00;00;01;10 - 00;00;36;21

Tom Green

Hi, everybody. Welcome to the wrap up of March. And March ended in a very tough way for several groups of people, including all of you people who had Duke in your Final Four bracket. Sorry about that. The only people who had a worse weekend home plate umpires enjoying the dawn of ABS.

00;00;36;23 - 00;00;40;10

Ron Zappolo

Hi, everybody. On this free April.

00;00;40;12 - 00;00;41;25

Tom Green

First day. Almost there.

00;00;41;25 - 00;00;44;00

Ron Zappolo

Little inside joke there. Dang, Ron. Polo.

00;00;44;03 - 00;00;47;29

Woody Paige

Make it outside. Tell him we were redoing this. Screwed up.

00;00;47;29 - 00;00;56;02

Ron Zappolo

The opening. Thought it was April 1st and I was out of the country last week. I thought, goddamn, I've missed a day. I know I drank too much, but that's.

00;00;56;02 - 00;00;58;23

Tom Green

I'm ahead of everyone the day ahead.

00;00;58;25 - 00;01;01;02

Speaker 5

Hello?

00;01;01;05 - 00;01;01;23

Speaker 4

You.

00;01;01;25 - 00;01;02;18

Tom Green

She was the one.

00;01;02;18 - 00;01;05;03

Speaker 5

I the chocolate. Well, and I still vote. We just leave all of that.

00;01;05;06 - 00;01;06;02

Ron Zappolo

Leave it in.

00;01;06;05 - 00;01;07;07

Tom Green

Leave it all there.

00;01;07;07 - 00;01;09;04

Ron Zappolo

Oh, where should we start?

00;01;09;06 - 00;01;31;12

Tom Green

You know, I really. I really enjoyed this weekend. There was so much good sports on. We'll talk about Gary Woodland in golf. We're going to talk about the NCAA Final Four. I haven't seen baseball fans this engaged in anything than the fans in the stands. Being a big part of ABS. They love the umpire being wrong. And it goes you know, I think it goes both ways.

00;01;31;12 - 00;01;37;04

Tom Green

Certainly they want it for their team. But the umpires mad at being a home plate umpire these days for.

00;01;37;04 - 00;01;58;08

Woody Paige

People who weren't paying attention because there was the NCAA and there were a lot of other issues that we dealt with over the weekend. But this is not only something brand new for Major League Baseball, but something brand new for the umpires because they're right on display out there.

00;01;58;08 - 00;02;02;20

Tom Green

And they are being told they're wrong in front of 40,000.

00;02;02;24 - 00;02;19;21

Ron Zappolo

And the powers that be in baseball said all along, this is going to prove how great the home plate umpires are. Well, if you were CB Buckner on Saturday and they challenged you ten times and nine times, you were wrong. By the end of it. It was his body language.

00;02;19;23 - 00;02;20;28

Speaker 4

Yes.

00;02;21;00 - 00;02;23;22

Tom Green

Well, the Yankees were five for five last night, and challengers.

00;02;23;26 - 00;02;24;28

Woody Paige

Lost the game and.

00;02;24;28 - 00;02;25;14

Ron Zappolo

Lost.

00;02;25;14 - 00;02;42;03

Tom Green

And still lost 2 to 1. But the average right now is running about 50 to 60% that they're getting these calls wrong. And I've thought to be honest with I thought they use replay. Now the slow version of replay on plays at first or stolen bases and it's it's.

00;02;42;06 - 00;02;42;09

Ron Zappolo

But.

00;02;42;09 - 00;02;46;21

Tom Green

It shows you how hard it is. But the balls and strikes thing they do it like that.

00;02;46;21 - 00;03;01;28

Ron Zappolo

Okay. They do combine. That's good. That is good. Do we really want to go to a situation where if a ball is one eighth of one quarter of an inch off the plate, we're going to overturn the call.

00;03;02;00 - 00;03;04;12

Tom Green

If the guy has the guts to challenge I.

00;03;04;15 - 00;03;15;15

Ron Zappolo

Do we really? But Woody, it's the same. But now that when they steal second, they teach every guy to keep the glove the tag on him because if he comes off the bag.

00;03;15;17 - 00;03;16;16

Tom Green

Like, watch.

00;03;16;18 - 00;03;19;06

Ron Zappolo

I don't know if that's what we're supposed to be doing.

00;03;19;06 - 00;03;31;01

Woody Paige

But baseball brought it upon itself. The players brought it upon themselves. Think of an umpire and I'm forgetting his name already. But there was an umpire that was in the league for.

00;03;31;08 - 00;03;33;03

Ron Zappolo

Angel Hernandez.

00;03;33;05 - 00;03;40;17

Woody Paige

And wasn't any good angel, and they wouldn't get rid of him. So that's what brought on stuff like this, because it'd be a joke. It'd be the street outside.

00;03;40;17 - 00;03;44;19

Tom Green

Angel Hernandez should have been around for abs. That's that would have been.

00;03;44;21 - 00;03;46;21

Ron Zappolo

Because that would have been cruel. And so here's.

00;03;46;21 - 00;04;07;24

Tom Green

The trick of this, because I want to get to the NFL referees and the problems they're having trying to get a new contract, the concept of replacement refs. Again, all this stuff is important. Every pitch is important in a baseball game. Some have more weight than others. But everybody in America now bets on everything. Yeah, and the call matters.

00;04;07;24 - 00;04;27;12

Tom Green

So if you're going to use replacement officials or the eye in the sky, you have to deal with all of your partners. Now, if you're the National Football League that are handling money based on these decisions and baseball now, you know, we've seen it already with the class AA thing last year about whether or not he would throw a first pitch strike or not.

00;04;27;15 - 00;04;37;04

Tom Green

There's too much emphasis now on gambling to not get everything right, because there's a lot of money that moves on every pitch and every snap of a football.

00;04;37;11 - 00;04;58;09

Woody Paige

Look at society though. I had a long conversation with my daughter last night. She's a computer scientists, and she was talking about how AI is taking over everything. That that's basically the society we are now living in. AI. AI is writing all the stories for sports Illustrated, one of the most illustrious about sports magazine.

00;04;58;09 - 00;04;58;29

Tom Green

Once Wall Street.

00;04;58;29 - 00;05;10;02

Woody Paige

Once was and, yes, and newspapers now have AI stories. I'm replaced. You guys in your history.

00;05;10;08 - 00;05;14;00

Tom Green

Irreplaceable? Probably. Really, to be honest with you, Ron and myself, but.

00;05;14;00 - 00;05;46;18

Woody Paige

Oh, yeah, that's what's happening in sports. I mean, more and more, I like decisions being made because while we're talking about ABS in baseball and NFL, talking about hiring replacement referees, they're also talking about more and more calls that are going to be made off the field in the press box in New York City, whatever it might be, that it's a total new world brave.

00;05;46;18 - 00;06;00;26

Woody Paige

Is that a brave new world? Well, no, I don't think it's the case, but, I will just make one statement about, the NFL. What it's doing. It is forcing the referees to back down. We're going to go out, get a replacement.

00;06;00;28 - 00;06;25;16

Ron Zappolo

I'll tell you what. If I was an NFL referee, I would never back down. The NFL is $1 billion a you're business for more than that. And they're not going to pay the referees. If I was the head of the referees, I'd give them the middle finger and say, you really want to go out and get replacement referees in a business like this where every swinging, you know what in America bets on it?

00;06;25;21 - 00;06;29;21

Ron Zappolo

Go ahead. I remember the last time they had a couple of replacement referees.

00;06;29;21 - 00;06;31;23

Tom Green

All it takes is one game, one call.

00;06;31;27 - 00;06;37;23

Ron Zappolo

On Roger Goodell and the NFL. If they let that happen, a pox on their house.

00;06;37;23 - 00;06;39;12

Tom Green

So the thing is how much notice.

00;06;39;13 - 00;06;40;24

Woody Paige

Green Bay Packers was that.

00;06;40;24 - 00;06;42;13

Tom Green

Seattle night the Monday night.

00;06;42;16 - 00;06;43;00

Ron Zappolo

Rodgers.

00;06;43;00 - 00;06;43;24

Woody Paige

Of Harvard at that.

00;06;43;24 - 00;06;45;16

Tom Green

Time. Well there's the famous picture of one.

00;06;45;16 - 00;06;48;08

Ron Zappolo

Referee like the other little guy like this.

00;06;48;10 - 00;07;02;25

Tom Green

But but the thing is, there's money at stake. 6.5% versus 10%. That's nothing to the ham. But what they don't want is the NFL to have the ability to relegate referees who suck, to move them down and out of the NFL.

00;07;02;26 - 00;07;05;20

Ron Zappolo

Okay, we can debate.

00;07;05;23 - 00;07;06;20

Tom Green

And full time part.

00;07;06;21 - 00;07;18;19

Ron Zappolo

Why don't we have a a real negotiation? Yeah. But at the end of the day, if I was going to advise the NFL, you do not want to play one game that counts with replacement official.

00;07;18;19 - 00;07;21;28

Tom Green

With especially with the gambling. Exactly right now.

00;07;21;29 - 00;07;41;20

Ron Zappolo

And the other thing going back to the baseball, you talked about, every pitch does count. But I was watching a game last night, and I think baseball is going to modify this a little bit. If it's a scoreless game in the third inning and there's two outs and there's nobody on and it's a no. Two pitch and the catcher goes, boop, boop, I think it's a strike.

00;07;41;20 - 00;07;46;25

Ron Zappolo

And you called it a ball. You're wasting a challenge in a minute.

00;07;46;26 - 00;07;48;03

Woody Paige

Well, how do you change it.

00;07;48;10 - 00;08;10;24

Ron Zappolo

Here's okay, here's what I would do. And I have only watched a couple games. So I'm still like everybody else. I'm trying to get used to this. I think I would modify it and say, we not going to have any challenges at all until the seventh inning, when the game is later on, when the outs on pitches are more important, you can challenge in the seventh inning.

00;08;10;24 - 00;08;25;04

Tom Green

I'd argue only in that I see managers now becoming more in tune with the concept of not necessarily thinking you have to win the game with a closer in the ninth. You may need that sixth inning out to make the game matter. Who might it would be you might.

00;08;25;05 - 00;08;30;13

Ron Zappolo

But if they're only giving you two challenges, yeah, why would you waste one.

00;08;30;18 - 00;08;31;16

Woody Paige

Run zone to.

00;08;31;16 - 00;08;34;01

Tom Green

It? But the player has to do it. It's just the player we see.

00;08;34;06 - 00;08;44;17

Woody Paige

We see it in the NBA where they're saving it. They're saving it. Say I in baseball, I would save it and not use it.

00;08;44;20 - 00;08;45;20

Ron Zappolo

If you know you know.

00;08;45;20 - 00;09;01;23

Woody Paige

They talk about you go home with timeouts in your pocket. It's okay I don't mind going home with them, but I want to say I want the ninth inning two outs because we saw the other night, the Marlins beat the the Rockies with two outs in the ninth inning. That's when I.

00;09;01;28 - 00;09;02;19

Ron Zappolo

Want the job.

00;09;02;27 - 00;09;06;21

Woody Paige

I want that every pitch to be right. That's where I'm saving it for.

00;09;06;21 - 00;09;09;03

Tom Green

So we'll get to see it about this on Friday.

00;09;09;10 - 00;09;17;05

Woody Paige

Can I compromise just to add, one for seven innings. Two more. You last three. There you go. How about that?

00;09;17;06 - 00;09;28;03

Tom Green

We'll get to see it at Coors Field Friday when the Rockies open their season. So far they are winless in America but undefeated in Canada. Having having beat the Blue Jays.

00;09;28;05 - 00;09;31;04

Woody Paige

How do you go? Miami. America.

00;09;31;06 - 00;09;38;14

Tom Green

America. But they're they they are still looking for people to buy tickets for opening day.

00;09;38;21 - 00;09;39;01

Ron Zappolo

They're not.

00;09;39;01 - 00;09;41;21

Tom Green

Sold. No, they're still they're still sending out emails.

00;09;41;25 - 00;09;56;27

Woody Paige

I looked online the other day to see. I'm curious. It's like my friends talk to me about going because I have season tickets forever, and and whether I'm going to go or not and went on to StubHub or whatever they're 13,000 tickets left.

00;09;56;29 - 00;10;03;18

Ron Zappolo

I had no idea there that many tickets up. I guess the good baseball fans of Denver not actually expensive.

00;10;03;18 - 00;10;04;04

Woody Paige

Two in a.

00;10;04;10 - 00;10;05;26

Ron Zappolo

Row with the it's a.

00;10;05;26 - 00;10;07;11

Tom Green

Higher price ticket for opening day.

00;10;07;11 - 00;10;09;23

Woody Paige

Yeah, like $174 for one ticket.

00;10;09;23 - 00;10;40;01

Tom Green

So if they let's say they open against the Phillies at home and they draw, you know, 35, 45,000 people or whatever, they still will not draw as many as the Denver summit did on Saturday. The the Women's soccer League team made a huge splash. Sadly, the game itself was not played all that well. Ended up a in a scoreless tie, but the 60,000 people that turned out did send a big, strong message to other women's professional sports leagues.

00;10;40;01 - 00;10;55;16

Tom Green

I think when you talk about hockey and basketball leagues, that could be coming to Colorado, but also just to send a message to women in and around the state and around the country that women draw crowds, women can attract eyeballs to TV and to spectators.

00;10;55;17 - 00;11;15;11

Woody Paige

It was exciting to think that that was the most historic crowd at a sports event. At what was that stadium land? Yeah, since the Rockies played their in their first game against Montreal Expos and,

00;11;15;14 - 00;11;16;10

Tom Green

The E ui game.

00;11;16;12 - 00;11;40;28

Woody Paige

Yeah. That was played at the older Mile High stadium. But I think it does prove that women's soccer. Okay. And it was proven when they won the World Cup. It was proved a long time ago, but it's been proved now that it can go in places like Denver and that you're absolutely right. I can't understand why there hasn't been a WNBA team.

00;11;40;28 - 00;11;43;23

Woody Paige

I don't know why the Broncos haven't reached out for that.

00;11;43;23 - 00;11;55;12

Tom Green

Said, they've had building issues with hockey and basketball. And I think because you see it in LA, you see it in Washington where they easily share the building with women's professional sports teams and also with basketball.

00;11;55;12 - 00;12;17;28

Ron Zappolo

I'll just give you one thing I think, other than Denver and basketball, the nation has been slow to realize that we are a, healthy, active major league professional sports town. Yeah. And other than those two cities, these other, leagues have been slow to embrace us. We should have a WNBA team.

00;12;18;00 - 00;12;45;26

Woody Paige

I told the, the broadcaster, sports analyst from channel seven about going to owners meetings and baseball in Hawaii and Phoenix and places like that in the early 80s trying to bring baseball to here. And George Timber said, oh, we've had minor league teams for the Yankees in our organization in Denver. We like Denver. And I go, why not think about Denver as a major league team franchise in the future?

00;12;46;02 - 00;12;56;23

Woody Paige

And he said, have you ever driven, flown over from Saint Louis to Los Angeles and looked down? He said, there's nobody there. There's nothing but farms. And that was that's still an impression.

00;12;56;23 - 00;12;57;05

Tom Green

Yes.

00;12;57;07 - 00;13;00;29

Woody Paige

Some cities around the country that. Yeah. Oh no, there's no people there.

00;13;01;00 - 00;13;01;28

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. Denver's nice.

00;13;01;28 - 00;13;15;09

Tom Green

Well, well Rob Cohen brought the NWSL here with the summit. And judging by what we saw there and there's a lot more to play out, but it's going to be a good deal for him. You know the new stadium they're going to build and it's.

00;13;15;09 - 00;13;17;26

Ron Zappolo

Going to be great for them. You mentioned DUI a couple of minutes.

00;13;17;26 - 00;13;18;17

Tom Green

Yeah yeah.

00;13;18;19 - 00;13;33;04

Ron Zappolo

Just reminded me Dom Baylor God rest his soul I didn't I didn't hear this, but a writer told me this, but he whispered to him one day, Eli and his nickname, his nickname ought to be E4.

00;13;33;06 - 00;13;36;24

Ron Zappolo

And I thought that might have been one of the funnier things Don ever said.

00;13;36;24 - 00;13;51;14

Tom Green

And one other funny thing while we're talking about women's sports was Caitlin Clark making her comment about Nikola Jokic on the NBC broadcast, saying he's her favorite player and the best player in the world. And then Jokic was asked about it and he said, we have the same. And that's why she said.

00;13;51;16 - 00;14;07;08

Woody Paige

It's very difficult to make people laugh in a different language. And when I go to Mexico and you just got back from there, I actually try to make the, the, the, Latino people there laugh. And I feel like if I do that very.

00;14;07;08 - 00;14;08;04

Tom Green

Funny in Urdu.

00;14;08;05 - 00;14;12;00

Woody Paige

Yeah, yeah. And so he is the funniest guy, you know.

00;14;12;03 - 00;14;13;27

Ron Zappolo

Foreign,

00;14;13;29 - 00;14;31;10

Woody Paige

Language that speaking English, that he could say something in the game. They ask about Hardaway. Hardaway does a lot of talking and trash talking during. And it's a said the Joker. Do you pay attention to said I've trained my mind not to listen to people like.

00;14;31;12 - 00;14;34;02

Tom Green

He has a superpower of being able to ignore people.

00;14;34;03 - 00;14;41;17

Woody Paige

Yes. Isn't that I mean, isn't he I mean, beyond that, you know, he's once again third time this year player of the month.

00;14;41;23 - 00;14;46;27

Ron Zappolo

He's one of the most enjoyable superstars in any sport in this.

00;14;46;27 - 00;14;49;17

Tom Green

Comfortable in his own skin. Yup. Oh man.

00;14;49;18 - 00;14;58;05

Ron Zappolo

We do not really fully appreciate him like we should. And we will when he's gone.

00;14;58;05 - 00;15;00;22

Tom Green

Joni Mitchell you it's going to be down.

00;15;00;22 - 00;15;22;26

Woody Paige

It's it's going to be like John Elway spending his entire career in Denver Joe Sakic doing that Todd Helton yeah. And now Joker he has no interest in going anywhere else. I don't know if he's moved from Washington Park. Most people into her know he lives in Washington, walks with his daughter and his dogs through the park. Nobody bothers him.

00;15;22;28 - 00;15;28;22

Woody Paige

He's the happiest guy here during the season. And then he goes back home and he, which.

00;15;28;22 - 00;15;31;22

Ron Zappolo

Is what he loves when he retires, know he'll beat us. Good. Well.

00;15;31;24 - 00;15;34;04

Tom Green

There on a little bit of a six game run. They have a.

00;15;34;04 - 00;15;37;08

Woody Paige

Little bit a little bit. What did he say. Little bit a little bit of his six.

00;15;37;08 - 00;15;45;20

Tom Green

Well because some of the games they really should have could have made them easier than they've been. They're going to travel to Utah this week and then.

00;15;45;22 - 00;15;46;21

Ron Zappolo

It's a scrimmage. They.

00;15;46;26 - 00;15;59;02

Tom Green

Yeah. But they have these interesting matchups. We'll see how much San Antonio or Oklahoma City care down the stretch because San Antonio got close. I think they're two and a half games back now. So I doubt they can catch that.

00;15;59;02 - 00;16;11;29

Ron Zappolo

But it's going to be interesting. Tom. Not so much San Antonio and Oklahoma City but Denver Minnesota Houston. How if there's a couple two, three games left you'll see who wants to play who.

00;16;11;29 - 00;16;13;27

Tom Green

But it's too fluid to me.

00;16;13;28 - 00;16;14;21

Ron Zappolo

It's too close.

00;16;14;22 - 00;16;16;04

Tom Green

You can't really manage it because.

00;16;16;07 - 00;16;18;18

Ron Zappolo

Right now I believe Robert would play Minnesota.

00;16;18;18 - 00;16;26;29

Woody Paige

Yeah the rockets are out of it I really I don't see them. I think, there's a chance the Timberwolves could come back and and maybe catch the,

00;16;27;02 - 00;16;28;05

Ron Zappolo

Well now they have Anthony.

00;16;28;05 - 00;16;40;22

Woody Paige

Yeah. But I think there's a better chance this is what you got to be looking at. I think there's a better chance. Even though they got an easy schedule, the Lakers could be called by the nuggets. The nuggets are going to beat the jazz. They're going to beat the Grizzlies.

00;16;40;28 - 00;16;42;02

Tom Green

But the Lakers have the same.

00;16;42;06 - 00;16;43;24

Ron Zappolo

Lakers did the same thing.

00;16;43;26 - 00;16;47;00

Tom Green

They're playing layups the rest of the way. I think they.

00;16;47;00 - 00;16;47;26

Woody Paige

Talked about this week.

00;16;47;26 - 00;16;48;28

Ron Zappolo

Ago I think what do.

00;16;48;28 - 00;16;52;28

Woody Paige

You think about I mean who would you like to I said the same question to you guys a week.

00;16;52;28 - 00;16;53;22

Tom Green

Ago at the top.

00;16;53;22 - 00;16;54;20

Woody Paige

Like to see them play.

00;16;54;20 - 00;16;55;03

Tom Green

I'd rather.

00;16;55;07 - 00;16;55;16

Ron Zappolo

You play.

00;16;55;16 - 00;16;56;04

Tom Green

The Lakers.

00;16;56;06 - 00;16;58;01

Ron Zappolo

Rather than play Houston.

00;16;58;03 - 00;17;04;19

Woody Paige

I think Houston is the one that, would be the easiest. A luka's playing great. Here's the trick. Even though he is.

00;17;04;20 - 00;17;05;09

Ron Zappolo

Team, I don't.

00;17;05;09 - 00;17;05;19

Woody Paige

Want you.

00;17;05;19 - 00;17;07;25

Ron Zappolo

Notice it is Minnesota.

00;17;07;25 - 00;17;13;15

Tom Green

But here's the trick on that. I think that maybe this is it. This is the year they take Minnesota.

00;17;13;15 - 00;17;19;01

Ron Zappolo

I hope you're right. And because my nugget fandom is still there all these years, they've starred here.

00;17;19;03 - 00;17;19;12

Tom Green

Yeah.

00;17;19;13 - 00;17;24;20

Ron Zappolo

And it's it never goes away. And I will root like hell for them no matter who they.

00;17;24;20 - 00;17;37;25

Woody Paige

But see, I like the Lakers because, you you always hear the thing about you don't see these two people in this room at the same time. You never see Luka and LeBron on the court at the same time.

00;17;37;25 - 00;17;52;00

Ron Zappolo

You don't. The only problem with the Lakers, Woody and I hear this all the time, and I always argue against it. And then I sit around and think about it. I have friends that say, well, you don't want to play the Lakers because the league wants the left.

00;17;52;02 - 00;17;52;12

Tom Green

Right.

00;17;52;12 - 00;18;10;19

Ron Zappolo

To do well, and it's LeBron and Luka that is star power. And I go, well what about Jokic. And now they go well yeah star power. But Luka and LeBron no they the league want the league will give them every chance. And I always argue and said they won't. But there's a little slice of yeah no it.

00;18;10;21 - 00;18;29;23

Woody Paige

Roger Goodell told me what's. And I got to be pretty good friends with them. When I was working in New York they'd sit around and and drink after work and watch around the horn and pardon interruption. And I said to Roger, you know, everybody says, oh, you want the Jets in the day? And he goes, who am I supposed to call?

00;18;29;26 - 00;18;35;00

Woody Paige

Tell me, yeah, help me out here. Tell me who I am. I supposed to call it the head of the referees?

00;18;35;00 - 00;18;35;13

Ron Zappolo

Here's the problem.

00;18;35;15 - 00;18;35;28

Woody Paige

And say.

00;18;35;28 - 00;18;37;00

Ron Zappolo

You're right about my.

00;18;37;00 - 00;18;37;17

Woody Paige

Calling.

00;18;37;18 - 00;19;04;23

Ron Zappolo

Coaches. The NBA is a little different. It doesn't have the, popularity and the sustainability that the NFL does. And if not, doesn't. And if Darryl Garretson and Earl Strom and Jake O'Donnell will working, I would 100% agree with you that those guys are gone. And as Rick Pitino said, they ain't walking through the door. And if they do, they're going to be old and gray.

00;19;04;28 - 00;19;11;26

Ron Zappolo

This group of NBA referees now, you can't pick them out of the hat. There's a reason why. Because they all suck.

00;19;12;03 - 00;19;25;15

Tom Green

Well, there's there is I think the biggest issue in the playoffs from an NBA standpoint is how Oklahoma City is and isn't officiated, because there is a widely held theory that they are officiated very differently.

00;19;25;15 - 00;19;26;08

Ron Zappolo

What do you think?

00;19;26;09 - 00;19;28;14

Tom Green

I it very much looks like it too.

00;19;28;16 - 00;19;34;11

Ron Zappolo

But but it looks like Shea Gilgeous-Alexander. But you he's officiated different well.

00;19;34;11 - 00;19;37;27

Tom Green

And the way they get to attack people too is not call. Yeah.

00;19;37;27 - 00;19;53;00

Woody Paige

You guys missed the the last game they played where he's been playing poorly the last couple of games he had 25 actions. Yes yes. But they actually called him what's on the arm. He called him on the elbow. That's the first time all season let's just say.

00;19;53;05 - 00;20;06;13

Ron Zappolo

It's the hardest sport in our country to officiate. So there is that. But let's be fair, the state of officiating in the NBA is nowhere near as good as it used to be.

00;20;06;14 - 00;20;10;22

Tom Green

Yeah, well it's not. He did shoot 25 free throws last night.

00;20;10;25 - 00;20;14;08

Ron Zappolo

Well Bam Adebayo shot what 46 in a game.

00;20;14;10 - 00;20;17;13

Tom Green

I mean he also plays a little closer to the basket. Yes.

00;20;17;15 - 00;20;20;09

Ron Zappolo

But I mean how many free throws that he shoot 2625.

00;20;20;09 - 00;20;21;14

Tom Green

Last night.

00;20;21;17 - 00;20;23;24

Ron Zappolo

Okay. Can we. No nobody should be.

00;20;23;27 - 00;20;25;26

Woody Paige

Can't we mentioned Arizona.

00;20;25;27 - 00;20;26;10

Tom Green

Especially.

00;20;26;10 - 00;20;29;01

Woody Paige

A state or whatever in this show.

00;20;29;05 - 00;20;46;03

Tom Green

I want to I want to talk about, college basketball in a second. Thank you. First I want to tell about our friends at Redbird Farms who become a great sponsor here of after the Horn. And I always hear people say, when you go shopping, and I do a lot of the shopping in my house, when you go over to the case, it has a chicken in it.

00;20;46;06 - 00;20;56;20

Tom Green

You should insist on Redbird Farms. So yesterday I go to do this too. Well, that's the thing. I walked over there by myself and I looked at all the chicken and I insisted on it.

00;20;56;20 - 00;20;57;20

Ron Zappolo

I said hello, chicken.

00;20;57;23 - 00;21;01;04

Tom Green

And then I was asked to leave the store because I was talking to the chicken and.

00;21;01;04 - 00;21;02;07

Ron Zappolo

They said, me.

00;21;02;10 - 00;21;22;27

Tom Green

So. But I did insist on Redbird Farms, I always have. It's fabulous chicken. Of course you care about the food you feed your family. Make sure you're grabbing the best grab red bird. It is just better chicken. You'll actually notice the difference if you haven't already. You're not paying for water. Wait. When you buy Redbird Farms chicken, it is just real chicken and all out of the good.

00;21;22;27 - 00;21;37;10

Tom Green

Chefs I know use Redbird Farms as well and you should too. Big fans of companies that focus on doing one thing really well, and that's what Redbird Farms does with chicken. So insist on it. Yes, even if you're asked to leave the store.

00;21;37;13 - 00;21;40;25

Woody Paige

And if you don't get it, protest on a Sunday. Insist.

00;21;40;28 - 00;21;46;11

Tom Green

Insist under your breath. Maybe because for me, it. Well, they asked me to. All right, stop talking to the chicken.

00;21;46;13 - 00;21;49;02

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. All right, the NCAA.

00;21;49;04 - 00;21;59;11

Tom Green

We have our final four, but the the last ticket was the most amazing one to watch it get punched as UConn came back and and court somehow court. Duke.

00;21;59;16 - 00;22;04;17

Woody Paige

The best chicken ever was around before. Yes. Redbird.

00;22;04;19 - 00;22;05;04

Ron Zappolo

When the.

00;22;05;04 - 00;22;06;21

Woody Paige

San Diego chicken.

00;22;06;23 - 00;22;08;16

Ron Zappolo

Go in there, I knew you were going.

00;22;08;16 - 00;22;10;23

Woody Paige

There. That was the greatest chicken.

00;22;10;25 - 00;22;12;25

Tom Green

And I thought is delicious.

00;22;12;27 - 00;22;23;27

Woody Paige

Yes. You can't go to restaurant without I mean now they're really nice. I had never seen that before, which is Redbird chicken and all the places because they would, you say, have insisted on it.

00;22;23;28 - 00;22;28;00

Ron Zappolo

What do you think of Duke blowing. Oh what 19.98.

00;22;28;00 - 00;22;30;00

Tom Green

And yeah and they had the game William.

00;22;30;00 - 00;22;31;09

Ron Zappolo

Blow in 19. Well I think.

00;22;31;09 - 00;22;34;28

Tom Green

They trailed two nothing and 7372.

00;22;35;00 - 00;22;38;09

Ron Zappolo

Well you guys watch the game. I didn't but.

00;22;38;12 - 00;22;39;08

Tom Green

It was a terrible game.

00;22;39;08 - 00;22;39;28

Ron Zappolo

Have the ball.

00;22;40;02 - 00;22;40;16

Tom Green

Was killing.

00;22;40;16 - 00;23;02;04

Ron Zappolo

Him. If you have the ball and you're up by two with 10s to go don't you as the coach say, if we get the ball in, they're going to foul us. Just hold the ball will get to the line. And I watch the the the highlight. It looked like Duke was like a high school team whipping it all over the place.

00;23;02;04 - 00;23;11;01

Tom Green

Yeah. That well they the the the second guy with the ball said I believe his name. He's they didn't want him on the line. So he gets it to the smaller boozer.

00;23;11;02 - 00;23;13;11

Ron Zappolo

But if you don't want a guy on the line.

00;23;13;11 - 00;23;14;04

Tom Green

Don't have them on the.

00;23;14;04 - 00;23;16;06

Ron Zappolo

Floor. Don't have him on the floor.

00;23;16;08 - 00;23;36;11

Woody Paige

Well, I always go to my podiatrist for NCAA. And he said to me yesterday, he said, why are they whole what are they doing? Hall he said they there's no way to lose that game. Lose. Yeah. And I said, well then you got the guy on the other side who thinks he's tying the game with his three pointer.

00;23;36;11 - 00;23;39;22

Woody Paige

Do you know about that. Yeah. Yeah. He didn't know it was a winner.

00;23;39;24 - 00;23;41;10

Ron Zappolo

Well coach so.

00;23;41;13 - 00;23;49;23

Woody Paige

His the podiatrist said you guys are sitting here complaining about what Duke did. He said they're college kids. Give them a break.

00;23;49;23 - 00;23;52;16

Tom Green

That's true. Especially nowadays. Well their kids were never.

00;23;52;18 - 00;23;57;12

Ron Zappolo

Their college kids. But at some universities they're kind of pro kids, right? You know, so.

00;23;57;12 - 00;24;12;29

Tom Green

Here's the other thing I will take out of this, because I think most people will look at it as a Duke loss and a great shot by Braylon Mullins. But there's something about Connecticut and and the insanity that is Danny Hurley and not a fan of Danny Hurley and his no.

00;24;12;29 - 00;24;13;25

Ron Zappolo

And makes two.

00;24;13;25 - 00;24;14;29

Tom Green

He is and three is.

00;24;15;00 - 00;24;15;08

Ron Zappolo

Yeah.

00;24;15;11 - 00;24;35;06

Tom Green

But I will say this. They're down 19 at the half to an excellent college basketball team. And they just never seem to think were done. They just kept playing and playing. And they they made those little runs and little runs and all of a sudden they were in the game and they were still going to come up short until they didn't.

00;24;35;08 - 00;24;42;12

Tom Green

But there's something about that culture, that, that Hurley does exact from players and the types of players he recruited.

00;24;42;16 - 00;24;44;18

Woody Paige

But do you like the way that he. No.

00;24;44;21 - 00;24;48;09

Tom Green

Oh, no. There's I mean, it's like, would you send your kid to play for Danny hurt?

00;24;48;10 - 00;24;54;05

Ron Zappolo

No, but you're right. He's a hell of a coach. That's why the Lakers tried to hire him, but that's why he's always in the final. And I want to.

00;24;54;05 - 00;25;00;03

Woody Paige

Ask Ron straightforward. You said 8 or 9 teams could win it. Are there still 8 or 9 teams in it?

00;25;00;05 - 00;25;06;09

Ron Zappolo

No. We're down. Well, at most people, I thought that Duke couldn't win it. At least in the pool I was in, everybody had to do well.

00;25;06;09 - 00;25;09;15

Woody Paige

And I thought you were mentioning that school prominently here.

00;25;09;15 - 00;25;15;16

Tom Green

I'm surprised UConn is an underdog to Illinois. It's just slight. Both the both the games are one and a half point pick. So I don't think.

00;25;15;16 - 00;25;16;28

Woody Paige

Illinois was in your group.

00;25;16;28 - 00;25;18;15

Ron Zappolo

Of Illinois was not in my.

00;25;18;16 - 00;25;18;29

Tom Green

I don't think a.

00;25;18;29 - 00;25;23;05

Ron Zappolo

Lot of, do you think the Duke coach will get a lot of heat for this?

00;25;23;07 - 00;25;24;19

Tom Green

He already has. Has. Yes.

00;25;24;19 - 00;25;29;08

Ron Zappolo

Yeah. I mean, I know I mean, Mike Chayefsky wouldn't, but John Trier might.

00;25;29;11 - 00;25;31;04

Tom Green

Oh, he's definitely getting it.

00;25;31;05 - 00;25;34;17

Ron Zappolo

Well they should they fired Hubert Davis. Other. Yeah.

00;25;34;22 - 00;25;41;06

Woody Paige

No, no. If North Carolina goes as it goes North Carolina politically so goes Duke.

00;25;41;09 - 00;25;46;07

Ron Zappolo

Can I mean if Davis paid with his job no wonder.

00;25;46;10 - 00;26;08;16

Tom Green

One other college sports know what I want to get to. We talked about the best coaches around. David Karl at the University of Denver, the do hockey pioneers going back to the Frozen Four. And if you are in Colorado and you're making a list of the best coaches, it's not really close right now. David Karl is the king.

00;26;08;19 - 00;26;18;25

Tom Green

He's the guy on top of of all of them. He, every year for years now he's won national championships and he's teed up. He's two games away from winning another one.

00;26;18;27 - 00;26;37;04

Woody Paige

How do you think, someone wakes up every morning and goes, I'm the second best, hockey coaching. Yeah. Beaver, Colorado. Bettors one champion. You know, he got a wake up every morning going. I'm not as good as the kid down the street. That,

00;26;37;09 - 00;26;39;22

Ron Zappolo

Probably won't be long before he's competing with them.

00;26;39;28 - 00;26;42;09

Tom Green

Yeah, well, David, Carl's passed on, and he's.

00;26;42;09 - 00;26;43;25

Ron Zappolo

Passed on a couple, hasn't.

00;26;43;25 - 00;26;44;15

Tom Green

He? Yeah.

00;26;44;18 - 00;26;53;24

Woody Paige

How do you think? How do you think that's happened? That, I was saying that to you before we went on the air that I, I, you know, I've been watching do you hockey since 74. When I get Murray.

00;26;53;24 - 00;26;54;09

Tom Green

Armstrong.

00;26;54;09 - 00;27;09;27

Woody Paige

You go, how do they do this? But it's become I hate to use that word, but it's become a cult in the sense that you're a kid growing up in Canada, in a small town. You're. Where do you what.

00;27;09;28 - 00;27;10;21

Ron Zappolo

Do you hockey.

00;27;10;24 - 00;27;14;05

Woody Paige

And you want to come to Denver to play hockey.

00;27;14;08 - 00;27;17;09

Tom Green

It also means you don't have to play at North Dakota.

00;27;17;11 - 00;27;44;14

Ron Zappolo

You know, because he's like, he's just amazing. You was recruiting against all these other big eight schools. I go, how did they ever lose out on the single guy? Manhattan, Kansas in Boulder, Calder, Colorado. Give do you hockey an incredible amount of credit. They decade after decade after decade through different regime back then George Marshall Johnson George gwas Dickey yeah they all when.

00;27;44;16 - 00;27;56;26

Tom Green

And and the hiring of David Karl wasn't easy. It was a young man who had his career, his playing career cut short by it by a heart condition. And he I don't think he was 30 yet when they hired him. I think he was in his late 20s. It was a.

00;27;56;26 - 00;28;01;12

Ron Zappolo

Gamble. He's going to have more opportunities to pass up.

00;28;01;14 - 00;28;02;04

Tom Green

Yeah he.

00;28;02;04 - 00;28;02;17

Ron Zappolo

Is.

00;28;02;23 - 00;28;18;06

Woody Paige

But you talked about that. I think Mark Hislop put it well. And talking about not only is he the best coach here, but that is the best program amateur college or professional in this town.

00;28;18;10 - 00;28;20;28

Tom Green

Oh they're up there in that. But I just, I well.

00;28;20;28 - 00;28;23;15

Woody Paige

How many championships if they won five and.

00;28;23;15 - 00;28;35;16

Tom Green

They've won ten I think. Yeah I think they're the only team in NCAA hockey that's won ten. And they did that recently. So but they're back in it now. And they'll in a week and a half go to Vegas with a chance to to win another one.

00;28;35;16 - 00;28;37;26

Woody Paige

Oh good place to go to hockey.

00;28;38;00 - 00;28;42;08

Tom Green

Well you think of you know where college hockey has its roots and Jerry Tarkanian.

00;28;42;08 - 00;28;47;12

Woody Paige

And speaking of winning teams, you got to talk about the Rockies and how they started.

00;28;47;12 - 00;28;48;15

Ron Zappolo

We got something more important.

00;28;48;15 - 00;28;51;00

Tom Green

Than I want to. I want to get to, Tiger Woods.

00;28;51;00 - 00;28;51;27

Ron Zappolo

Yeah, that's what we.

00;28;51;27 - 00;29;00;03

Tom Green

Should, Because it's such a it's such a jarring story to hear when you've heard it before and before.

00;29;00;04 - 00;29;21;06

Woody Paige

And rod said, that is really the story that people are talking more about than practically anything that we brought up this weekend, even to start a baseball season or whatever else might be going on. NCAA people are talking about Tiger Woods because he's been such a part of our lives since he was 16 years old.

00;29;21;11 - 00;29;21;18

Tom Green

And.

00;29;21;22 - 00;29;27;13

Ron Zappolo

One of the most important sports figures of the last 30, 35 years.

00;29;27;13 - 00;29;38;07

Tom Green

I think this incident, though, we have to be a bit wary of what we know and what we don't know, and the problem is we we've already traveled this road with him.

00;29;38;07 - 00;29;40;23

Ron Zappolo

I was going to say we kind of sorted know.

00;29;40;25 - 00;29;41;07

Tom Green

And that's the.

00;29;41;07 - 00;29;43;27

Speaker 5

Thing. The pundits par for the course exactly.

00;29;43;27 - 00;29;44;20

Tom Green

But that's the thing.

00;29;44;20 - 00;30;02;20

Ron Zappolo

Is I'm, I'm I'm a tiger unabashed Tiger fan and I am I don't care about the golf. I'm disappointed that this morning I read that he came out and said that, well, I was on my phone and I was changing the radio.

00;30;02;21 - 00;30;04;17

Tom Green

Is that. He didn't say that this morning, though.

00;30;04;20 - 00;30;29;11

Ron Zappolo

Well, whenever he said it. Okay, that that's not now. You're right. Maybe his lawyers are telling him to say that I, as a Tiger fan, would have liked him to, as he did once before. Call a news conference. Yeah, and get up. And he doesn't have to be Uber specific, but come out and say, listen, like many other Americans, I'm dealing with some issues.

00;30;29;18 - 00;30;59;22

Ron Zappolo

I'm, I'm I'm embarrassed, I feel bad, but I look in the camera and tell you I'm working on it. We love to forgive people in our society. We will forgive anybody for anything. What we don't forgive is when people try to cover it up. Bullshit. Avoid it. Thanks. Bullshit. Us draft dodge, whatever it is. Just sometimes it's just best to come out and be.

00;30;59;24 - 00;31;08;12

Ron Zappolo

Does he have that here? I don't know, I don't know, I don't know that he does. I think he's got a little bit of that. Hey, I can't ever admit I'm.

00;31;08;14 - 00;31;08;24

Tom Green

50.

00;31;08;24 - 00;31;41;22

Woody Paige

Years old. I can I can honestly say that, I'm one of the few, golf writers. And that became really close to him. So it alarms me. It disarms me. We got to be great friends, and it's hard to believe. But it happened, and there were different reasons. He has an addict addiction problem and when you say addiction problem, you suddenly take a drugs.

00;31;41;25 - 00;32;03;05

Woody Paige

We had a promoter here in Colorado that was one of my closest friends who had addiction problems, gambling and eating. Yeah, you could have an addiction problem with chocolate. Yeah, you could have addiction. Problem with and again, I have I have a close friend and newspaper business that also is close to Tiger Woods, who said he had a steroid problem.

00;32;03;08 - 00;32;09;01

Woody Paige

And that's been whispered about over the years that that's how he. You remember when he went off the Marines and.

00;32;09;03 - 00;32;10;13

Ron Zappolo

The Canadian doctor.

00;32;10;15 - 00;32;34;16

Woody Paige

So maybe there was a maybe the steroids had led to a lot of the injuries. He's had to break down to the bar, but he had an addiction to women. You both know that were serious addiction to women. He had a serious addiction to, some sort of prescription drugs over the years. And he's had a serious addiction to driving like an idiot.

00;32;34;18 - 00;32;56;28

Woody Paige

And all he had to do was. And you look, you both addresses all he had to do. 25, 30 years ago was get somebody to drive you around. He wouldn't have had 14 wrecks like he's had. He wouldn't have almost died. He almost lost his leg because he has to drive the car because it's a power addiction. He had an addiction to golf.

00;32;56;28 - 00;33;10;03

Woody Paige

That's why I became so good. I mean, he would hit a thousand balls when you and I might hit three. So he has an addiction problem that he can't address and he can't address it. If you're talking, he won't take responsibility.

00;33;10;03 - 00;33;11;07

Ron Zappolo

Until you address it.

00;33;11;08 - 00;33;14;09

Tom Green

Well, until you acknowledge. Acknowledge. Yeah. Say that's what I'm saying.

00;33;14;12 - 00;33;22;14

Woody Paige

But it is addiction problem. I've been around him enough to see that whatever he is has in his life, there's an addiction to it.

00;33;22;14 - 00;33;47;26

Tom Green

But you talk about forgiveness in our country. There's also a patient's issue here that's very important because he now through several of these incidents is not hurt anyone other than himself. Yeah. But you know the patient's will is running out on that. But also the odds start to drop that you are going to, in fact, hurt or kill someone.

00;33;48;00 - 00;34;04;00

Tom Green

And then you never, you know, it was like of, irrevocable acts, things you can't take back. And that would fall into that category in those irrevocable acts, the things you can't apologize enough for fix. And that would be the case if Tiger was to.

00;34;04;03 - 00;34;24;28

Woody Paige

Well, let me just give you like one minute story. Remember when he won at, the last U.S. open that he won, Torrey Pines? Yeah. And he did it with a bad knee, and he was out for a year with an injury and came back. And he played in the tournament there was in Tucson. And I was down there doing, spring training and, around the horn.

00;34;25;00 - 00;34;45;03

Woody Paige

And I went over to see him play at a club I later joined, and he was playing in one of those tournaments where he's teeing off in the afternoon at 1:00 is I'm rushing over from Phoenix to get there and making this real quick. And I thought he was on the tee, but they were slowed up because of morning group.

00;34;45;05 - 00;35;00;18

Woody Paige

This was match play. Had backed him up. And so he's on the practice screen, which surprised me. And I end up on the screen and he goes, what are you what are you doing? I said, I came to see you, see if you're he's playing back for the first time in a year. Yeah. And, I said we're going to hit on the first tee.

00;35;00;18 - 00;35;14;07

Woody Paige

Said, well, he would and he said, I'll show you. He's on the practice screen. He puts a tee down and hits the ball over the clubhouse. And I said, you know, you know, you get kicked out of clubs for that. We would, you know.

00;35;14;09 - 00;35;15;13

Tom Green

He said, I know what it looks like.

00;35;15;13 - 00;35;39;05

Woody Paige

Here's the here's where I'm going with that. He said, I'm Tiger Woods, you know, that's his diction. That's diction to being Tiger Woods, that he can do anything. We have a problem with the president that's like that. But we have. And they're Tiger. Yes. Tiger woods. And I said that to somebody and he said he he's Tiger Woods.

00;35;39;10 - 00;35;47;19

Woody Paige

He thinks he's the only person in the world they can hit the ball over the clubhouse in the parking lot because nobody if anybody else.

00;35;47;19 - 00;35;59;05

Ron Zappolo

Did it, maybe the PGA can help him with that. You know, a lesser figure having this kind of behavior, the PGA might step in and suspend them. Yeah.

00;35;59;07 - 00;36;02;02

Tom Green

They suspend and they they don't usually announce.

00;36;02;06 - 00;36;03;00

Ron Zappolo

They don't announce it.

00;36;03;01 - 00;36;04;05

Tom Green

But you suddenly you go.

00;36;04;07 - 00;36;11;13

Ron Zappolo

You start. You know, maybe because Tiger to Woody's point has never been disciplined in any way.

00;36;11;13 - 00;36;21;16

Tom Green

But if the PGA tour says we're going to suspend you and he says, well, I wanted to play in Jack's tournament, I want to play in the Memorial. Okay.

00;36;21;19 - 00;36;22;19

Ron Zappolo

Well, yeah. Okay.

00;36;22;22 - 00;36;36;03

Tom Green

That's triple our TV number title, but that's they're not going to. Yeah, they're not going to cut off their nose to spite their face. His problem is his problem. Where does this go? Everyone wants to talk about the Masters. He's not playing in the Masters.

00;36;36;03 - 00;36;37;28

Ron Zappolo

I don't think Tiger's going to play anymore.

00;36;37;29 - 00;36;40;21

Tom Green

I don't. Well, I don't know if he can play anymore.

00;36;40;22 - 00;37;01;09

Ron Zappolo

That's why I don't think it would be that hard for the PGA to tell him you're suspended or. Okay, let's stop short of his suspension. We've talked about you being the Ryder Cup captain. We're going to go in a different direction. There's 20 other people that would be more. Yeah, I mean, do something to hold him to some kind of standard.

00;37;01;12 - 00;37;08;29

Ron Zappolo

Don't just do like Republicans do with Trump, which is just look the other way no matter what kind of thing he does. It's not,

00;37;09;01 - 00;37;11;22

Woody Paige

But that's exactly what people are doing. Yeah.

00;37;11;24 - 00;37;14;03

Ron Zappolo

Exactly. That's why I'm just saying.

00;37;14;03 - 00;37;15;27

Tom Green

But if he does say, do you go play and.

00;37;15;27 - 00;37;28;22

Woody Paige

You find it funny? And I've talked about, you know, friends being friends with Phil and playing golf with the two most significant golfers of a generation have had.

00;37;28;24 - 00;37;29;05

Ron Zappolo

Issues.

00;37;29;05 - 00;37;44;09

Woody Paige

Serious issues, one gambling and going off and playing with Liv and all the things that he's, you know, his his attitude about things and Tiger what he's gone through and you go, that's not Ben Hogan and Sam Snead.

00;37;44;09 - 00;37;55;12

Tom Green

No. But those guys also those Ben Hogan and Sam Snead and Byron Nelson, the guys of that era and stuff. They might make $60,000 in a year. I mean, they still needed to play and they still need it.

00;37;55;12 - 00;37;56;24

Ron Zappolo

And they didn't have the scrutiny.

00;37;56;26 - 00;38;05;09

Tom Green

But now, you know, you look at this, you know, you go in the Players Championship and they give you a $4.5 million. I mean it's like, okay, you know.

00;38;05;16 - 00;38;07;13

Ron Zappolo

Hey, can we talk about something better. Yeah.

00;38;07;19 - 00;38;35;21

Tom Green

Gary Woodland the Gary Woodland story was tremendous this weekend to watch him, win. And the background on it, of course, is that Gary Woodland was, a high level player whose last win came in 2019 when he won the U.S. open, but then had a brain tumor. And subsequent to having this tumor taken care of, ended up having to relearn everything, not just golf, but relearn a lot of how he physically operates.

00;38;35;24 - 00;39;04;06

Tom Green

But he also openly, several months ago, talked about struggling with PTSD after having this surgery. So for Gary Woodland to go win this week and during what proved to be an easy win, I did find it was a struggle to be in the on the back nine with a tournament lead and the whole world was pulling for, I mean, even the guys he was playing with, the guys he was trying to beat, were pulling for.

00;39;04;06 - 00;39;05;14

Tom Green

Yeah, it was great to see.

00;39;05;14 - 00;39;07;04

Ron Zappolo

It was neat. It was really neat to see.

00;39;07;05 - 00;39;30;07

Woody Paige

You mentioned another player in history, Ben Hogan, who got hit by bus, literally got hit by a bus and they didn't think he was going to live and certainly not play golf again, that this is the most, amazing story about a golfer's comeback. You know, people would talk about Tiger's comeback and he'd ride every once in a while.

00;39;30;09 - 00;39;38;25

Woody Paige

But what Gary accomplished over the weekend is you compatible? I mean, you don't you can't do that. And he was able to do it.

00;39;38;25 - 00;39;50;08

Tom Green

People now will discuss and will try to comprehend and understand mental health issues. And we all know what PTSD is now. Yeah. You know, and sadly we've learned it through.

00;39;50;11 - 00;39;53;22

Woody Paige

Many different ways Olympic athletes have.

00;39;53;22 - 00;40;03;16

Tom Green

Had it. And so I think people now understand how hard it is to bounce back from these types of depths. And, to see Gary Woodland do that made.

00;40;03;16 - 00;40;04;15

Ron Zappolo

Everybody feel good.

00;40;04;16 - 00;40;05;22

Tom Green

Yeah, yeah.

00;40;05;25 - 00;40;16;25

Ron Zappolo

Can I give you one more thing that made me feel good? And I saw it in passing. Do you remember the Dominican U.S. game in the World Baseball Classic, where the horrible.

00;40;16;25 - 00;40;18;28

Tom Green

Call, the last, the final straw, the.

00;40;18;29 - 00;40;25;18

Ron Zappolo

Final strike. And I saw this clip somewhere when I was out of the country. I think it was Perdomo.

00;40;25;20 - 00;40;26;28

Tom Green

Corrado Perdomo, run.

00;40;26;28 - 00;40;41;15

Ron Zappolo

Out of ammo. Who came up the other day, and the umpire who made the call was behind home plate. And instead of, like many people giving him the finger, he went out of his way to hug him.

00;40;41;15 - 00;40;42;12

Tom Green

Put his arm around it, put.

00;40;42;12 - 00;41;06;06

Ron Zappolo

His arm around him. And I thought, you know what? In this time, where we are so angry and we're so polarized and, you know, how could you do this? And you screwed us. That was a bit of sportsmanship to me. That was under the radar. That should have been more pronounced that he took the time in front of how many people to say, hey, it's okay.

00;41;06;06 - 00;41;07;07

Ron Zappolo

We all make mistakes.

00;41;07;07 - 00;41;25;28

Tom Green

Armando Galarraga, we talked about that a few weeks ago. The Detroit pitcher, who was never a great pitcher, but he threw a perfect game except for the 27th out. There was a play at first base that the umpire, Jim Joyce, got wrong. Call it, called a runner safe. And it was the next day, I believe. I think it was Tigers.

00;41;26;00 - 00;41;31;25

Tom Green

Galarraga, bring out the lineup card. So he could, you know, do the same.

00;41;31;25 - 00;41;33;27

Ron Zappolo

Thing he did. The he did he he hugged him.

00;41;34;00 - 00;41;34;12

Tom Green

Jim, Jim.

00;41;34;12 - 00;41;36;21

Ron Zappolo

Jim Joyce got very emotional.

00;41;36;22 - 00;41;45;08

Tom Green

Yeah. Because Joyce knew everyone. He knew. Yeah. Everyone knew the call was wrong. I think it's different than Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena.

00;41;45;11 - 00;41;45;23

Speaker 4

Who wouldn't.

00;41;45;23 - 00;41;50;06

Ron Zappolo

Even shake his teammate. Someone's a little bit differently. Nope.

00;41;50;08 - 00;42;01;03

Woody Paige

And I think, it's important for everybody that's, listening and watching us today to know that as I leave today, I'll hug both these guys and, yeah, forgive them for the lousy shows they've had.

00;42;01;05 - 00;42;01;21

Tom Green

Well, I owe.

00;42;01;25 - 00;42;04;08

Ron Zappolo

A lot of forgiveness. And so there, I'll tell you, I don't.

00;42;04;08 - 00;42;13;03

Tom Green

Want to brag, but in this case, I'm going to. Because right over what? His shoulder is the chalkboard today, and it tells a true story. Your head's in the way. This.

00;42;13;05 - 00;42;14;24

Ron Zappolo

I didn't even notice it.

00;42;14;27 - 00;42;20;12

Tom Green

The other time. That's me. The other Tom named Gorilla Sports employee of the month.

00;42;20;15 - 00;42;21;23

Ron Zappolo

Who came in second.

00;42;21;25 - 00;42;23;14

Speaker 5

No, the other Tom.

00;42;23;17 - 00;42;26;13

Speaker 4

You to the other? Yeah. That's me, that's me. Yeah.

00;42;26;13 - 00;42;27;29

Ron Zappolo

He's the one who works here. Yeah.

00;42;27;29 - 00;42;30;06

Tom Green

Well, you guys all finished in the top ten?

00;42;30;07 - 00;42;33;29

Ron Zappolo

Oh, good. Hey, do we want to mention the Rockies at all? Off to a one and three start and.

00;42;34;04 - 00;42;35;00

Tom Green

Well, we.

00;42;35;04 - 00;42;37;19

Ron Zappolo

Really brought it up a minute ago. We can if you want to.

00;42;37;25 - 00;42;39;28

Tom Green

They'll be facing Max Scherzer tonight.

00;42;40;01 - 00;42;41;28

Ron Zappolo

Well it good thing it's the old.

00;42;41;28 - 00;42;45;21

Woody Paige

Version based on what you're saying. They've only got 69 more victories.

00;42;45;21 - 00;42;50;29

Ron Zappolo

They got to do well. But they're playing at a 250 clip that may not quite get them there.

00;42;51;02 - 00;42;59;29

Tom Green

Might not get them there. They hit the ball yesterday. Now, of course, it was a strange story because the Blue Jays starter, who coming back after five years, have.

00;43;00;05 - 00;43;01;05

Ron Zappolo

Been off forever.

00;43;01;05 - 00;43;07;03

Tom Green

And then he got hurt right away in the game and then it became a bullpen game and their bullpen wasn't great.

00;43;07;06 - 00;43;12;00

Woody Paige

You have a relatives who have paid attention that I've had to rivalry.

00;43;12;00 - 00;43;12;08

Ron Zappolo

With.

00;43;12;08 - 00;43;18;18

Woody Paige

The the Rockies and their owner for I heard about three or 4 or 5 years and I seem to be.

00;43;18;24 - 00;43;19;03

Ron Zappolo

How's that.

00;43;19;03 - 00;43;48;29

Woody Paige

Going? Last thing. Well, they're more interesting that what that was. The point is they're they've got like six players on the roster that can play multiple positions. I think it's interesting that they're playing guys that can play shortstop and right field and left field. I kind of like that, that they had the versatility that's never existed because all they had to do any time he got got hurt, they had to bring up some guy from Triple-A that couldn't really wasn't ready to play in the majors.

00;43;49;05 - 00;44;08;25

Woody Paige

So at least I I'm impressed by that. And I think from the pitching standpoint, the road, the bullpen, the same as it's been, it's been you have massive more talk about. But the starters they got now, veteran starters in their 30s that they're hanging in there for 4 or 5 innings.

00;44;08;27 - 00;44;10;15

Tom Green

That was better. They used to have veterinarian.

00;44;10;15 - 00;44;16;07

Woody Paige

You were looking at me like no I want you all to do to me what my grandmother did to chickens.

00;44;16;11 - 00;44;41;00

Ron Zappolo

No no no no no no, I was thinking, I listen to you. And I was thinking your your statement there kind of reminded me one of my favorite movies, Major League, and one of my favorite scenes where Tom Baron jurors in this very small cocktail party at his ex-girlfriend's house, who's now engaged to somebody else. And one of the women, they're kind of a high society woman says, oh, what do you do?

00;44;41;00 - 00;44;51;09

Ron Zappolo

And he goes, oh, I play for the Indians. And she says, oh, we still have a team. And Berenger goes, yeah, uniforms and everything.

00;44;51;11 - 00;45;11;11

Woody Paige

There's two others, who was a first baseman for the Phillies. And the lady said, are you an athlete? He said, no, I'm no baseball player. And Willie Mays, he's in the movie. You're talking about Major League. They actually had to do that scene where he's running in slow motion because he was the slowest, most.

00;45;11;13 - 00;45;13;02

Tom Green

He looked in American.

00;45;13;04 - 00;45;13;23

Woody Paige

History.

00;45;14;00 - 00;45;15;16

Ron Zappolo

And those guys, they.

00;45;15;16 - 00;45;24;11

Woody Paige

Told the other guys that were lined up against him, you act like you're running fast or I. I always think about that when I see that movie, which is.

00;45;24;16 - 00;45;25;16

Ron Zappolo

So many great that.

00;45;25;16 - 00;45;49;08

Woody Paige

Movie is worth seeing because of it is Bob Uecker. And I loved Bob Uecker when he would cut my Favorite guy when he come to town with the Rockies, and we missed that, I'd sit in the, you know, the media room and and eat with him and I'd say Major league. And he said, people don't understand that. I never saw a game in that movie.

00;45;49;10 - 00;45;53;02

Woody Paige

I showed up one morning and he said, do whatever you want, do what you want, do what you want to.

00;45;53;02 - 00;45;57;23

Tom Green

My favorite part of that, the original one though, is, is the seeing. Hi. Corbett Field again.

00;45;57;29 - 00;46;14;11

Ron Zappolo

Hi, Corbett. Early years. I field training. Great. And there outside a High Corbett field, Willie Mays Hayes is doing push ups. I had Lou Brown says to Jake Taylor how the knees holding up Jake. Yeah. Pretty good. You wouldn't lie to me, would you? You better if you want to make this team.

00;46;14;13 - 00;46;37;27

Woody Paige

The year the year before the Rockies came into baseball, my final baseball story of the day. I went to every spring training. I was the sports editor then of the post, which was their biggest mistake and my biggest mistake. But I. I assigned myself to go to every. Nobody ever did that. And so I, the last one I went to was Tucson to see Cleveland.

00;46;37;28 - 00;46;59;14

Woody Paige

They were the only team in Cleveland. And I'd gone to the angels who were in Palm Springs. And I went to went to Cleveland, to that field. And I said, man, this is the worst, shittiest, awful ballpark in the whole thing. And I'll be damned if the Rockies. And it took care of my birds and they went to Tucson.

00;46;59;18 - 00;47;12;17

Woody Paige

And you know why they went there? Because they were given condos. Yeah, at a golf club there where they could play golf, and they got given all sorts of deals in Tucson and everything else, and it took them almost, what, 15, 20 years to get them to get to go.

00;47;12;22 - 00;47;14;03

Ron Zappolo

It feels great. I love.

00;47;14;04 - 00;47;14;25

Tom Green

It, I love that.

00;47;14;27 - 00;47;15;15

Woody Paige

I love.

00;47;15;15 - 00;47;16;28

Tom Green

It, I never got to know high.

00;47;16;28 - 00;47;38;04

Ron Zappolo

But, no, but I'll tell you what. One more scene in that movie, they're standing outside a High Corbett field, and, one guy shows up in a jeep. Roger Dorn shows up in a Cadillac, Willie Mays Hayes comes walking in. He's not on the list. And Steve Yeager, who's playing Lou Browns coach at this guy's dead. We'll cross them off the list.

00;47;38;04 - 00;47;40;25

Speaker 4

Then that was.

00;47;41;01 - 00;47;57;17

Tom Green

00;48;48;16 - 00;48;54;26

Woody Paige

So I'd like to say that to Tasha though. Yeah. Is there anything you'd like to correct us on that we've said today.

00;48;54;26 - 00;48;56;00

Ron Zappolo

Or only got a few minutes.

00;48;56;00 - 00;48;57;04

Woody Paige

Something that, you.

00;48;57;07 - 00;48;58;08

Speaker 5

Know, we don't have enough time.

00;48;58;09 - 00;49;01;23

Tom Green

But you can also admonish us about something we said.

00;49;01;25 - 00;49;24;02

Speaker 5

No, I agree with everything. My two bits, just because we were talking about how Denver is kind of underrated as a sports town, at least by other people, and we're also talking about hockey in a couple of years. We were a couple of years ago, we were deemed Hockey Town USA because we won the high school national championship, the college national championship, and the NHL.

00;49;24;04 - 00;49;25;14

Tom Green

Really the Stanley Cup?

00;49;25;14 - 00;49;26;10

Speaker 5

Yeah, the Stanley Cup.

00;49;26;10 - 00;49;29;27

Ron Zappolo

I think some people in Detroit that would take umbrage to us.

00;49;29;29 - 00;49;31;22

Tom Green

Which makes it even better, is that it.

00;49;31;29 - 00;49;33;08

Ron Zappolo

Makes it even better.

00;49;33;10 - 00;49;34;03

Speaker 5

So yeah, we do.

00;49;34;04 - 00;49;36;16

Tom Green

You know what Detroit can have. They can have all our umbrage.

00;49;36;16 - 00;49;40;25

Ron Zappolo

Yes. You remember covering those Red wings ad series? I know you.

00;49;40;25 - 00;49;45;14

Tom Green

Do. Well, March. Always remember your right to the blood brawl that Saint Patrick's Day.

00;49;45;16 - 00;49;51;24

Ron Zappolo

I miss that sometimes I do miss by standing outside of the Joe people. You know.

00;49;51;27 - 00;49;55;25

Tom Green

With our good buddies still up there who covered the Red wings for many years after leaving Denver.

00;49;55;25 - 00;49;57;22

Ron Zappolo

John John Keating still up there.

00;49;57;22 - 00;49;58;17

Tom Green

Still up there, covering.

00;49;58;20 - 00;50;02;19

Woody Paige

And how can you live in a city where you go south to Canada?

00;50;02;21 - 00;50;03;16

Speaker 4

You.

00;50;03;18 - 00;50;04;04

Tom Green

Drop into.

00;50;04;04 - 00;50;08;11

Ron Zappolo

Windsor, five shots in Windsor, Ontario. How do you get there? Oh, it's right there.

00;50;08;11 - 00;50;14;01

Woody Paige

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but you can't get over there, Dale. No, we build we new bridge.

00;50;14;06 - 00;50;16;25

Ron Zappolo

We like, you know, we don't build bridges anymore.

00;50;16;25 - 00;50;23;23

Tom Green

Yeah. Like that cup of coffee that Ron is sipping on. It's been a hearty edition of After the Horn that it has. Hardy and flavor. We want you.

Woody Paige

00;50;26;18 - 00;50;29;05

Tom Green

What's the best way to do that.

00;50;29;07 - 00;50;29;26

Woody Paige

I don't know.

00;50;29;26 - 00;50;37;11

Tom Green

The one more major league.

00;50;38;24 - 00;50;39;27

Tom Green

First one final.

00;50;39;27 - 00;50;53;16

Ron Zappolo

One final major league. So I'm gonna have to watch it again. I've been watching it in years. I love it when Roger Dorn goes over to Charlie Sheen and goes, would you play last year, rook, California, Penn League. How did you get in there? Stole a car.

00;50;53;19 - 00;50;56;05

Speaker 4

The Penal League.

00;50;56;07 - 00;51;01;00

Tom Green

All right. That's going to do it after the horn is done for the day. We'll be back next week. They hope you can come back to.

00;51;01;07 - 00;51;01;20

Woody Paige
