still wasn't at that point when they went down there and beat, the Texans I don't think that's the team that anybody in Denver would want to see here in the first game.

00;05;07;14 - 00;05;26;16

Woody Paige

You can say, which I did. I'd like to see the Chargers again because they still have offensive line problems. So they can't really rush the football defensively. It's a good team. But I've seen them beat the the and Padres I've seen the Padres.

00;05;26;16 - 00;05;26;25

Tom Green

They could.

00;05;26;25 - 00;05;28;00

Speaker 3

Handle

00;05;28;02 - 00;05;45;14

Woody Paige

You know they beat the Chargers on the way to the last Super Bowl ten years ago. And everybody says to me the Steelers is who you want to see. Well, I'm afraid of one guy for the Steelers that I think he's got a little something left in his tank.

00;05;45;16 - 00;05;50;05

Tom Green

Well, then he'll get DK Metcalf back too. Who had that two game suspension that almost cost.

00;05;50;05 - 00;05;51;19

Ron Zappolo

The Steelers was playoffs.

00;05;51;24 - 00;05;53;01

Woody Paige

So who do you want.

00;05;53;04 - 00;05;54;21

Ron Zappolo

Better come out real quick for.

00;05;54;21 - 00;06;00;25

Woody Paige

Aaron right from your vantage point, Tom. Who do you want to see the Broncos play if you're a Broncos fan.

00;06;00;25 - 00;06;20;03

Tom Green

I think it is Pittsburgh. Because I do think Buffalo I think the Chargers I think the Texans, all these other teams you know, have something going on. And you know, that's not how it's lining up. But I'm just saying I'd say the the seventh team in the AFC is who you want to play. The seventh best team in the AFC playoffs is the Steelers.

00;06;20;05 - 00;06;49;04

Ron Zappolo

And well it's actually the Ravens. But that's a different story. They found a way to lose. But you're right I would say this though Tom. There's the two hottest teams. I always look at who's hot control the playoffs who's rolling who got rolling in December and can kind of take that and take off. The two teams to me, that are playing the highest level of football of any teams in the NFL are the Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars, for sure.

00;06;49;04 - 00;06;56;14

Ron Zappolo

And those are the two teams. I think those two teams have a great shot to end up playing in the AFC Championship game here.

00;06;56;15 - 00;06;57;16

Tom Green

You think?

00;06;57;19 - 00;07;00;12

Ron Zappolo

Well, can if they want to play here they can would.

00;07;00;12 - 00;07;07;17

Woody Paige

Make what you guys have been around long enough to know that there was a championship game played in Denver that didn't involve a Denver team.

00;07;07;20 - 00;07;07;27

Speaker 3

That.

00;07;07;27 - 00;07;09;10

Woody Paige

Was in the United State football.

00;07;09;10 - 00;07;17;27

Tom Green

The first one was it Detroit? Philly and Detroit, I think, or Michigan. It was the Michigan Panthers and the Philadelphia Stars. And I think.

00;07;18;00 - 00;07;20;02

Ron Zappolo

You know, with the Ryan, can you name the quarterbacks?

00;07;20;02 - 00;07;26;01

Tom Green

I'm shocked if you seen a for Philadelphia and I don't know Anthony Carter played for them.

00;07;26;02 - 00;07;28;25

Woody Paige

Who was an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Stars.

00;07;28;28 - 00;07;29;18

Tom Green

The assistant.

00;07;29;18 - 00;07;30;02

Woody Paige

Coach I.

00;07;30;02 - 00;07;31;07

Ron Zappolo

Know this Victor.

00;07;31;07 - 00;07;32;07

Woody Paige

Trained you.

00;07;32;09 - 00;07;39;12

Ron Zappolo

I was reading about the new head coach at Michigan, Kyle Whittingham, who I remember is a linebacker for the Denver Gold.

00;07;39;12 - 00;07;45;29

Tom Green

There you go. Yeah. So it all comes, but it always does in all sports. It comes back to the USFL.

00;07;46;02 - 00;07;54;14

Ron Zappolo

And the USA. Hey there's one more point about the Broncos and we can debate this. Bo Nix has got to play better.

00;07;54;16 - 00;07;56;07

Tom Green

Yeah.

00;07;56;10 - 00;08;07;01

Ron Zappolo

You can pass it up any way you want. You you can't have performances like he's had the last few weeks and win against the Houston Texans then won't work.

00;08;07;02 - 00;08;13;10

Tom Green

I was listening this morning to mark Earth on the radio, and he may know more about offensive line play than than any of us. I think.

00;08;13;10 - 00;08;13;22

Ron Zappolo

He might.

00;08;13;22 - 00;08;33;29

Tom Green

Possible. But he went over the tape. He was doing his bit on the radio, talking about, the Broncos performance against the Chargers this past weekend and all the mistakes and all the details that he was pointing out. Sounded like a team. The mistakes a team would make in week two of a preseason did not sound like a week 18 team getting ready to go play in the playoffs.

00;08;34;06 - 00;08;50;15

Tom Green

And the offensive line, considered a strength for the Broncos, obviously had a difficult time blocking the Chargers, whether it was running or protecting Bo Nix. That's an area where they can either get better or they'll it'll be a short postseason because that's that's a group they're counting up to.

00;08;50;15 - 00;09;16;27

Woody Paige

Two things hit me on the offense aside to the Bo Nix discussion that we're having. Number one, I think they're using the wrong running back. Every time I see McLaughlin that we know he can't block. That's why, you know, when he goes in the game, he's going to get the ball because he can't block. But Harvey's not doing the job for me.

00;09;16;29 - 00;09;43;02

Woody Paige

Averaging 2 or 3 yards per rush. And they're not getting any kind of performance either. Tight ends, they go through 18 tight ends and they're not getting they're not even using the tight ends. They got a guy with the Pro Bowler not long ago and they throw to him like twice a game. So I think that we've given Peyton a lot of credit during the course of the year.

00;09;43;02 - 00;10;04;21

Woody Paige

But we've also give him a great deal of criticism for sure. He's got to do a better job with Bo Nix. I was watching the game and Nix's at the line of scrimmage going kill, kill, and it was more than one time that he was calling off what Peyton was calling from the sidelines, and he did you see the line where he reached over and said, you know, let's get with it, guys.

00;10;04;22 - 00;10;26;21

Woody Paige

Yeah, he's he's yelling at the sideline, yelling at the head coach. So he's willing to take on the head coach. We've seen that since he's gotten here where he'll get into discussions I'll call it that on the sideline with with with Sean Payton. But I think that it's Payton's got to do a better job of coaching him up for this game.

00;10;26;23 - 00;10;28;25

Woody Paige

And I haven't seen him be coached.

00;10;28;27 - 00;10;48;00

Ron Zappolo

You can coach him up all you want, but at the end of the day, it's up to the quarterback to make the throws or not make the throws. I mean, you got to be accurate. You got to hit people in stride. You can't play the way he's playing to to your points. There's a reason why the tight end is bounced around the NFL.

00;10;48;03 - 00;11;09;17

Ron Zappolo

That's number one. He'll be playing somewhere else next year. Number two, the best running back they could play is the guy who's hurt and can't play. Yeah. And so when you add all that stuff up, this is what they have offensively. Nothing's going to change. And they're going to have to significantly raise the level of their play.

00;11;09;18 - 00;11;24;12

Ron Zappolo

The question is can they do that now Sean Payton can certainly be a part of that in in game planning and how he calls plays. But when it's when the everything's flying, it's up to Bo Nix to make plays.

00;11;24;13 - 00;11;34;15

Woody Paige

On a positive side though, they won the last Super Bowl ten years ago. Super Bowl 50, the Super 60. They won it with a pretty mediocre offense.

00;11;34;15 - 00;11;35;08

Ron Zappolo

Yes.

00;11;35;11 - 00;11;40;04

Woody Paige

Peyton Manning was coming back from an injury and really wasn't Peyton Manning.

00;11;40;06 - 00;11;44;12

Ron Zappolo

To be at. You're right, he was kind of a mediocre presence at that point.

00;11;44;14 - 00;11;45;19

Tom Green

And I had to read. They had.

00;11;45;19 - 00;11;46;20

Woody Paige

A pretty good running.

00;11;46;21 - 00;11;52;07

Ron Zappolo

But that defense was better than this defense. Yes.

00;11;52;11 - 00;11;54;04

Tom Green

Oh yeah. They were a couple of ways.

00;11;54;05 - 00;11;59;07

Ron Zappolo

In a lot of ways they put more pressure on the quarterback. They created more takeaways.

00;11;59;07 - 00;12;00;22

Tom Green

They were also veteran guys.

00;12;00;22 - 00;12;08;27

Ron Zappolo

Yes. Veteran guys. If there was a better. Not that this defense doesn't have a lot of individual, terrific, talented players. I was going.

00;12;08;27 - 00;12;21;27

Tom Green

To ask you about the defense though, because it does seem like at times in games or in the season that their performance so solid for the first whatever, eight or 10 or 12 games has become a little more uneven. Yeah, I take it more toll.

00;12;21;29 - 00;12;44;12

Ron Zappolo

Injuries for one thing. Number two, they did have phenomenal sack totals all year. But if you watch the last six weeks, most of those sacks came in the first 12 or 13 weeks. They're not getting to the quarterback the way that they did earlier in the season. You watch a lot of games. Nick Benito, his name is not called that much.

00;12;44;14 - 00;12;45;22

Ron Zappolo

All of this.

00;12;45;25 - 00;13;01;21

Woody Paige

I want I want to I want to defend him a little bit. He got in playing with a, myriad of injuries with a club they were talking about during the game last week where he couldn't pull down the quarterback. Well, he hit a collarbone.

00;13;01;23 - 00;13;04;17

Ron Zappolo

And I'm not being critical of Nick Benito. He's had a great year, and.

00;13;04;17 - 00;13;05;15

Woody Paige

He made a huge.

00;13;05;15 - 00;13;12;01

Ron Zappolo

Play. If you're on the field. Yeah. What do we say? You if you're on the field you're not you're getting you're playing. Yeah.

00;13;12;02 - 00;13;30;08

Woody Paige

Yeah. And I would say this about Sean Payton who's emphasizing you got to get turnovers. They're not going to get the interceptions. They get they got an interception in that game. That really was that was the only touchdown in the game. They got the interception because it was bounced off the wide receiver.

00;13;30;10 - 00;13;38;03

Ron Zappolo

They got the interception because Trey Lance showed again why he has no business in the NFL.

00;13;38;03 - 00;14;00;03

Woody Paige

If you're playing I think I've said this to you. Yeah. So having watched this game for 50 years they're playing man defense. You don't get interceptions playing man defense. You get interceptions playing in his own right. So they're not going to get those turnovers. They're not getting the fumble recoveries because I don't think they're effectively a attacking and tackling.

00;14;00;05 - 00;14;07;12

Woody Paige

We've seen that over and over again with running backs that that's why you're not getting the turnovers. And I think people not paying attention to that.

00;14;07;12 - 00;14;25;26

Tom Green

You know, I want to, promote shamelessly our, weekend betting edition of After the Horn because we got the two college football semifinals and we have all these other playoff games that will determine who the Broncos might be playing down the road. My favorite game of the games coming up this weekend. And there's some good ones.

00;14;25;26 - 00;14;28;12

Tom Green

Packers bears is great, but I think bills Jaguars.

00;14;28;12 - 00;14;29;03

Ron Zappolo

Bills Jaguars.

00;14;29;11 - 00;14;30;22

Tom Green

Is going to stack up a matchup.

00;14;30;22 - 00;14;41;07

Ron Zappolo

Best game two quarterbacks who are almost like no mirror images of each other. Trevor Lawrence is playing the same way Josh Allen has played. You saw it in here. That's a game. That's a toss.

00;14;41;07 - 00;14;45;18

Woody Paige

Up. I was surprised the bills were picked of their favorite to win the game in Jacksonville.

00;14;45;18 - 00;14;47;17

Tom Green

I think that's just because the bills have been there.

00;14;47;18 - 00;15;01;21

Ron Zappolo

You know what. There's four road teams this weekend that are favored. Because you have some of these division winners like Carolina and some other people that aren't Steelers then really aren't that good.

00;15;01;24 - 00;15;06;11

Tom Green

So that you do think the Rams are going to go into Carolina or Carolina was pretty underwhelming.

00;15;06;12 - 00;15;12;17

Woody Paige

Ten and a half point favorite on the road against a team that back to division winner.

00;15;12;19 - 00;15;32;09

Ron Zappolo

And who can I bring up? Something that bothered me over the weekend watching the games, because I just sat at home and watch football. There was so many bad games, and I get the tanking that we can talk about the tanking all you want, but there was the Jets have been tanking for six weeks. The Raiders bent over backwards to tank.

00;15;32;16 - 00;15;35;09

Woody Paige

They didn't have to bend over backwards to tank. And then.

00;15;35;09 - 00;15;36;09

Speaker 3

They won. Here's what.

00;15;36;09 - 00;16;03;22

Ron Zappolo

You do. You players don't tank. Organizations tank. You know an organization says play Brady Cook at quarterback for a month. We don't care if he can't complete a pass or an organization, says Brock Bowers. Take the rest of the year off. Max Crosby, we know you want to play. Yeah, you're good. But what bothered me even more than the tanking, there were numerous games last weekend, and if I was the NFL, it would concern me.

00;16;03;24 - 00;16;12;24

Ron Zappolo

The teams that were alive for seeding to get a better seed said the hell with it. We don't care.

00;16;12;25 - 00;16;13;18

Tom Green

We'd rather be healthy.

00;16;13;18 - 00;16;37;25

Ron Zappolo

We'd rather be healthy. The Chargers, the Eagles, Packers, the bears, the Packers were locked in. But here's my problem. I think they've got to do something to make games more appetizing. Because if you went to the Denver Charger game, you should demand a refund. That was bad, that had all the, juice of a preseason game. It was terrible.

00;16;37;28 - 00;17;01;16

Ron Zappolo

It was a bad product. And it was the same thing with, Washington and Philadelphia. Somehow they got a they have to make these teams. Maybe you pay them more. The higher seed you get or you give seeds. You can't do what I like with the idea of the number one seed gets a week off. Make the seeds more valuable.

00;17;01;17 - 00;17;17;28

Ron Zappolo

Because if they go to an 18 game season, which they which they're going to do, you're going to get to a point where teams will, with three weeks out, we'll stop, will say, nope. Yeah. Don't care. We're going to make it. I'm going to rest my quarterback.

00;17;17;29 - 00;17;19;13

Tom Green

I'm going to be more.

00;17;19;15 - 00;17;37;10

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. And it's a bad look for the NFL there. There were 3 or 4 really good games that meant something to the Pittsburgh Baltimore game. The Tampa Bay Carolina game, the Seattle San Francisco game. But other than that, the games were terrible. And it's a bad look for the NFL.

00;17;37;11 - 00;17;40;13

Woody Paige

Well, I've got a solution for you. I could have a transfer portal.

00;17;40;13 - 00;17;42;14

Speaker 3

Yeah, and there you go.

00;17;42;17 - 00;17;43;09

Woody Paige

Players could.

00;17;43;09 - 00;17;43;26

Ron Zappolo

Transfer.

00;17;43;26 - 00;17;47;01

Woody Paige

Portal back, scroll. Like I'd say. You just jump. Nobody.

00;17;47;04 - 00;17;54;14

Ron Zappolo

They could do the same thing. Like the Giants fired their coach in mid-season. They could have gone and hired Mike Tomlin four weeks ago.

00;17;54;16 - 00;17;55;28

Speaker 3

Said go, come on.

00;17;55;29 - 00;17;57;24

Ron Zappolo

Or you could be, you.

00;17;57;24 - 00;18;08;16

Tom Green

Know, who are the of the coaches who are now gone? Because it's funny because, Kevin Stefanski was mostly called a moron through the year, and now he's the hottest property. He's, you know, he's the most come.

00;18;08;17 - 00;18;10;01

Woody Paige

To the year twice. Yeah.

00;18;10;01 - 00;18;13;19

Ron Zappolo

Because Vince Lombardi couldn't have coached the Browns.

00;18;13;21 - 00;18;23;06

Tom Green

So it's Kevin Stefanski Raheem Moore I mean are any of these you know Pete Carroll is not going to get another job or any of these guys. Somebody who's going to turn another franchise over to.

00;18;23;06 - 00;18;46;19

Woody Paige

You, that every team that has a vacancy is going to interview Vance Joseph, and he deserves a second chance of being head coach. He has proven it with the second best defense, had a good defense last year. But there's a reason why every team is going to him. He's he's your Rooney choice Rooney choice.

00;18;46;19 - 00;18;51;08

Ron Zappolo

Which if you're Vance Johnson how do you feel about that or Vance Joseph.

00;18;51;08 - 00;18;52;07

Woody Paige

Excuse me. How do you.

00;18;52;07 - 00;18;52;19

Ron Zappolo

Feel.

00;18;52;22 - 00;19;02;28

Woody Paige

Well, it's the same way that a former c u running back felt for years and years. He was Eric Bieniemy. Yeah, he was the Rooney Rule.

00;19;03;00 - 00;19;10;15

Tom Green

Of the rule was written to to help. And instead it's become a, you know, just something that teams abuse that they.

00;19;10;15 - 00;19;12;01

Ron Zappolo

Will be rid.

00;19;12;01 - 00;19;15;14

Woody Paige

Of it. But, you know, lay it out there what the facts are, they.

00;19;15;14 - 00;19;16;11

Tom Green

Have some teeth in it.

00;19;16;11 - 00;19;19;22

Ron Zappolo

But will the Raiders hire Brian Flores as their head coach?

00;19;19;24 - 00;19;21;28

Tom Green

Brian Flores didn't like the Rooney Rule much.

00;19;22;00 - 00;19;36;09

Ron Zappolo

Not too much. And he's suing the NFL. But you know what? He's the absolute best candidate. Short of either Mike Tomlin or Harbaugh getting fired. He's the best candidate there. We'll see if he gets a job.

00;19;36;17 - 00;19;58;29

Tom Green

Six vacancies though. And you look at these six vacancies. And obviously these are teams that are you know if you're if you're you know where the Raiders are the Giants are you're in desperate straits. But then you look at the differences in what teams do you know that the Ben Johnson click Liam Cohen click. And you look at some of these other hirings and you go oh my God this is a disaster.

00;19;59;02 - 00;19;59;23

Tom Green

You know.

00;19;59;25 - 00;20;01;01

Speaker 3

Who.

00;20;01;04 - 00;20;04;09

Tom Green

How do you know you're getting the guy?

00;20;04;11 - 00;20;24;16

Woody Paige

Well, I'll I'll tell you from my vantage point you hire an offensive coach because what are those coaches? You're just mentioned? What are they doing for their teams? They're developing quarterbacks. Coach Stefanski is already let the word out that, he did not have anything to do with the Watson trade. He was totally against it. He wants they don't have.

00;20;24;17 - 00;20;43;12

Ron Zappolo

To hire an offensive coach, but you have to hire an offensive person. Like, I'll give you a total example. Mike Vrabel is not an offensive coach at all. He might be the coach of the year, but he was smart enough when he got the job to hire Josh McDaniels, who might be the best offensive coach in the NFL.

00;20;43;12 - 00;20;50;25

Tom Green

But you also look at Vrabel and Ben Johnson and Liam Cohen. They all have stud quarterbacks, right? That they even.

00;20;50;25 - 00;20;58;15

Ron Zappolo

Have Woody's point. Ben Johnson and Liam Cohen are good offensive minds. Vrabel is a linebacker. He's a defensive coach.

00;20;58;16 - 00;21;18;20

Woody Paige

But you you said it Josh. For whatever we think about him, how many different thoughts, about his short stint in Denver that he is a head coach, offensive coordinator, that Mike has nothing to do with the offense. He is the offensive.

00;21;18;21 - 00;21;19;03

Ron Zappolo

He's is.

00;21;19;07 - 00;21;20;00

Tom Green

He's also the.

00;21;20;00 - 00;21;25;15

Ron Zappolo

Move. He might be the best assistant coach in the NFL right now.

00;21;25;16 - 00;21;26;25

Tom Green

He'd have to be on the short list.

00;21;26;25 - 00;21;28;01

Ron Zappolo

He would, wouldn't he.

00;21;28;03 - 00;21;29;28

Woody Paige

But nobody's going to ever talk to him again.

00;21;29;28 - 00;21;35;05

Ron Zappolo

No, he's done because you have you get so many chances and he got his.

00;21;35;05 - 00;21;38;01

Woody Paige

He even got another chance that he backed out of.

00;21;38;05 - 00;21;44;23

Ron Zappolo

So yeah he he he pulled the Belichick. He all but went oh by the way should anyone.

00;21;44;26 - 00;21;45;25

Speaker 3

Call.

00;21;45;27 - 00;21;49;17

Ron Zappolo

Bill Belichick. Or is that ship completely sailed.

00;21;49;18 - 00;21;52;00

Tom Green

I think people should call him not to hire him.

00;21;52;02 - 00;21;59;27

Speaker 3

Just to see how he's the CEO. He's how are you, buddy? I'm not going on. And are you getting married? How's that young lady? Oh.

00;21;59;28 - 00;22;00;19

Tom Green

All right, let's go.

00;22;00;25 - 00;22;02;11

Speaker 3

One more thing. Yeah. Go ahead.

00;22;02;14 - 00;22;13;27

Ron Zappolo

Do you think Arthur Blank just fired Raheem Morris after two years? He won his last four games. He tied the division.

00;22;13;27 - 00;22;16;08

Tom Green

Yeah. With they ended up eight nine.

00;22;16;10 - 00;22;24;04

Ron Zappolo

On the debate night. Do you think if Arthur Blank was sitting here. I know he's a lot older. And we asked him, hey, two years ago he couldn't.

00;22;24;04 - 00;22;24;23

Woody Paige

Be much older.

00;22;24;23 - 00;22;34;21

Ron Zappolo

Than me. Well, he's a little bit older than you. Two years ago, Bill Belichick wanted the job. Yeah. You interviewed him. Did you make a mistake by not hiring him?

00;22;34;24 - 00;22;39;13

Tom Green

I wondered if he just didn't want all that came with Bill and some of that you know it's football.

00;22;39;13 - 00;23;07;08

Ron Zappolo

You know what comes with Bill or what did used to come with Bill. Yeah. Did used to bring championships. Yeah. Now again I think he's listen I think Pete Carroll getting fired hurts Bill Belichick because I think there's a sense around the NFL. Everybody likes Pete Carroll. Everybody respects him. But he's too old. And and it was proven this year he was out of touch.

00;23;07;11 - 00;23;08;08

Ron Zappolo

And I think that hurts.

00;23;08;13 - 00;23;11;07

Tom Green

Do you really blame Pete Carroll for the Raiders. No. Yeah.

00;23;11;10 - 00;23;12;04

Speaker 3

No I but you don't.

00;23;12;04 - 00;23;16;13

Ron Zappolo

Want you want to know who I really blame. There's two guys. The owner.

00;23;16;13 - 00;23;16;24

Tom Green

Right.

00;23;17;01 - 00;23;21;27

Ron Zappolo

Who's appears to be a doofus appears.

00;23;21;29 - 00;23;27;07

Speaker 3

Are you talking just like this guy looks like a dubious,

00;23;27;09 - 00;23;48;10

Ron Zappolo

And the other guy I blame is the golden boy, Tom Brady. Yeah. I mean, if you're going to take over and you're going to sit up in the press box with headset earphones on, and you're going to tell people and Pete Carroll and Davis are going to say, we bounce everything off him and he's going to make decisions for the franchise.

00;23;48;12 - 00;23;54;00

Ron Zappolo

And you're the worst, arguably franchise in the NFL. Yeah, you got to take some blame. Is it.

00;23;54;00 - 00;23;56;21

Tom Green

A problem. What Brady is the head. Yeah.

00;23;56;21 - 00;24;14;27

Ron Zappolo

So what about what about Troy Aikman. And how about Matt Ryan right now. But now it's this whole thing where you know what. And this we don't want to get into political discussion. Although we could. And this gets to the point of hey you know what? If you got the power, you can do whatever the hell you want.

00;24;14;28 - 00;24;15;13

Tom Green

They'll.

00;24;15;15 - 00;24;26;00

Ron Zappolo

So Brady had the power to do it. None of the owners said anything. So Aikman says, hey, I can do it. And then Matt Ryan says, why can't I do it?

00;24;26;00 - 00;24;32;02

Woody Paige

Who started that trend? Brady a guy. We had a sitting in that chair about 3 or 4 weeks ago.

00;24;32;02 - 00;24;33;09

Tom Green

Never did as much TV.

00;24;33;09 - 00;24;51;09

Ron Zappolo

He didn't do TV like these guys. He wasn't going around every week to production meetings, doing games and and going into other practices and watching and all that stuff. Like Brady has done. The Brady has blatantly it's a blatant conflict of interest. I don't know how we're going to.

00;24;51;09 - 00;24;52;24

Tom Green

Bring in Tracy Wolfson.

00;24;52;26 - 00;24;53;23

Speaker 3

You know?

00;24;53;25 - 00;25;12;03

Ron Zappolo

But here's the point. One of the reasons why they didn't care is because the Raiders suck, right? And everybody is like, yeah, well who the. Trust me, if the Raiders had gone 13 and four this year would have been you would have heard a lot more, about what Brady's doing.

00;25;12;06 - 00;25;13;21

Speaker 3

A lot more.

00;25;13;23 - 00;25;16;09

Tom Green

Let's jump to the nuggets because last night they played.

00;25;16;09 - 00;25;20;08

Woody Paige

And by the way I do blame Al Davis for how they son.

00;25;20;10 - 00;25;22;08

Speaker 3

Yeah I guess.

00;25;22;10 - 00;25;25;13

Ron Zappolo

I'll just turn it over and see. But it's not my fault.

00;25;25;16 - 00;25;39;22

Tom Green

Last night the nuggets played one of the most unique games in franchise history. And in some ways NBA history. Although I don't know if the league or anybody else notices outside of Denver and maybe Philly. But of course they go into Philadelphia. They're missing seven of their top nine players.

00;25;39;22 - 00;25;41;18

Ron Zappolo

I'd say seven of their top seven.

00;25;41;24 - 00;25;43;08

Tom Green

It could be, I think of Bruce.

00;25;43;08 - 00;25;48;23

Ron Zappolo

Brown and Payton Watson. Brown and Peyton Watson are in the mix. But they're 7889.

00;25;48;27 - 00;26;05;14

Tom Green

But they and they went in there the all time Doug Moe no hoper. And I think what everyone forgets is that all those guys are professionals. And I thought it was interesting in one way. They win the game in overtime. And I think all those guys who we don't get to see play much and you think aren't very good.

00;26;05;14 - 00;26;22;01

Tom Green

Jalen Pickett and Zeke energy and all these guys who we think you know can't play got into a game where they didn't have to look over their shoulder. They were going to get plenty of minutes and they didn't have to defer when they were on the court to Nicolo or to Jamal or to Aaron Gordon or, you know, they just they just went out and played hard.

00;26;22;01 - 00;26;29;17

Tom Green

And they're playing the right team, too. They're playing a team that was always ready to check out and Philly.

00;26;29;17 - 00;26;59;25

Ron Zappolo

You touched on it and you guys you hit it right a minute ago. Everybody in the NBA is incredibly good. Yeah there's there are tons of great players who never get an opportunity because the people in front of them are a little bit better. Yeah. And they're in that role. I mean, I've watched the second half in the overtime and you could tell that Jalen Pickett and Zeke Nnaji, these guys, they're good players and they especially Pickett.

00;27;00;03 - 00;27;17;23

Ron Zappolo

He had a chance to go down there against Tyrese Maxey. And Edgecombe was a great rookie. And go down there and play heads up straight up beat them and beat them. Yeah. And it was great for the NBA. And it's what the NBA does well in your point is well taken. Boston's one of the surprise teams in the NBA.

00;27;18;00 - 00;27;36;21

Ron Zappolo

They're playing a bunch of guys that most people don't know and never got a chance in other places. And they're flourishing. So the NBA is loaded with great, great athletes who a lot of times never get a shot. And last night was a reminder that, you know what, there's a lot of great players.

00;27;36;21 - 00;27;57;23

Woody Paige

But I will bring to you that a former player who was well known, I've forgotten his name, to be honest with you, came out about 3 or 4 weeks ago and said there are a lot of players that don't belong in the like. They're not any good. And I totally agree with you about having covered pro basketball for 50 years, that I would see players.

00;27;57;28 - 00;28;28;06

Woody Paige

There was a guy named Anderson that played for the for the nuggets years and Richard Anderson, and he played because of an injury to insult. I think it was. And he came in and he averaged like 23 points a game. And you didn't even see him on the court except in the last 2 or 3 minutes, because there's a guy who played last night that I've watched in garbage time for two years, the all he does is come in and shoot like three three pointers.

00;28;28;06 - 00;28;40;05

Woody Paige

Hunter Tyson yeah, yeah. And you go, what in the world is he doing in the league? He had a extremely good game yesterday, about 19 points. So do you called him the Magnificent Seven is the low.

00;28;40;07 - 00;28;41;05

Tom Green

But I've already done that.

00;28;41;06 - 00;28;48;27

Ron Zappolo

No I think I think Jalen Pickett is he's okay to go to the coach and say hey get me in the rotation at least for like 1012.

00;28;48;27 - 00;29;09;27

Tom Green

So how does that work now. Because you do have those seven guys who all eat all the minutes who didn't play last night in Philadelphia. And some of them won't play for a little while still. But Jalen Pickett playing with confidence and knowing he belongs on the floor. Yeah. But can he can you say you take the ball, run the team shoot the shot.

00;29;09;29 - 00;29;12;25

Tom Green

But can he do that with your good standing. Sure he can.

00;29;12;27 - 00;29;25;07

Ron Zappolo

And say listen he's earned at least 12 13 minutes a game. What why do you want to play Jamal Murray doesn't need to play 37 minutes a game. Yeah. Just just like Jokic shouldn't be playing.

00;29;25;07 - 00;29;29;22

Tom Green

People mean kicking energy around. You know you played the whole thing last night.

00;29;29;22 - 00;29;47;17

Ron Zappolo

He's tough. He's an energy guy. He's he's he's a little you reminds me of Watson a little bit. He's not a great scorer but he's an energy guy. You'll defend. He'll rebound. You'll get the ball. He'll say those guys are all valuable. Those guys can win you as we saw last night. They can win you a game so they help you win a playoff game.

00;29;47;17 - 00;29;48;28

Tom Green

Remember the flush will affect.

00;29;48;28 - 00;29;51;17

Ron Zappolo

All the flush. Well, the fact is.

00;29;51;20 - 00;29;52;20

Tom Green

You worry about the flush.

00;29;52;21 - 00;29;53;22

Ron Zappolo

Well sure butts.

00;29;53;22 - 00;29;54;20

Tom Green

Blame the flush.

00;29;54;20 - 00;30;19;10

Ron Zappolo

Well the flush will is the flush. Well, when you see a guy like Keith Edmondson who was a great college player and came to the nuggets, and his dad thought that he was a tremendous player and met with the head coach and wanted to know why he wasn't playing more and for a moment for a game for a week, he pops.

00;30;19;10 - 00;30;29;09

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, he's got it. Like in the old business, a flush. Well is one of those oil wells they dig and you realize it's, oh, there ain't no oil in me.

00;30;29;12 - 00;30;31;24

Speaker 3

And then the water comes and that was that.

00;30;31;24 - 00;30;43;26

Woody Paige

But you know, what was lost in all of that is who actually lost the game for Philadelphia, the most valuable player in the history of the NBA. Forget about one season he beat you know you know.

00;30;43;26 - 00;30;45;26

Ron Zappolo

It's funny you make a great point about him because I'm.

00;30;45;26 - 00;30;47;18

Speaker 3

Watching the game where.

00;30;47;20 - 00;30;51;02

Ron Zappolo

He's not he's always out of shape always.

00;30;51;02 - 00;30;51;27

Tom Green

Always hurt and.

00;30;51;27 - 00;31;01;13

Ron Zappolo

He's always hurt. And the ball kind of stops when it goes to him. And there were a couple times I thought he had a little guy on him.

00;31;01;16 - 00;31;01;29

Speaker 3

But he did.

00;31;02;02 - 00;31;04;25

Ron Zappolo

He didn't know what to do. Yeah, he should have done.

00;31;04;25 - 00;31;05;10

Speaker 3

He would put.

00;31;05;10 - 00;31;08;14

Woody Paige

Jones on him in the fourth quarter, and he got switched.

00;31;08;14 - 00;31;09;02

Ron Zappolo

On him a few.

00;31;09;02 - 00;31;16;05

Woody Paige

Times. And at the end of the game he's called for goaltending and they lose the game because of being beat and.

00;31;16;07 - 00;31;17;21

Ron Zappolo

Because Bruce Brown went right.

00;31;17;21 - 00;31;30;03

Woody Paige

By saying, yeah, if I just before you get into really important stuff, I think it would be important for all the voters who vote for the MVP. Say, let's redo.

00;31;30;05 - 00;31;32;08

Speaker 3

Let's take a look. Let's take a look.

00;31;32;10 - 00;31;37;12

Ron Zappolo

You know, the problem they have now, Woody, they've got this rule in the NBA that if you don't play 65 games.

00;31;37;12 - 00;31;38;00

Tom Green

Yeah, you're out.

00;31;38;01 - 00;31;39;11

Ron Zappolo

You're not eligible for.

00;31;39;17 - 00;31;42;03

Woody Paige

Well that's the Embiid rule postseason.

00;31;42;03 - 00;31;47;17

Ron Zappolo

It is. And it's they're going to have to look at it because let's say Jokic plays.

00;31;47;17 - 00;31;49;01

Tom Green

63 whatever.

00;31;49;06 - 00;32;10;27

Ron Zappolo

58. Yeah I don't know how long he's going to be out. And he keeps going on this historic pace. He should win it. But my bigger question is how did the nuggets now look at and deal with the next 4 to 6 weeks where you're not going to have him, you're not going to have his back up.

00;32;10;29 - 00;32;24;18

Ron Zappolo

What is it. As as observers of it, what should we expect them? Do we expect them to keep winning games like they have been? Do we expect them to fall into the playing spot? What are our expectations?

00;32;24;20 - 00;32;33;06

Woody Paige

I would guess six. If you could get to six, that would be your objective. If you can get in the top and stay out of the play and stay out.

00;32;33;06 - 00;32;35;10

Ron Zappolo

Of the playing, because I think they're three right now.

00;32;35;15 - 00;32;40;06

Woody Paige

So. So you both have brought up used these players.

00;32;40;06 - 00;32;40;17

Ron Zappolo

Yep.

00;32;40;23 - 00;32;41;17

Woody Paige

More.

00;32;41;20 - 00;32;41;29

Ron Zappolo

Yep.

00;32;41;29 - 00;33;00;27

Woody Paige

Minutes in a game because I think it's very difficult. If you are a player like Pickett and you're getting six minutes, I feel the same way about their backup center. That's Valanciunas yeah that is injured. Now that they need to use him more more.

00;33;00;27 - 00;33;01;25

Ron Zappolo

More I told the.

00;33;01;25 - 00;33;18;15

Woody Paige

Car is the only way you're going to win the playoffs is to go a deep nine deep right. You're not going to win with five players in the playoffs. Well they were nine two for the next four weeks. Just ended is you use these guys as much as you possibly can.

00;33;18;18 - 00;33;19;16

Ron Zappolo

And I agree with that.

00;33;19;23 - 00;33;23;07

Woody Paige

And when those guys do come back.

00;33;23;10 - 00;33;24;28

Ron Zappolo

In they'll all be better off for it.

00;33;24;28 - 00;33;25;11

Woody Paige

Yeah.

00;33;25;12 - 00;33;29;02

Tom Green

Is everyone coming back? So we saw Brown and Gordon come back. They're coming.

00;33;29;02 - 00;33;35;17

Ron Zappolo

Back. They got the night off because they're not going to they're going to be on a minutes restriction. They're not going to play them in back to backs for a while.

00;33;35;19 - 00;33;59;14

Tom Green

What I'm worried about is Valanciunas coming back. I don't whenever big older guys have calf injuries that that doesn't bode well. That becomes the Achilles injury. That becomes the the end. And you look at what Pickett did. You look at what energy did you look at all those guys did last night. And if it did nothing else for them, if they can't find minutes for these guys on the floor, they've enhance their trade value.

00;33;59;17 - 00;34;11;10

Tom Green

And if you're going to need a big body, if Valanciunas can't come back, you know somebody else is going to have to be a man of size to back up Jokic. Those guys might have to be pieces that I.

00;34;11;10 - 00;34;12;25

Ron Zappolo

Think he will come back though I.

00;34;12;25 - 00;34;13;26

Tom Green

Think he's well I don't know.

00;34;14;00 - 00;34;35;23

Ron Zappolo

We don't know. But I do know this. If I'm on the nuggets today I'm feeling a lot better because a month ago it looked like they were ready to hand the trophy to Oklahoma City because they were going to they were going to go 75 and seven and blow through the playoffs. And all of a sudden they sprung a leak.

00;34;35;26 - 00;34;42;04

Ron Zappolo

They got they got run out last night by Charlotte. Charlotte. Charlotte. Pretty.

00;34;42;06 - 00;34;43;16

Tom Green

Not in basketball.

00;34;43;19 - 00;34;45;02

Speaker 3

But.

00;34;45;05 - 00;34;52;25

Ron Zappolo

Listen Oklahoma City is giving hope. Yeah. To the nuggets. To the Wolves.

00;34;52;25 - 00;34;54;20

Tom Green

You everybody.

00;34;54;22 - 00;34;58;29

Ron Zappolo

There's everybody like hey wait a minute. This is more wide open than we thought.

00;34;58;29 - 00;35;07;04

Woody Paige

Why did the nuggets lose the seventh game to Oklahoma City Thunder. They had two guys that were hurt.

00;35;07;08 - 00;35;08;02

Tom Green

Yeah they were all.

00;35;08;02 - 00;35;23;19

Woody Paige

Being beat up. You have they didn't have the bench to compete against the Thunder. Thunder don't have a great bench but they have a good bench. Yeah. Now you got to. You can have players that you can depend on when the injuries do happen in the playoffs.

00;35;23;26 - 00;35;24;22

Speaker 3

It was one game.

00;35;24;24 - 00;35;42;02

Tom Green

I want to see the Nuggets in Boston. And you know the lineup may change a little bit. You may get Christian Brown back. You may get Aaron Gordon back. But and maybe Jamal Murray's playing you know. So now it's a completely different chemistry. But you know these guys had one great game. I thought it was a brilliant show.

00;35;42;02 - 00;35;59;23

Tom Green

But by the Denver Nuggets as a team what they put together out there. But let's let's see. Because if you really now go 12 deep or 13 deep, if you love all those guys so much and they all play so well for you, that's a weapon you have to use. You have to find a way to roll everybody into the mix.

00;35;59;23 - 00;36;04;27

Ron Zappolo

Steve Kerr, best coach in the NBA. He don't mind playing ten guys. I mean that does it all the time.

00;36;04;27 - 00;36;08;06

Tom Green

What is it. There are 240 player minutes in a game.

00;36;08;08 - 00;36;09;01

Ron Zappolo

Divvy them up.

00;36;09;01 - 00;36;12;01

Tom Green

Yeah you got to find a way because 5th May be a lot of minutes.

00;36;12;01 - 00;36;28;00

Ron Zappolo

There's no reason to grind people down in the regular season. Yeah, you're just not. You want them healthy and as fresh as they can be after 82 games for the real season. Yeah. And the more you can give them rest, the better off you are.

00;36;28;05 - 00;36;36;11

Woody Paige

But the final analysis for me is those guys that won last night have got to prove it in four and five minutes.

00;36;36;11 - 00;36;36;27

Ron Zappolo

Yes.

00;36;36;29 - 00;36;42;08

Woody Paige

They've got they've got to come in with that same grit. The coaches have the ground.

00;36;42;08 - 00;36;42;25

Tom Green

Running.

00;36;42;27 - 00;36;55;04

Woody Paige

Energy in games during the regular season in the playoffs okay. You got 21 minutes. You proved you can play 21 minutes, but prove you can play eight minutes in a game.

00;36;55;12 - 00;36;58;01

Ron Zappolo

In a big game. Yeah. In a game that matters.

00;36;58;03 - 00;37;19;20

Tom Green

Fellas, I want to remind everyone about our great new sponsor, American Financing. You know, those credit card bills from the holidays are going to come rolling in soon. Now, if you're a homeowner, no better time than now to call American financing to help wipe out the debt, eliminate stress, and set yourself up for a strong 2026. Again, last month, the fed dropped rates for a fourth time.

00;37;19;20 - 00;37;43;01

Tom Green

American financing can help you access that equity in your home at an interest rate. In the low fives. Yeah, the low fives a much lower rate than the average credit card rate of 20% or even more. 00;37;43;03 - 00;38;06;25

Tom Green

00;38;06;28 - 00;38;08;08

Ron Zappolo

I wonder if we can call that.

00;38;08;08 - 00;38;10;20

Speaker 3

Number. But did you write that down?

00;38;10;22 - 00;38;19;08

Ron Zappolo

Let me write that down. Right. Speaking of flush wells, before we go on to the next thing, do either of you or Natasha do with you? If you watch land, man.

00;38;19;10 - 00;38;21;29

Woody Paige

Every moment of my life over and over.

00;38;21;29 - 00;38;22;25

Ron Zappolo

Again, I do.

00;38;22;27 - 00;38;23;16

Speaker 3

Not know.

00;38;23;23 - 00;38;25;13

Tom Green

I know everyone's into it. It's a.

00;38;25;13 - 00;38;51;25

Ron Zappolo

Religion. I got to tell you every Sunday night after football, I say to my wife, it's time for land, man. And I got to say, I don't think the second season is as good as the first, but I thoroughly enjoy the show, the characters, and I have a very good friend of mine who is a land man, and I called them in season one and said, hey, is this just a Hollywood deal or is this accurate?

00;38;52;00 - 00;39;03;09

Ron Zappolo

And he said, well, I've never had the shit kicked out of me by the drug cartel. But other than that, the facts and figures that Billy Bob throws out there are accurate.

00;39;03;14 - 00;39;12;27

Tom Green

So the thing I'll say, because I haven't seen the show, not a minute of it, I know because I know. But now once I get behind, I'm afraid I'll never catch up. But Billy Bob.

00;39;12;29 - 00;39;14;14

Woody Paige

Will watch three apples.

00;39;14;17 - 00;39;16;13

Ron Zappolo

You can watch him. You can sit at night.

00;39;16;13 - 00;39;17;05

Speaker 3

With.

00;39;17;07 - 00;39;21;11

Tom Green

People, sit in front of your televisions. I'm still reading some great books from, you know.

00;39;21;13 - 00;39;24;09

Speaker 5

He's like, I have a life. Actually, I'm an intellectual.

00;39;24;09 - 00;39;26;12

Ron Zappolo

It's good. You want to give me the last book that you read?

00;39;26;15 - 00;39;27;11

Tom Green

I'm reading Treasure.

00;39;27;11 - 00;39;29;12

Speaker 3

Island, right?

00;39;29;14 - 00;39;31;17

Tom Green

I started it in fifth grade, and I told you.

00;39;31;19 - 00;39;34;24

Ron Zappolo

What I'm going to do when I leave here, and I got to show you. Yeah. All right.

00;39;34;24 - 00;39;36;03

Woody Paige

You got to read Moby Dick.

00;39;36;03 - 00;39;49;28

Ron Zappolo

Well, I've already read Moby Dick, but I. You know, every once in a while, I go on the New York Times book review list because I'm. I'm retired. I got no other excuse, so. And I, I like to read a lot. So I've got books written down.

00;39;50;00 - 00;39;50;28

Woody Paige

I missed Costco.

00;39;51;04 - 00;40;12;04

Ron Zappolo

It's my little Saint Jude children's research hospital. You can look at this. This shows you how old I am. I'm going to buy a book called a marriage at sea about this British couple in 1972, who went on a sailing expedition and had an accident. And, what they went through in their marriage and all that stuff. I'm going to go buy a book called One Day.

00;40;12;04 - 00;40;27;13

Ron Zappolo

Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar Al Akkad, who is writing about the problem in Gaza. I'm going to go by The Last Manager by John Miller, a book about Weaver. And, those are just some I won't.

00;40;27;19 - 00;40;30;29

Tom Green

I just, I just finished Hop on Pop. It was pretty good.

00;40;31;00 - 00;40;31;15

Ron Zappolo

It was it good?

00;40;31;15 - 00;40;31;27

Tom Green

Very.

00;40;31;29 - 00;40;53;24

Ron Zappolo

You know what I just did? I just because I go when I was there, like a month ago, I got a paperback version of The Godfather because I read it like 50 years ago, and I read it since, and I, and I just finished it the other night. It and it was amazing how Francis Ford Coppola, I mean, literally followed the book pretty damn closely.

00;40;53;24 - 00;40;54;06

Ron Zappolo

I mean, just.

00;40;54;07 - 00;41;02;28

Tom Green

Told by someone, I will see this series because I was told rave reviews for the offer, which was the making of The Godfather. Yes, Miles teller and all that. So I haven't seen that.

00;41;02;28 - 00;41;03;21

Woody Paige

That was a good show.

00;41;03;21 - 00;41;20;18

Tom Green

I heard it was good. Yeah. So here's my thing. Billy Bob Thornton, haven't seen the show, but I'm amazed that he and Luke Wilson know so much about cellular technology. Because when they tell me that AT&T or T-Mobile, it's. You could tell they've done the research.

00;41;20;18 - 00;41;22;00

Ron Zappolo

Hey, you won't believe where I am.

00;41;22;00 - 00;41;28;04

Tom Green

They have done the research and they know which cellular company I love Billy.

00;41;28;06 - 00;41;40;03

Woody Paige

Billy Bob. And he said, can you guess where I'm sitting? And I'm thinking as I'm watching him land, man. But I'm also thinking of when he played Bad Santa two.

00;41;40;05 - 00;41;41;03

Speaker 3

I am, too.

00;41;41;05 - 00;41;48;02

Woody Paige

I mean, if I want to go buy a cell phone, I'm going service. I'm going to go along with Billy Bob.

00;41;48;02 - 00;41;48;16

Speaker 3

Yeah, he would.

00;41;48;16 - 00;41;49;29

Woody Paige

Know because of me.

00;41;50;01 - 00;41;51;06

Ron Zappolo

I'm going to great Billy Bob.

00;41;51;08 - 00;41;52;20

Woody Paige

Yeah. And although.

00;41;52;25 - 00;41;55;24

Tom Green

I wasn't as convincing to I but whatever.

00;41;55;27 - 00;42;01;21

Ron Zappolo

You would like it to this year because, Sam Elliott is playing Billy Bob's father.

00;42;01;23 - 00;42;03;10

Tom Green

Okay. That's why I would like it.

00;42;03;16 - 00;42;06;07

Ron Zappolo

Well, yeah, if you like Sam Elliott, who does well.

00;42;06;07 - 00;42;09;09

Woody Paige

And Sam and his physical therapist.

00;42;09;11 - 00;42;13;20

Speaker 3

That, you shouldn't get into all.

00;42;13;20 - 00;42;17;07

Ron Zappolo

This, but say, in this last episode, Sam got a physical.

00;42;17;07 - 00;42;19;03

Speaker 3

Therapist. These.

00;42;19;05 - 00;42;25;01

Ron Zappolo

Are we can't get. You know, part of it is that would be a nice physical therapist. Would.

00;42;25;04 - 00;42;26;27

Woody Paige

Billy Bob hired.

00;42;26;29 - 00;42;28;10

Tom Green

A particular type.

00;42;28;16 - 00;42;38;15

Ron Zappolo

Billy Bob stopped into a business, and he offered this young woman a lot of money to come be his father's physical therapist. And the scenes were great.

00;42;38;17 - 00;42;58;13

Woody Paige

Well, so. So we are promoting it. You watch. Let me see. Here's what you do. Here's. And I think he does the same thing. I watch the nuggets or the avalanche. And they end when they're on these road trips. And I look up and I go, it's only 7:00 and I watch it. So. So then you watch later Matt, and you watch it again.

00;42;58;13 - 00;43;03;15

Ron Zappolo

But you gotta I usually watch it again before the next one. I know, but.

00;43;03;15 - 00;43;08;06

Speaker 5

Now heated rivalry. I've been wanting to ask you guys and I just feel like it's the perfect.

00;43;08;06 - 00;43;10;28

Tom Green

I've only read about it. I have not seen it. Have you seen it?

00;43;10;29 - 00;43;23;27

Speaker 5

He got one of the greatest shows. It's sweeping the nation. Good. Incredible. And I would be really interested to see how you guys feel about it. It's special. It's a great. And it is based off a book. Right. And so it's.

00;43;24;00 - 00;43;25;04

Tom Green

Getting a lot a lot of.

00;43;25;04 - 00;43;26;05

Speaker 5

Buzz and a lot of.

00;43;26;05 - 00;43;31;23

Tom Green

Love. I haven't seen it yet. I've always decided I'm not going to really grade anything until I've tried it. So you.

00;43;31;23 - 00;43;32;13

Speaker 5

Gotta take.

00;43;32;13 - 00;43;32;25

Tom Green

A look at.

00;43;32;25 - 00;43;34;08

Speaker 5

It. First episode, you'll be hooked.

00;43;34;11 - 00;43;41;10

Woody Paige

Me and you and Tom is. He has to sit at home and study the commercials he's doing. Yeah.

00;43;41;10 - 00;43;41;27

Tom Green

That's true.

00;43;41;27 - 00;43;43;11

Woody Paige

Do such a good job.

00;43;43;15 - 00;43;45;24

Ron Zappolo

You and I just sit here and.

00;43;45;27 - 00;43;46;08

Tom Green

Well.

00;43;46;08 - 00;43;47;19

Ron Zappolo

Reel it in.

00;43;47;22 - 00;43;48;08

Tom Green

I don't know.

00;43;48;09 - 00;43;49;18

Woody Paige

What are we. Let's talk some.

00;43;49;24 - 00;43;54;11

Tom Green

So I was going to ask you about the avalanche are suddenly on the ropes. They've lost one that.

00;43;54;11 - 00;43;55;25

Ron Zappolo

Have been more fun, though.

00;43;55;27 - 00;43;57;19

Tom Green

The avalanche have lost one.

00;43;57;21 - 00;43;58;15

Ron Zappolo

Other on the ropes.

00;43;58;15 - 00;44;04;29

Woody Paige

I think we do it. I think we do another show each week, and we do books and movies. Yeah, TV.

00;44;05;04 - 00;44;08;14

Tom Green

Well, it's because the people are clamoring for more.

00;44;08;17 - 00;44;08;28

Speaker 3

You know, you.

00;44;08;28 - 00;44;11;06

Tom Green

Can probably hear the clamoring outside.

00;44;11;09 - 00;44;14;20

Ron Zappolo

How many games are the ads going to lose this year in regulation?

00;44;14;24 - 00;44;16;12

Tom Green

So they're up to three. They're up to.

00;44;16;12 - 00;44;16;28

Ron Zappolo

Three.

00;44;16;28 - 00;44;23;04

Tom Green

We're getting around halfway. So you'd put them on pace for six? I'll say 15. I don't think.

00;44;23;04 - 00;44;24;17

Ron Zappolo

They'll even get to 15.

00;44;24;22 - 00;44;28;18

Tom Green

But hey, you got to stay healthy. I mean, the Landeskog injury was scary.

00;44;28;18 - 00;44;39;09

Woody Paige

Here's what's more important. Let me interrupt you. Here's my concern. Do not go into overtimes. Yeah. They may set the record also for overtime losses.

00;44;39;15 - 00;44;40;10

Tom Green

They get better late.

00;44;40;12 - 00;44;44;26

Ron Zappolo

They do. But I watched that Vegas game a couple weeks ago. I was best hockey game I've seen all year.

00;44;44;26 - 00;44;49;04

Tom Green

But they also I I'm curious as to how the Olympic break affects.

00;44;49;09 - 00;45;01;08

Ron Zappolo

What's going on with the Olympic break. Is the rink ready for play or are they going to freeze over? They're going to aqueduct over there like my father used to do. They're going to say, go ahead, guys, skate on that.

00;45;01;08 - 00;45;04;08

Tom Green

They got a guy painting, got little line a half an hour before the game.

00;45;04;15 - 00;45;09;20

Woody Paige

I think I'm the only person in the building that was in Norway for that and.

00;45;09;20 - 00;45;10;18

Tom Green

A little time, I think.

00;45;10;18 - 00;45;11;12

Ron Zappolo

I think you are.

00;45;11;16 - 00;45;17;21

Woody Paige

And they built a rink inside a cave. They had to actually carve out a cave.

00;45;17;21 - 00;45;18;26

Speaker 3

That's Norway though.

00;45;18;28 - 00;45;23;14

Woody Paige

Yes it is, but don't you think you can build a rink in four years?

00;45;23;17 - 00;45;26;26

Speaker 3

I'd like to think it's doable. South suburban did it.

00;45;26;28 - 00;45;29;29

Woody Paige

Yeah, that's not in a cave. It's not on the side of a wall.

00;45;30;00 - 00;45;33;25

Ron Zappolo

I just get a kick out of it that I read rink not ready.

00;45;33;28 - 00;45;45;26

Tom Green

So. But so. But you look at like if you're a team, I think every team wants the break. The Avs half their team is going to play in the Olympics. So it's not going to be that much of a break. But for three weeks off, you know.

00;45;45;29 - 00;45;50;06

Ron Zappolo

If I was the Avs, I would not want to break that. Things are going to well.

00;45;50;13 - 00;46;15;05

Woody Paige

My concern would be what happened to Joe Sakic, in Japan, when they played, he played for the Olympic team. He got hurt in the second game and couldn't come back for weeks. And I think that affected that team. They didn't win the championship. So with that number of players in the Olympics, yeah, playing hockey, you got to be fearful of guys getting hurt.

00;46;15;08 - 00;46;33;07

Woody Paige

And I mean two nights ago I'm the lead this guy thing with the way he's played since he's been healthy again. Yep. And to lose your captain and you're telling me today because I asked both of you because they are NHL hide secrets better than the administration of this country.

00;46;33;10 - 00;46;37;08

Ron Zappolo

That I would go quite that far.

00;46;37;10 - 00;46;38;26

Speaker 3

The the the.

00;46;38;28 - 00;46;43;07

Woody Paige

You're telling me he's got. I thought he had a bad knee.

00;46;43;10 - 00;46;45;02

Ron Zappolo

Well, I think the Habs have to go to college.

00;46;45;03 - 00;46;45;27

Woody Paige

And you're telling me it's.

00;46;45;27 - 00;46;51;09

Ron Zappolo

You know what his condition is? You gotta tell Congress first. It's a law. Excuse me.

00;46;51;09 - 00;46;52;03

Speaker 3

Go ahead.

00;46;52;05 - 00;47;06;02

Tom Green

I think we'll learn about Landeskog later today. They're playing in Tampa tonight. Obviously the Avs you know, much like the nuggets have built themselves a cushion of luxury. The Avs more than the nuggets where they go you're not right. Take all.

00;47;06;02 - 00;47;15;07

Ron Zappolo

The time. We've all covered the NHL for decades. One thing we can all agree on. They're going a lot like dogs when it comes to injuries and you'll never know. And that's how do you.

00;47;15;07 - 00;47;20;23

Woody Paige

Think that's possible in Venezuela that 32 Cubans have lower body injury.

00;47;20;25 - 00;47;21;22

Speaker 3

As a result?

00;47;21;22 - 00;47;26;25

Ron Zappolo

Well, I can tell you what. 100 Cubans have the worst kind of injuries.

00;47;26;27 - 00;47;28;13

Tom Green

That the bad ones.

00;47;28;15 - 00;47;30;07

Speaker 3

The really the.

00;47;30;10 - 00;47;30;29

Ron Zappolo

Really bad.

00;47;30;29 - 00;47;32;22

Woody Paige

For those with lower body.

00;47;32;23 - 00;47;36;27

Ron Zappolo

Lower body. Yeah. The lower, lower body injuries. All right.

00;47;37;00 - 00;47;44;25

Tom Green

Here at I think everyone's getting excited because we turned into 2026. And now we all can really start to look forward to the Major League Baseball season.

00;47;44;25 - 00;47;45;22

Ron Zappolo

Oh, yeah.

00;47;45;24 - 00;48;00;24

Tom Green

The Rockies, instead of announcing any signings, any free agents, they announced it was Chris Bryant's birthday on social media. And I think we're a little surprised at that. The comment section, wasn't so positive about Chris celebrating another birthday.

00;48;00;26 - 00;48;26;16

Ron Zappolo

So, hey, do you remember that great scene in, Major League when Tom Berenger goes to the, the apartment of his ex fiancee and there's a little dinner, a little cocktail party, and lady says, well, what do you do? Well, I play for the Indians. We still have a team. And he goes, yeah, uniforms and everything. I feel like sometimes we're living that out here in Denver.

00;48;26;18 - 00;48;52;20

Woody Paige

He decide to that story about major leaguers. I loved when a more kid came to town. So Bob Uecker, who I'd known for a long time, we just sit there and tell stories. And Bob was telling me about doing Major League, that he never once saw any of the movie. They just brought him in and put him in an empty press box and ad libbed and ad lib there for like three days.

00;48;52;20 - 00;48;56;20

Tom Green

We did have the greatest color man in the business, right alongside money.

00;48;56;22 - 00;48;58;17

Ron Zappolo

There was a great baseball movie.

00;48;58;21 - 00;49;00;17

Woody Paige

You know, call him the best.

00;49;00;19 - 00;49;01;11

Speaker 3

You don't call him the.

00;49;01;11 - 00;49;06;29

Ron Zappolo

Best color man in baseball for nothing. Just a bit outside. That's been repeated.

00;49;07;02 - 00;49;08;07

Speaker 3

10 million times.

00;49;08;07 - 00;49;11;19

Tom Green

So we got about we got about six weeks to go before the offseason.

00;49;11;21 - 00;49;12;04

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;49;12;07 - 00;49;26;19

Woody Paige

It's a he killed squirrel. But he told me he said they just said do whatever you want to do. And so I, I assume everybody watching assault Major League and probably everybody watching this did not see Major League Two.

00;49;26;23 - 00;49;27;23

Speaker 3

Yeah when it.

00;49;27;25 - 00;49;28;11

Tom Green

Didn't pan.

00;49;28;11 - 00;49;42;14

Woody Paige

Out. But Uecker gives one of the greatest performances in the history of movie dumb as far as I'm concerned. And he said I never saw anything. I didn't know what they were doing in. They was brilliant to do this just a bit outside.

00;49;42;14 - 00;49;46;06

Tom Green

So the Rockies and Red Sox, the only two teams.

00;49;46;09 - 00;50;02;17

Ron Zappolo

That's true. But the Red Sox will tell you, hey, we've made like ten trades and they have because they're fleecing Saint Louis for whatever. Sonny, Sonny Gray and Wilson Contreras. Yeah, but for the for the Rockies. Any action now, I think.

00;50;02;17 - 00;50;14;04

Woody Paige

Would you think when you think that with a new administrative regime that they would go out and get somebody just to give you a little bit of hope?

00;50;14;10 - 00;50;14;19

Ron Zappolo

So,

00;50;14;21 - 00;50;32;04

Woody Paige

We have seen, I think it to this point, five Asian players who come here and they haven't pitched to drop in regard to any of them. I mean, not even they're not even mentioned among seven teams that reached out to them that have they they haven't.

00;50;32;06 - 00;50;37;01

Ron Zappolo

Well, you know what the Who said meet the new boss. Same as the old ball.

00;50;37;02 - 00;50;38;14

Speaker 3

Well, what about this though.

00;50;38;17 - 00;50;59;10

Tom Green

If you're like, didn't people speculated that John Elway was Paxton Lynch gun shy when it came to Josh Allen? That that that was one of the little reticence is as far as moving forward with that. And if you are the Rockies and you think, what if we bring in some veteran hitter or something as like, well, Chris, Brian is still sitting here.

00;50;59;11 - 00;51;13;25

Ron Zappolo

Can I say something about Elway? Well, you brought it up and kudos to us because, you know, as a retired guy, I have nothing to do. And I went on the computer about three nights ago and watched Elway with Shannon Sharpe Chase club.

00;51;13;25 - 00;51;14;12

Tom Green

Very good.

00;51;14;16 - 00;51;35;24

Ron Zappolo

And it was really good. But I thought and this is no knock on Shannon, who I adore. He's not a professional interviewer, even though he gets people to say stuff. And I thought John was more, open here. He was open there too. But Shannon did.

00;51;36;00 - 00;51;37;27

Tom Green

Different with an old teammate, with all to.

00;51;37;27 - 00;51;53;17

Ron Zappolo

Me. But to your point, the one thing that he did tell Shannon that I felt that was fascinating was he said he wanted to draft Josh Allen and that the coaching staff said, absolutely not. And that's looking back.

00;51;53;17 - 00;51;54;26

Tom Green

That's Vance. Right?

00;51;54;28 - 00;51;59;02

Ron Zappolo

Well, he didn't mention by name. And I don't know if he meant the coach.

00;51;59;02 - 00;51;59;20

Tom Green

But that era.

00;51;59;20 - 00;52;17;09

Ron Zappolo

Would that era that would be Vance Joseph. Yeah. But I can't imagine for the life of me that Vance Joseph, who spent his whole time here with no quarterback, would have said to the GM, you want to draft this quarterback? Hell no. I like what we have. I that I find that hard.

00;52;17;16 - 00;52;18;11

Tom Green

Was it was.

00;52;18;15 - 00;52;27;20

Ron Zappolo

Because he did say that looking back, I should have just ignored them and drafted him. And I'd never heard him say that before.

00;52;27;20 - 00;52;29;00

Tom Green

He called it his greatest mistake.

00;52;29;00 - 00;52;37;21

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, as a he did, but I never heard it that way where he said, hey, I was all in. I wanted to do it. And the entire coaching staff said, no.

00;52;37;23 - 00;53;02;27

Woody Paige

His offensive coordinator, Josh Allen's offensive coordinator, is now at Montana, Montana state. And he told me I got to be kind of friends with him because he and Josh Allen would come down to Cherry Creek to up for Wyoming. And he said when the Broncos would reach out to him, they kept saying his, percentage of pass completions were bad.

00;53;02;27 - 00;53;06;13

Woody Paige

And he said, I tell him, have you ever seen a game in Wyoming with the wins.

00;53;06;20 - 00;53;07;26

Ron Zappolo

You ever been to?

00;53;07;29 - 00;53;26;10

Woody Paige

And secondly, he said after his junior year, he lost all his wide receivers. He had no wide receivers his senior. And so they were paying not paying attention to the fundamental problems that existed in Wyoming. You're in Colorado, but.

00;53;26;10 - 00;53;34;29

Tom Green

Josh was considered raw by all teams. He was not considered a finished product. Yeah, he came in. He had a you know, he had the not Peyton Manning, but he but he had that quarterback.

00;53;34;29 - 00;53;39;10

Ron Zappolo

He was raw. But everybody could see that there was something there.

00;53;39;11 - 00;53;40;00

Tom Green

Big arm.

00;53;40;00 - 00;53;42;07

Ron Zappolo

Yeah really big guy big arm.

00;53;42;07 - 00;54;02;05

Woody Paige

But I I've, I've said this to John and we would talk about it. We have over the years since that happened in the he said I said John he was you. Yeah. It was John Elway, the same guy. I said, you did you ever look at your passing percentage, his passing percentage. You go back was in the 50s?

00;54;02;05 - 00;54;02;25

Woody Paige

Yeah. It was not.

00;54;03;02 - 00;54;05;18

Tom Green

Which a lot of guys threw used to throw in the 50s.

00;54;05;18 - 00;54;32;27

Woody Paige

And he they were concerned about his passing percentage. They were concerned about whether he when he played against in non-conference games, he didn't play very well. He'd go on the road, lose at Michigan or Ohio State somewhere. He lost. And he said they paid a lot of attention to the fact that against big non-conference foes, he struggled know match.

00;54;32;28 - 00;54;33;08

Speaker 3

Yeah.

00;54;33;08 - 00;54;43;05

Woody Paige

And they didn't look at the potential there. And John does take the blame for it now. He didn't want to do it publicly. And he'd say to me, I'm not going to.

00;54;43;07 - 00;55;00;15

Tom Green

It's funny to measure Wyoming against those because I remember I covered Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl against Barry Sanders. Yeah, they were outclassed. I mean, you know, like you're really going to measure it, but like Wyoming went to Michigan and struggled. I'd be going, yeah, yeah. Every position you know. And on the two.

00;55;00;15 - 00;55;10;25

Ron Zappolo

Deep I remember doing a game on channel four Logan and I did it. And Barry Sanders came in and everybody was so excited and.

00;55;10;27 - 00;55;13;02

Tom Green

He couldn't get on the field because of Thurman Thomas.

00;55;13;02 - 00;55;22;20

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, we'll design a way to stop him in about 240 yards later, Logan looks at me and goes, this is ridiculous. And he was that good.

00;55;22;20 - 00;55;24;03

Tom Green

He'd catch punt. Yeah.

00;55;24;05 - 00;55;28;16

Ron Zappolo

It was just he made every play special.

00;55;28;18 - 00;55;31;04

Speaker 3

Well, yeah.

00;55;31;07 - 00;55;34;03

Ron Zappolo

It's a it's better than talking about the Rock. You know, we supposed to do another.

00;55;34;03 - 00;55;37;11

Tom Green

15 seconds on the Rockies to do the minimum. Tom.

00;55;37;11 - 00;55;40;11

Ron Zappolo

The honest to God thing. All right. We had nothing to say about the Rock.

00;55;40;17 - 00;55;56;24

Woody Paige

I say this on TV. You guys spent 80 years too many television. Aren't you obligated to, like, say what? The station's name is restricted. Right. We're obligated to, by law to talk about the Rockies for five minutes. So let's.

00;55;56;24 - 00;55;57;21

Speaker 3

Talk about.

00;55;57;23 - 00;56;01;12

Tom Green

Let's talk about, how many how many port siders are they going to do?

00;56;01;15 - 00;56;05;18

Ron Zappolo

Are we going to do, are we going to Natasha? Are we going to do grinding my gears?

00;56;05;20 - 00;56;09;20

Speaker 5

Well, I just figure that whenever you talk about the Rockies at this point, that do.

00;56;09;22 - 00;56;09;25

Speaker 3

I.

00;56;09;25 - 00;56;35;11

Ron Zappolo

Do it off the top of my head, grinding my, sure of it off the wall. I could do a couple in the last few weeks. Okay. We've had two NBA stars. Stars walk off the court, one guy in the second quarter and one guy in the fourth quarter, and they walked off the court because they were upset with a coach's decision.

00;56;35;17 - 00;57;08;01

Ron Zappolo

Draymond green, a superstar, got into an argument with his coach and said, that's it. I'm walking off. He came back in the fourth quarter after he had cooled down and Steve Kerr thankfully didn't put him back in. Then a week later, Anthony Edwards, the presumed face of the NBA who is a remarkably good player, got upset in a game down in Atlanta, which is where he's from, that Chris Finch, his coach, pulled out the starters because they were playing like shit and he pulled them all out.

00;57;08;03 - 00;57;33;08

Ron Zappolo

Anthony Edwards got upset and walked off the floor with like eight minutes to go. Here's my point. We are now in a in a in a generation where it don't longer matters about the team or what's going on or what's good for the people I'm with. It's all about me. It's all about me. And if I feel like I'm getting dissed, well then the hell with everybody else and there's something wrong with that.

00;57;33;14 - 00;57;54;28

Ron Zappolo

And I certainly hope that the people that play with Draymond Green and Anthony Edwards, maybe some retired players, sit down with them and say, you know what, Draymond, you may be too old for this but Anthony Edwards you're not. You seem like a delightful young kid. Grow up at your age. And don't disrespect the other 13 guys. You're sitting.

00;57;54;28 - 00;57;56;08

Tom Green

There or your head coach.

00;57;56;11 - 00;57;56;24

Ron Zappolo

Or your head.

00;57;56;28 - 00;58;01;10

Tom Green

Coach Steve Kerr and Chris Finch. Would you put him as two of the best coaches? Two of.

00;58;01;10 - 00;58;01;29

Ron Zappolo

The best.

00;58;01;29 - 00;58;02;10

Tom Green

I mean, and.

00;58;02;10 - 00;58;07;13

Ron Zappolo

That's embarrassing. Yeah. I mean, you put those. Well, let's think about the position you put the coach in.

00;58;07;13 - 00;58;07;26

Tom Green

Yeah.

00;58;07;26 - 00;58;13;06

Ron Zappolo

Like the press is going to come to them and you know hey well what happened? Who was whose fault is it and.

00;58;13;06 - 00;58;15;02

Tom Green

What is the discipline.

00;58;15;04 - 00;58;15;25

Ron Zappolo

None.

00;58;15;27 - 00;58;19;19

Woody Paige

So my grinding my gears is very short.

00;58;19;27 - 00;58;22;08

Ron Zappolo

Lane Kiffin there you go.

00;58;22;08 - 00;58;26;10

Tom Green

And and his assistants floating between two different teams.

00;58;26;11 - 00;58;27;10

Woody Paige

Lane Kiffin.

00;58;27;12 - 00;58;28;06

Ron Zappolo

Can I give you one more.

00;58;28;07 - 00;58;35;20

Woody Paige

Unit I mean has he not been a dick since he became a coach or was 12 years old? I get.

00;58;35;20 - 00;58;36;27

Tom Green

He checked all boxes.

00;58;36;27 - 00;58;38;17

Woody Paige

I Jay Cutler.

00;58;38;19 - 00;58;43;09

Ron Zappolo

You think he's rooting for Ole Miss. No I don't think he is.

00;58;43;12 - 00;59;08;08

Woody Paige

Oh that's that that's my point. I get it like no you don't have any loyalty to it to it. No team that brought you in and let you do the job and you leave. Fine for that if you want to go to LSU. But that's been his history throughout his entire career. I mean, he dumped on Tennessee. He got dumped at USC in the parking lot.

00;59;08;11 - 00;59;16;11

Woody Paige

I just think that he is a bad person. And so LSU is now arranged themselves with a guy who's who.

00;59;16;13 - 00;59;19;29

Tom Green

I mean, does Ole Miss get to play another week with their assistant coach?

00;59;19;29 - 00;59;43;29

Woody Paige

Well, I want that's what I want. I wanted to talk a moment about the chip I'm pulling for Ole Miss. Sure. I went to school at Tennessee. Ole Miss would have been my second choice. And, like, there's a tie with about 8000 colleges that I couldn't get into, so I would say. But, I, I'm really pulling for Ole Miss.

00;59;43;29 - 00;59;45;24

Woody Paige

I think that's such a great story.

00;59;45;24 - 00;59;46;29

Ron Zappolo

Now, it is that that.

00;59;46;29 - 01;00;04;15

Woody Paige

Coach is sitting here saying they have a right to do whatever they want to do with just whoever shows up. I'm going to let them coach. And the job they did and what they've done so far in two games, I want them to win the national championship and stick it up his butt.

01;00;04;18 - 01;00;23;15

Tom Green

You you can count me in the crowd of people who had no idea how to properly evaluate Indiana before that, that Rose Bowl. That was awesome. And I heard someone make a great point. They said that looked exactly like how you'd expect an Alabama Indiana football game to look, except.

01;00;23;17 - 01;00;23;28

Speaker 3

The other.

01;00;23;28 - 01;00;33;07

Ron Zappolo

Way. You know what? If we're going to go that route, the one game we haven't talked about, which was the most impressive performance, was what Miami did to Ohio State.

01;00;33;07 - 01;00;35;13

Tom Green

And they they smashed smashed them.

01;00;35;13 - 01;00;41;12

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. Blitzed them beat them physically beat them spiritually. Just dominated them.

01;00;41;14 - 01;00;48;09

Woody Paige

That there is something so wrong with that playoff system of where you don't play for six weeks.

01;00;48;12 - 01;00;50;07

Ron Zappolo

It's that yeah it's bad.

01;00;50;07 - 01;01;18;08

Woody Paige

No it makes no sense whatsoever. You can talk about there need more teams, they need fewer teams or whatever. Be over with on January 1st. Bring back New Year's Day to some meaning in this country because Sean Payton, this is the most overrated holiday in the world. Because his birthday was like same time. But my goodness, college football needs to end.

01;01;18;10 - 01;01;19;01

Ron Zappolo

On January.

01;01;19;01 - 01;01;19;15

Woody Paige

1st.

01;01;19;22 - 01;01;21;09

Ron Zappolo

We didn't win. Winning said that.

01;01;21;09 - 01;01;23;03

Tom Green

Yeah, he enjoyed the right schedule.

01;01;23;04 - 01;01;24;05

Ron Zappolo

The other play and why?

01;01;24;08 - 01;01;26;10

Tom Green

Why do we suddenly start skipping weeks in December?

01;01;26;10 - 01;01;29;14

Ron Zappolo

Can I squeeze in one more quick grinding? My girl, you still upset?

01;01;29;14 - 01;01;30;11

Speaker 3

But yeah.

01;01;30;13 - 01;01;30;29

Ron Zappolo

I got a lot.

01;01;30;29 - 01;01;33;08

Speaker 5

Of I think you could have is oh, she's just getting bigger.

01;01;33;12 - 01;02;04;07

Ron Zappolo

But I'm going to give you one more. Mark Kelly is an American hero, okay? He fought for this country. He was an astronaut, and he now serves in the US Senate. His wife was nearly killed at a rally. She was shot in the head. The Trump administration, because he did a video with Jason Crow here in Colorado and implored our servicemen who do a great job, remember, you don't have to follow illegal orders.

01;02;04;10 - 01;02;19;06

Ron Zappolo

The Trump administration, of course, doesn't want anybody to be critical of them. So they are now, according to Pete Hegseth, trying to take away Mark Kelly's retirement. I'll just leave that out there.

01;02;19;08 - 01;02;21;22

Speaker 5

Yeah. Speaks for itself. I don't even need to rant.

01;02;21;26 - 01;02;25;13

Woody Paige

Lane Kiffin, Lane Kiffin.

01;02;25;15 - 01;02;47;06

Tom Green

We will, get a chance to talk about the upcoming college football playoffs in our weekend betting edition. So that's, the other show we do and, to call it, the most popular show in American podcasting or to to refer to it as the hottest show in American podcasting. Well, both those would be untrue, but we do like saying it.

01;02;47;08 - 01;02;48;15

Tom Green

So we'll be back with that.

01;02;48;15 - 01;02;52;07

Woody Paige

I can I add that. Yes. You got Dennis Hill coming up next, next week.

01;02;52;11 - 01;03;05;16

Tom Green

Yeah. Of course, this week Dennis Hill is going to be part of the other Tom green show. Dan and I spent a year together, on the radio, and obviously I covered his career and he's been a, a friend for a long time. A lot of ground to cover with the horse. We'll get him in here on.

01;03;05;21 - 01;03;10;09

Ron Zappolo

By the way, make sure you remind the big P that when I did my all time nugget,

01;03;10;11 - 01;03;10;27

Speaker 3

Auction.

01;03;11;00 - 01;03;15;13

Ron Zappolo

Yes, he was on the starting five. Just make sure you.

01;03;15;15 - 01;03;17;10

Speaker 3

Just just give you some. Give you some.

01;03;17;10 - 01;03;18;05

Tom Green

Credit there.

01;03;18;05 - 01;03;19;00

Woody Paige

At center.

01;03;19;00 - 01;03;21;21

Ron Zappolo

Was that. No, he was at power forward.

01;03;21;21 - 01;03;22;11

Speaker 3

Yeah.

01;03;22;14 - 01;03;24;05

Woody Paige

He was never powerful.

01;03;24;08 - 01;03;26;26

Ron Zappolo

In my role in my team. He was a power forward.

01;03;27;01 - 01;03;28;06

Tom Green

We finally got a good coach.

01;03;28;06 - 01;03;28;17

Ron Zappolo

For the night.

01;03;28;17 - 01;03;30;26

Tom Green

Yeah Ron Ron Bright in his team.

01;03;30;29 - 01;03;36;29

Ron Zappolo

I'm like Bill Belichick though. It's 74 I may have I Pete Carroll may have lost my fastball.

01;03;37;02 - 01;03;42;29

Tom Green

That's going to do it for this, edition of After the Horn. Thanks as always for joining us. We hope to see you back here again next week.
